Panathinaikos boss : Why Rangers loss wasn't true reflection

The home side were not at their best in the first half but struck early in the second through a sublime Findlay Curtis effort. The Greeks were then reduced to ten men when Giorgos Vagiannidis was ordered off for a second yellow, making their task even harder.
Djeidi Gassama scored on his competitive debut to double the advantage and Rangers now hold all the aces going into the second leg in Athens.
The visitors did miss chances to make the scoreline more bearable from their point of view. And their Portuguese manager insists they were the better side up until the red card, while admitting they must be more clinical.
Speaking in his post-match press conference, he said: "I believe that this game can be divided in two parts. One part when we were 11 against 11, and the other part when we stayed with one player less.
"So I believe that in this level that we speak, the Champions League level, I believe that the first part of the game was excellently played by by our side. We created very, very good opportunities.

"The only thing that a coach can be sad about is losing this type of opportunities.
"I believe that we came here in a very difficult stadium, but we were not afraid of the game. We entered very, very good.
"We tried to press our opponent high. We tried to create difficulties for them. We created a lot of very, very good opportunities to score even inside their small box.
"But in this level you must score from the opportunities that you create. It's very probable that you will be penalised by it. And so it so it happened today.
"I believe that it's very difficult for a team to stay with one player less for so much time in this period of time because we are speaking about the beginning of the season in a very difficult pitch.
"And with a very, very big effort from the physical part of our players until that point.
"If someone stays only on the last 20 or 30 minutes and keeps an image of that part where it's true that Rangers tried to press us and score score goals.
"It's not correct to keep this last image because I believe that my team showed great capacity, great quality and great great performance until that point we stayed with one player less.

Filip Duricic is insistent Panathinaikos will still progress through the tie. His manager was not quite as forthright in making a prediction but is still confident in his team's chances.
"We will never give up, we will never quit," he added. "We'll try to do everything in order to pass this qualifying round, out of respect of ourselves and of the performance that we made.
"And given the fact that we will have the support of our fans in in Athens, and I will I want to take this opportunity to thank every fan that was here today to to support them because we felt this support throughout the game.
"I just want to promise that we will do everything in order to pass this preliminary phase."

Brendan Rodgers blows Celtic transfer myth out the water as high priced trio get bullish defence

The Hoops boss is desperately seeking reinforcements as the clock ticks towards flag day next weekend Brendan Rodgers insists he is in charge of ALL Celtic signings – and told fans he understands the punters itching for more new arrivals, writes Michael Gannon in Italy. ‌ The Hoops boss is chasing targets to strengthen his first team and knows the clock is ticking towards the start of the new Premiership season. ‌ But Rodgers also shot down suggestions of a difference between club signings and his own top targets. ‌ The Irishman described new recruits Hayato Inamura and Shin Yamada as part of the club's long term strategy, along with youngster Callum Osmand. But Rodgers is adamant he has the full final say over any players coming in while underlining his desire to land first-team-ready stars. He said: "It's pretty straightforward. There will be players within our recruitment team that are not just for now but for the future. 'Clearly, I will look at those players and assess, and see if those players can come in and play. Then there will be other players we specifically need. It's still very much joined up. 'I suppose it's more around whether the players are for now or later. People know the model over a number of years. There are players who come in who are maybe not expected to hit the ground running, but some of them do. 'That's what I need to assess, those guys coming in. But I also need to win now, and we need to get those players in. Either way, I will be responsible for that. ‌ 'Club signings, with the greatest respect, I don't care where they come (from), I just need good players in the building who can help us win today, tomorrow and the next week. 'I've always developed players in my career, so I respect that side of it, but also the need for the present.' Rodgers can understand fans frustration with the Hoops desperately needing at least one winger and another striker ahead of the new campaign – and the Champions League qualifier on the horizon. ‌ He said: 'I respect what the supporters are – I want players in tomorrow. But I understand the market and what you need to do to bring a player in. 'It's not as easy as clicking your fingers. We all want them in at the start, absolutely, and none more so than the coach. ‌ 'But there is a middle and an end, and as long as you have them in by the end, it's such a long season, so I'm very hopeful we'll do that. 'I am, because there is a lot of hard work going on behind the scenes in terms of players. 'Of course, you look at our squad and you can see where there are needs for improvement. It's pretty clear. ‌ 'The market is difficult in terms of timings and everything else. On the same token, we are only 11 days away from the new season and we want to get players in as quickly as we can. 'If you are looking to bring in a player that will improve us, the other club is looking to maximise their assets as well.' Celtic have a pile of cash in the bank after the £17m sale of Nicholas Kuhn on top of impressive reserves. ‌ But Rodgers is not demanding a bumper war chest as he defended last summer's £26m trio of Arne Engels, Adam Idah and Auston Trusty. He said: 'There was a bit of focus around the players who came in last year and question marks around what they brought. 'For one, they didn't set the price. But, two, Celtic did as well as they've done for a decade and those guys really helped us. ‌ 'Trusty was outstanding in the Champions League. Engels, his running power, was really helpful for us, he's a young player who will get better. 'Idah scored over 20 goals and still has improvements to make. It depends on perspective. I felt we needed physicality and power for the Champions League and that really helped us. 'Those players have still more to develop. ‌ 'Whether a player costs £250,000 or £12m, I'm not really concerned. I've seen and worked with players who have cost more but others who have cost less but are much better players. 'I'm not really fixated on, 'I need £10m, £15m or whatever' – I just need quality players.' Rodgers' men will face Ajax in Como tonight but Hoops fans might need to wait to see Yamada in action, while Cameron Carter-Vickers and Alistair Johnston will get back on the pitch. The boss said: 'I'm not sure. Shin has obviously just come in. He's been with us for a few days and it's just assessing and we'll take it from there.' Brendan Rodgers insists he's fully responsible for EVERY Celtic signing as he blasts idea club buys players without him

