KOTA KINABALU (Aug 18): The Energy Commission of Sabah (ECoS) is focusing on ensuring all rural villages in Sabah receive electricity supply by 2030.
Its Chief Executive Officer, Datuk Ir. Abdul Nasser Abdul Wahid, said the target aligns with the Sabah Energy Roadmap Master Plan based on the 2022 census.
'The state government has also agreed to establish a special committee to coordinate efforts to supply electricity to all rural villages in Sabah.
'This will take time, but we are confident the 100% target can be achieved,' he said after paying a courtesy visit to the Governor, Tun Musa Aman, today.
The visit to Istana Seri Kinabalu aimed to brief Tun Musa on the current status of electricity and onshore gas supply in Sabah, including ongoing plans and achievements through various initiatives.
Abdul Nasser also reported that Sabah's electricity supply continues to show progressive improvement with a reduction in the Customer Interruption Time Index (CITI).
'In 2023, outages averaged 500 minutes, decreasing to 400 minutes in 2024. This year, we expect less than 300 minutes.
'Our target is to reach 100 minutes by 2030 through the addition of new generators and the upgrading of transmission and distribution systems,' he explained.
He added that human capital development in the energy sector is also being prioritized through collaboration with the Papar Institute of Technical and Trade Training (ILTP) to upgrade electrical and gas training modules, thereby producing more local skilled workers.

New Zealand dollar plumbs 4-month lows as markets rush for rate cuts

A New Zealand Dollar note is seen in this picture illustration June 2, 2017. REUTERS/Thomas White/Illustration/File Photo SYDNEY: The New Zealand dollar wallowed at a four-month trough on Thursday as investors rushed to price in more monetary policy easing there, pushing short-term market rates to their lowest since early 2022. The policy outlook has shifted radically since the Reserve Bank of New Zealand flagged the need for even more stimulus after cutting rates to 3.0% on Wednesday. Markets, and most economists, now see at least two more easings to 2.5% with the risk of deeper cuts should the economy not pick up as the RBNZ hopes. Analysts at Citi expect rates to fall all the way to 2.0%, compared to 2.75% previously. "With GDP expected to contract in Q2, we now see risks of a double dip recession in NZ," said Citi economist Faraz Syed. "Thus we expect the MPC to cut by 25bps consecutively over the next four meetings." The key two-year swap rate has already dived 18 basis points to 2.90% since the decision, promising to push down fixed mortgage rates in the process. "The market's reaction was a thing of pure beauty," said Jarrod Kerr, head of economics at Kiwibank and a long-running dove on policy. "A drop in the cash rate to 2.5% should see the 2-year swap rate on a glide-path to 2.8%," he added. "This is good news for indebted businesses and homeowning households." Yields on 10-year bonds are down 11 basis points at 4.390%, compressing the spread over Treasuries to a thin 12 basis points and dragging down the local dollar. The kiwi was pinned at $0.5818, having shed 1.2% the previous session in its biggest drop since the tariff-induced chaos of early April. The loss of support at $0.5847 opens the way to bear targets at $0.5800 and $0.5723. The selling spilled over into the Australian dollar which hit a two-week low at $0.6423. Support stands at $0.6419, with resistance around $0.6450 and $0.6524. The Aussie did make the most of the kiwi's woes by climbing to a five-month high of NZ$1.1067, and the next target is up at NZ$1.1173. The Reserve Bank of Australia cut its rates to 3.60% earlier this month and markets are pricing two more reductions to 3.10% by March next year. The next move is seen as unlikely until November following the release of inflation data for the third quarter. - Reuters

Kota Kinabalu: The Energy Commission of Sabah (ECoS) is committed to ensuring that every rural village in the state has access to electricity by 2030, in line with the Sabah Energy Roadmap Master Plan and data from the 2022 census. ECoS Chief Executive Officer Datuk Ir Abdul Nasser Abdul Wahid said the State Government has agreed to establish a special committee to coordinate the rural electrification initiative. The visit was held to brief Tun Musa on the current status of electricity and onshore gas supply in Sabah, as well as to share updates on ongoing plans and achievements through various energy initiatives. Abdul Nasser noted that Sabah's electricity supply performance has shown positive progress, especially in reducing the Consumer Average Interruption Duration Index (Citi), which measures the duration of power supply disruptions. 'In 2023, the average outage duration was around 500 minutes. This decreased to 400 minutes in 2024, and we expect it to drop below 300 minutes this year. By 2030, our goal is to reach just 100 minutes through the addition of new power generators and continuous upgrades to the transmission and distribution systems,' he said. He also emphasised the importance of human capital development in the energy sector. In collaboration with the Papar Institute of Technical and Vocational Training (ILTP), ECoS is working to improve training modules in electricity and gas to produce more skilled local manpower for the industry. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
