NSW Waratahs suffer heavy loss to Auckland Blues in Super Rugby Women's Champions final
They're the cream of the crop when it comes to Australian women's rugby, but the NSW Waratahs have been given a massive reality check after suffering a 36-5 loss to the Auckland-based Blues.
Trans-Tasman bragging rights were on the line for Thursday's inaugural Super Rugby Women's Champions final and it was NZ champions the Blues who came up trumps in a six-tries-to-one onslaught.
Wet and windy conditions greeted the players for the clash in Auckland, and the scoreline read 31-0 before the Waratahs finally crossed for a try in the 74th minute.
The pace and power of the Blues were simply too much for the Waratahs to handle.
Blues fullback Braxton Sorensen-McGee scored a first-half double, including a slicing run in which she shook off two tacklers in her sprint to the line.
The scoreline read 19-0 at half-time, and it was game over in the 54th minute when Portia Woodman crossed to make it 24-0.
The only joy for the Waratahs came when winger Desiree Miller sprinted on to a clever chip kick to touch down for the visitors with six minutes remaining in the match.
The final result was a big downer for the Waratahs, who just last week claimed their sixth Super W title with a 43-21 win over the Queensland Reds.
'Well done to the Blues, because they played exceptionally,' the Waratahs captain, Emily Chancellor, told Stan.
'As you might be able to tell from the way we played, we haven't had a lot of practice in those sorts of conditions in Australia this season.
'It was a really difficult game, but it was also really fun.'

The Waratahs found it tough going in the wet conditions at Auckland's North Harbour Stadium.
The Blues captain, Maiakawanakaulani Roos, was thrilled with the win, which came on the back of her team winning the Super Rugby Aupiki crown for the second straight season.
'We are so happy to be here and take the W,' Roos said.
'We've worked hard all season and to have the opportunity to play against our Tasman sisters was really cool.
'It's a really big step towards growing the game.'

Wales kept up their unbeaten start to their World Cup qualifying campaign with a straightforward 3-0 win over Liechtenstein in Cardiff. Ahead of Monday's clash with top seeds Belgium, Wales ultimately made light work of their Goup J opponents with a professional performance at the Cardiff City Stadium. Quickfire second-half goals from Harry Wilson and Kieffer Moore sealed the win after Joe Rodon had opened the scoring before the break. Craig Bellamy had admitted ahead of the match that he'd been having sleepless nights ahead of facing a tiny principality that had not won a competitive game in five years. On the night when Belgium started their own World Cup qualifying campaign with a 1-1 draw against North Macedonia in Skopje, simply maintaining his unbeaten start to life as Wales manager with three points against the minnows would be enough for Bellamy. "Win the game," he said in the week. "That is it." 12 months to the day from a goalless draw against Gibraltar towards the end of Rob Page's reign, few Welsh fans would blame him for that attitude. Unsurprisingly, the man who had lost sleep over the world's 205th side lived every kick in the early exchanges. From the off, Wales dominated possession as you would expect. Wanting to inject pace into the game from the first whistle, the Wales manager had his head in his hands after one quick free-kick was pedantically pulled back. Wilson had an early effort sail off-target, before Neco Williams could only find the arms of goalkeeper Benjamin Buchel with a shot from outside the box. Just three of Liechtenstein's squad in Cardiff are professional, with Swiss-based goalkeeper Buchel one of them. That shone through on the fair occasions in the opening exchanges when Wales tested him, with the goalkeeper denying Moore and Brennan Johnson with smart stops. However, clear-cut chances in the early part of the first-half were few and far between. While Sorba Thomas continually had the beating of Livio Meier on the left, finding a killer ball proved more difficult. Wales' advantage on that side of the pitch was dealt a blow when Williams was stretchered off after 20 minutes after twisting his ankle after trying to pick out a team-mate in the box. Far from what it meant on the night, the connotations of what it meant ahead of Monday's clash with Belgium were clear to see as the 24-year-old shook his head while being wheeled off. Corners proved to be a source of strong chances. Ben Davies and Moore went close with headers, while Ethan Ampadu had a speculative overhead kick that required a desperate scramble from Buchel after it took a deflection. Connor Roberts did manage to get the ball in the net as the first-half wore on, only for the goal to be chalked off for offside. In the end though, the breakthrough would come six minutes before the break. Another pinpoint corner found the head of Rodon, with the centre-back making no mistake from close range. As the first-half drew to a close, Thomas continued to be Wales' biggest threat - with Wales peppering the box in search of a second before the break. However, a wild effort from Ampadu would be as close as they got. In an effort to deal with Thomas' marauding runs, Liechtenstein made a change, bringing on Kenny Kindle for Meier. It didn't work. Within three minutes of the restart, Kindle was in the referee's book for hacking down Thomas after he's gone past him with ease. Despite the problems that Thomas was causing the fresh Kindle on the left, it was the other wing that produced Wales' two best chances in the opening minutes of the second-half. First, a neat one-two with Roberts allowed Johnson to get in behind, but Moore didn't gamble on his teasing ball across the box when a goal looked certain. Minutes later, Johnson again found Moore from out wide, but the striker's header at the back-post was off-target. Perhaps fittingly, the next goal would come from the left - even if it came moments after Thomas had been replaced. After substitute Lewis Koumas retrieved possession, Jay Dasilva whipped in a cross from the left for Wilson to head past Buchel. Minutes later, Wales had their third. Another cross from the left found David Brooks at the back-post. His effort was saved, but the rebound fell to Moore who made no mistake from close range. With the away side tiring, Wales nearly had a fourth - but Buchel was equal to Brooks' effort. Postecoglou's classy gesture for Spurs fan on holiday amid brutal Levy snub
Tottenham announced the end of Ange Postecoglou's time at the club on Friday after an awful season and Daniel Levy's feelings on the Australian appear to be very clear Ange Postecoglou rounded off his Tottenham tenure with a heartwarming gesture to a fan but was met with silence by Daniel Levy. The Australian departed the club on Friday after two years. His exit comes just a fortnight after ending the club's 17-year trophy drought by winning the Europa League. Spurs have explained that the decision to sack him came due to their awful Premier League campaign. And while his time in North London is over, one fan in particular will have lasting memories of Postecoglou. According to The Athletic, Spurs supporter Jeremy Conrad met the former Celtic boss and his family while on holiday in Greece following the European success. He reportedly thanked him for all he had done for the club. Conrad then followed that up by sending a lovely letter and a bottle of wine to Postecoglou's villa. Postecoglou was determined to reply in kind. He thanked the supporter at breakfast the next day, while he also handed him a signed shirt with a message reading: 'To Jez. Ange. COYS!' One the former, he said: "Ryan has been an integral part of Tottenham Hotspur for a number of years, both as a player and a coach. I'd like to take this opportunity to thank Ryan for all his dedication and hard work over the years, and we wish him every success for the future." Meanwhile, Levy penned a lengthy message for Cullen. He wrote: 'Donna has made an immense contribution to the Club, over an extensive period. Her diverse responsibilities grew significantly and replacing her roles with a single individual will be impossible. 'While many may associate her primarily with marketing and communications, Donna's impact extends far beyond those areas. Notably, her leadership and political acumen at planning committees, was instrumental in the Club being able to build one of the finest stadiums and training centres in the world. First Tottenham star breaks silence to respond to Ange Postecoglou sacking