BRENDAN RODGERS insists he's fully responsible for every single signing Celtic make. The Hoops boss described new left-back Hayato Inamura as an "investment" of the club. 4 Brendan Rodgers insists the buck stops with him when it comes to new signings Credit: Willie Vass 4 Celtic unveiled their newest player, Shin Yamada, at the weekend Credit: Getty And he's still desperate for a new goalscorer despite the arrival of hitmen Callum Osmand and Shin Yamada. But Rodgers has shot down suggestions players have been targeted without his say-so. The Celtic boss said: 'It's pretty straightforward. 'There will be players within our recruitment team that are not just for now but for the future. 'Clearly I will look at those players and assess, and see if those players can come in and play. Celtic star Daizen Maeda spotted doing press-ups in technical area after being subbed-off against Sporting Lisbon 'That's what I need to assess, those guys coming in. 'I just need good players in the building who can help us win today, tomorrow and the next week. 'I've always developed players in my career, so I respect that side of it, but also the need for the present. 'You look at the likes of Callum Osmand. He's a young, talented player, so is he ready now or does he need a loan. 'You don't know that until you assess that. He's still our signing. 'Inamura, for example, the idea was he's a talented player, but he's only been playing professional for a year. 'But he's a really gifted played who played mostly at centre half or left back, so we'll have a look at him. 'The idea was he's train and work, but would maybe need a loan. In actual fact he's come in and done really well. 'Yamada is only in the door. He has the profile and attributes we really like but for me, there is still more work for us to do.' Rodgers is still desperate for signings to strengthen his squad with Royal Antwerp winger Michel Ange Balikwisha high on his list. He added: 'For me, it's just about getting quality players and ones I can develop and who improve Celtic. 'There was a bit of focus around the players who came in last year and question marks around what they brought. 4 'For one, they didn't set the price. 'But, two, Celtic did as well as they've done for a decade and those guys really helped us. 'Auston Trusty was outstanding in the Champions League. 'I'm not really fixated on, 'I need £10m, £15m or whatever' -I just need quality players. 'That is about opportunity and seeing the right players with the right value. 'The market is complicated, especially when you are trying to get of the level we would like. 'We all know we've lost goals and would live to replace it with quality. 'The market is not as easy as it may seem but I am very confident as a club we will bring in the right players." 4 Keep up to date with ALL the latest news and transfers at the Scottish Sun football page

Arsenal transfer for Viktor Gyokeres ‘hijacked TWICE' as Sporting listened to offers – but striker blocked deal himself

Gyokeres, 27, is on the brink of officially becoming an Arsenal player after protracted negotiations have finally come to a close between the Gunners and Sporting CP. 4 Viktor Gyokeres' move to Arsenal was at risk of being hijacked twice Credit: Getty Arsenal have agreed a deal worth an initial £54.8m and £8.6m in potential add-ons. But the switch has become its own transfer saga over the past few weeks with Gyokeres refusing to turn up for training at Sporting and the Portuguese club's president, Frederico Varandas, being very public about his financial demands for a deal. There was a chance that the whole thing could have collapsed too, after Fabrizio Romano revealed Sporting were trying to sound out offers from other clubs during negotiations. He claims that Gyokeres was offered up to both Manchester United and clubs in Saudi Arabia by intermediaries close to Sporting. It's claimed that Sporting were "very open" to do business with different clubs, but that their attempts failed after it was deemed "impossible" to get a deal over the line. That's because Gyokeres had made it crystal clear that the only place he wanted to move to was Arsenal. The Swede is thought to have had his heart set on the Emirates switch and is desperate to sign on the dotted line and join the club's pre-season preparations. Gyokeres has reportedly already agreed a five-year deal with Arsenal, but there is yet to be an official announcement from either Sporting or the Gunners. 4 4 TRANSFER NEWS LIVE - KEEP UP WITH ALL THE LATEST FROM A BUSY SUMMER WINDOW CASINO SPECIAL - BEST CASINO BONUSES FROM £10 DEPOSITS When quizzed about Gyokeres' arrival this week, Mikel Arteta remained coy and professional, answering: "I cannot comment on any player who is not part of our group yet. "When we have something concrete to offer, we will do that.' Mikel Arteta could not be happier with new Arsenal signing Martin Zubimendi However, he did hint that new signings, like Gyokeres, could join up with the team for their Asia tour if they sign soon, adding: "There are a lot of parties and things that we have to bear in mind to get a player over the line and here. "I'm very hopeful that we are going to do it very soon. There's still a long time in the window and we are seeking still, in terms of numbers. 'We are short and we have to improve the depth and quality of the squad. We are constantly looking in the market. 'Ideally you want it from day one in pre-season. We have done very well so far, I'm very pleased with how the club has supported the improvements that we required in the team." Arsenal have already signed Noni Madueke, Kepa Arrizabalaga, Christian Norgaard and Martin Zubimendi this summer. While Valencia defender Cristhian Mosquera is already flying out to Singapore to join the first team despite no announcement on his impending deal just yet.
