Spiders, drugs and NASA might sound like an unlikely mix, but this combination led to one of the most memorable studies in the history of experimental biology. Spiders do not learn to spin their webs, they just know how. Each thread, spiral and anchor point is laid down in a precise sequence, resulting in a structure that is both beautiful and functional. Scientists realised that any disruption to this process could provide a visible record of how chemicals impact the nervous system.
Swiss pharmacologist Peter N. Witt first explored this idea in the late 1940s. Witt exposed spiders to substances including amphetamines, mescaline, caffeine, LSD and carbon monoxide, then observed changes in their web-building. Some drugs, such as high doses of LSD, caused spiders to abandon their webs entirely. Others, like mescaline, resulted in slightly larger but still recognisable webs. The most dramatic effects came from low doses of LSD, which produced intricate, psychedelic webs that were visually striking but ineffective for catching prey. NASA's unusual drug test
Decades later, NASA scientists at the Marshall Space Flight Center revisited and expanded on Witt's work. Their goal was to find new ways to measure chemical toxicity without using mammals. Spiders, with their reliable web-building routines, offered a unique solution. The NASA team exposed spiders to cannabis, benzedrine (an amphetamine), caffeine and the sedative chloral hydrate, then photographed and digitised the resulting webs for analysis.
The findings were clear. The more toxic the substance, the more chaotic and incomplete the web. Caffeine, surprisingly, produced some of the most disorganised patterns, with spiders failing to finish the sides of their webs. Cannabis and amphetamines led to different but equally disrupted designs. NASA researchers even compared the webs' geometry to crystal lattices, using statistical tools to measure the degree of disruption. The fewer completed sides in the web's cells, the higher the toxicity. Why it matters
The study, published in Life Sciences in 1995, demonstrated that spider webs could serve as a visible indicator of neurological disruption caused by chemicals. This method offered a novel approach to toxicity testing, providing insights into how various substances affect instinctive animal behavior without using higher animals.
It is a reminder that chemicals humans take for granted, like caffeine, can have powerful effects on other species. For NASA, the experiment offered a creative way to visualise toxicity and neurological impact.

Speaking from Houston, Narayanan said that the learning outcomes — spanning astronaut training (for two astronauts), mission operations, and hardware-software-human interface — cannot be measured purely in monetary terms. 'For a country of 140 crore people, what we've spent is only marginal,,' Narayanan said. For that, he said: 'We've gained access to infrastructure and experience that would otherwise require thousands of crores.' Training, confidence, exposure, systems understanding — these are foundational,' he said. He added that maturity in public discourse is essential. 'People must recognise that not all benefits can be quantified. But they can certainly be measured in preparedness and capability,' he said. Five Takeaways Narayanan identified five key areas where Ax-4 will directly strengthen India's human spaceflight capabilities: Training exposure, confidence building, operational experience, systems-and-process understanding, and cross-disciplinary learning. 'Our astronauts trained in world-class facilities simulating space conditions, including microgravity and life-support systems. Each hour of training they've undergone would cost crores if we were to replicate the infrastructure ourselves,' he said. He added that interacting with seasoned astronauts — including those who have flown to space multiple times or performed several spacewalks — helped boost the confidence of Indian crew members and mission teams. Astronauts — Shux and his backup Group Captain Prashant Nair — learnt how to function in space as a team, handle real-time challenges, and carry out experiments. He said working on and observing the mission to ISS has given India insights into module design, layout, onboard systems, and processes that will feed into future Gaganyaan and space station designs. 'We will, of course, have our own design and technology, but all this experience will help us develop those better,' he said. Isro Engineers Narayanan, who is leading efforts to ensure astronaut safety, said he has himself gained from observing operations in Houston. 'From data handling to high-level system safety discussions, our understanding of the end-to-end process has grown. This cannot be acquired by simulation or literature review alone,' he said. He added that the experience is equally valuable for backroom mission teams and decision-makers, who will now have real-world references to draw upon while preparing for Gaganyaan. TOI had reported last week about some specifics the Isro team is learning back in Houston, where mission control for Ax-4 is. Space Station India plans to build its own space station after the Gaganyaan crewed flights. Narayanan said direct exposure to the ISS environment will inform the design, configuration, and operational planning of the proposed Indian facility. 'We had only studied the ISS on paper. Now we are seeing it in action. We may not adopt the same model, but this will help us make informed design choices,' he said.

WASHINGTON: Legally mandated US national climate assessments seem to have disappeared from the federal websites built to display them, making it harder for state and local governments and the public to learn what to expect in their backyards from a warming world. Scientists said the peer-reviewed authoritative reports save money and lives. Websites for the national assessments and the US Global Change Research Program were down Monday and Tuesday with no links, notes or referrals elsewhere. The White House, which was responsible for the assessments, said the information will be housed within NASA to comply with the law, but gave no further details. Searches for the assessments on NASA websites did not turn them up. NASA did not respond to requests for information. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, which coordinated the information in the assessments, did not respond to repeated inquiries. "It's critical for decision makers across the country to know what the science in the National Climate Assessment is. "This is evidence of serious tampering with the facts and with people's access to information, and it actually may increase the risk of people being harmed by climate-related impacts." Harvard climate scientist John Holdren, who was President Obama's science advisor and whose office directed the assessments, said after the 2014 edition he visited governors, mayors and other local officials who told him how useful the 841-page report was. It found that climate change is affecting people's security, health and livelihoods in every corner of the country in different ways, with minority and Native American communities often disproportionately at risk. The 1990 Global Change Research Act requires a national climate assessment every four years and directs the president to establish an interagency United States Global Change Research Program. In the spring, the Trump administration told the volunteer authors of the next climate assessment that their services weren't needed and ended the contract with the private firm that helps coordinate the website and report. Additionally, NOAA's main website was recently forwarded to a different NOAA website. Social media and blogs at NOAA and NASA about climate impacts for the general public were cut or eliminated. "It's part of a horrifying big picture," Holdren said. "It's just an appalling whole demolition of science infrastructure." The national assessments are more useful than international climate reports put out by the United Nations every seven or so years because they are more localized and more detailed, Hayhoe and Jacobs said. The national reports are not only peer reviewed by other scientists, but examined for accuracy by the National Academy of Sciences, federal agencies, the staff and the public. Hiding the reports would be censoring science, Jacobs said. And it's dangerous for the country, Hayhoe said, comparing it to steering a car on a curving road by only looking through the rearview mirror: "And now, more than ever, we need to be looking ahead to do everything it takes to make it around that curve safely. It's like our windshield's being painted over."
