Monaco's alarming slide dims the high expectations early in the season

Washington Post14-02-2025
PARIS — A few months ago, Monaco was riding high in the French league and impressing in the Champions League.
Now it's all going wrong for coach Adi Hütter's side.
When a 5-1 rout of Red Star Belgrade in late October made it 11 games unbeaten for the Principality side — including a prestigious win against Barcelona — the amiable Hütter was earning high praise for his team's audacious style of play.

'I want to be one of best players in world'

Rangers winger Mikey Moore has declared his ambition to become "one of the best players in the world". The 18-year-old Tottenham loanee made his Rangers debut in the Premier Sports Cup win over Alloa and is desperate for action against Club Brugge in the Champions League play-off first leg on Tuesday. "It's a massive game, as every game is when you play for Rangers," Moore said. "I'm excited for it. I seen some of the games in the earlier rounds and it's been good to qualify [for the play-off]. "So it's a massive opportunity for me and all the boys. I can't wait to go. "I've had some good experiences and I'm ready to go and show more, really. I want to make more of an impact on a European stage, so I'm ready to play. "I want to just become a better player really, so I think there's massive opportunities at this club. "I just want to play as many games as possible, score as many goals and excite as many people as I can. "I want to play in the biggest competitions and I want to be one of the best players in the world, hopefully. "I've signed a new contract at Spurs but at the minute I'm focused on playing here. I'm just buzzing to play in some massive games at this football club."

Bayer Leverkusen battle Bournemouth for Sevilla's Loïc Badé

Kicker reports that Bayer Leverkusen have agreed to personal terms with transfer target Loïc Badé. The German publication reports that the French international is very keen on moving to the Bundesliga. There's still a potential snag. Badé's La Liga outfit have also received a €30m offer for the centre-back from Bournemouth. Such news counts as something of a bombshell as Leverkusen are currently debating whether or not to allow Bournemouth to purchase their own attacker Amine Adli. Germany's red company team wants at least €30m for Adli. Everything can either fall into place neatly or completely fall apart. Badé receives the chance to play Champions League football with Leverkusen and further enhance his French national team prospects. The 25-year-old actually earned his first French senior team cap against Germany in a June Nations League fixture. Leverkusen got the start of competitive play in the 2025/26 rolling with a 0-4 away win against SG Sonnenhof Großaspach in the opening round of the DFB Pokal on Friday night. New B04 head coach Erik ten Hag has been running a 3-4-3 system that already features three qualified centre-backs. Leverkusen still need a squad far larger than 25 players to compete internationally. GGFN | Peter Weis

Newly promoted Ligue 1 side Paris FC signs striker Geubbels from St. Gallen

PARIS (AP) — Newly promoted Ligue 1 side Paris FC signed striker Willem Geubbels from Swiss team St. Gallen on a five-year contract on Sunday. Paris FC announced the signing with a video posted on X. No transfer fee was given but French sports daily L'Équipe said Geubbels cost 9 million euros ($10.5 million) with a further 2.5 million euros in eventual bonuses. The 24-year-old Geubbels came through Lyon's famed youth academy but hardly played for the club before joining Monaco. He scored one league goal there and two for Nantes before joining St. Gallen in 2023, where he scored 14 league goals last season. Paris FC has large funds at its disposal since its takeover by France's richest family, the Arnaults of luxury empire LVMH. The energy drink giant Red Bull acquired a minority stake. For the first time in 35 years two Paris-based soccer clubs are in Ligue 1. Furthermore, Paris FC has changed its home stadium since being promoted and will play at Stade Jean-Bouin, which is literally across the street from defending champion Paris Saint-Germain's Parc des Princes stadium. ___
