Penang eases rules for religious speakers following guidelines
He clarified that the state is among the most lenient in granting religious credentials, with exemptions for experienced speakers from rigorous tests.
Mohamad stated that those who follow the Penang Islamic Religious Administration Enactment 2004 face no issues, addressing recent reports of a preacher being barred from Masjid Semilang.
He made these remarks during the 2025 MAINPP Zakat Fitrah Amil Awards (MAFIT) ceremony in Seberang Jaya.
The Penang Islamic Religious Council (MAINPP) revised its credentialing policy last year to streamline approvals for qualified individuals.
'For occasional speakers, mosque or surau committees must seek special permission from the Penang Islamic Religious Affairs Department (JHEAIPP),' he added. - Bernama

UMNO deputy president Mohamad Hasan has joined party colleagues in backing Youth Chief Dr Akmal Saleh's firm stance against the Kepala Batas businessman who flew the Jalur Gemilang upside down. Earlier, UMNO Supreme Council member Puad Zarkashi had already come to Akmal's defence, lauding his patriotism for protesting at the Penang hardware store. Yesterday, Mohamad cautioned against making Akmal the sole target of enforcement, stressing that the law must apply fairly to all. He also warned that mocking national symbols could stir public anger. Defending Akmal's rally as a peaceful one despite provocation, Mohamad took the chance to remind the DAP and its youth wing, DAPSY, to act with rationality. DAPSY had urged Pakatan Harapan leaders to cut ties with Akmal after the rally, a call to which the UMNO Youth chief retorted that such a move would effectively mean severing ties with UMNO itself. 'I hope everyone remains calm. The police already summoned Akmal to give a statement,' he reportedly said after launching the Rembau UMNO Wanita, Youth and Puteri divisional meetings in Seremban on Saturday. On Akmal's rally in Kepala Batas, Mohamad maintained that the Merlimau assemblyperson had gone there with a 'peaceful mission' and was not seeking to create chaos. 'However, he was provoked, and fortunately nothing untoward happened,' he said, according to Sinar Harian. He also emphasised that political stability is crucial for attracting investors, warning that trivial issues should not escalate into national instability. 'The law on flag installation already exists. If someone puts up the flag incorrectly, the necessary action should be taken. 'We cannot only act against one party while letting others off. If UMNO Youth has to take matters into their own hands, then what's the point of having enforcement agencies?' he asked. On the other hand, Puad argued that displaying the flag incorrectly, even unintentionally, showed apathy and deserved reprimand. He dismissed criticism that Akmal's actions were 'political gangsterism,' stressing the gathering was peaceful. Akmal, who faces police action for defying orders, said he was ready to be punished in defence of national dignity. Puad added that attempts to suppress such patriotism were misguided, calling critics the 'real hoodlums.' Meanwhile, Damansara UMNO Youth Committee member Ali Amir Razali also chipped in to defend Akmal's actions, saying the latter is a 'real leader' who is not 'yielding an inch' in the face of intimidation. Timor-Leste nears permanent ASEAN membership ahead of October summit
SEREMBAN: Timor-Leste's permanent membership in ASEAN is now in the documentation phase before its formal admission at the October summit. Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan confirmed the progress during a press briefing today. 'At the upcoming ASEAN Summit in October, there will be a ceremony to welcome Timor-Leste as a permanent member of ASEAN. Right now, it is only at the documentation stage,' he said. He added that Timor-Leste has met most of ASEAN's membership requirements. 'We decided that they should first be admitted as a permanent member, after which ASEAN will assist them in completing the remaining documentation process,' he explained. Mohamad spoke after officiating UMNO Rembau's women, youth, and puteri division meetings. ASEAN reaffirmed its commitment to Timor-Leste's inclusion as the 11th member at the 47th ASEAN Summit in October. The decision aligns with the outcome of the 46th ASEAN Summit. A Joint Communique from the 58th ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting on July 9 highlighted support for Timor-Leste's early accession to key economic agreements. 'We look forward to Timor-Leste fulfilling its roles and obligations as an incoming member state and its commitment to upholding ASEAN's fundamental principles,' the statement read. Timor-Leste, Southeast Asia's youngest nation, applied for ASEAN membership in 2011. The country gained independence on May 20, 2002, after years of struggle. Despite delays, Dili has shown strong commitment to meeting ASEAN's membership criteria. In February, Malaysia contributed US$200,000 to the ASEAN Secretariat's Timor-Leste Unit in Jakarta. Tok Mat calls for calm over flag issue
Mohd Amin Jalil SEREMBAN: Umno deputy president Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan has called for calm over the issue of an upside-down national flag. "Every action leads to a reaction. We don't want things to get out of hand," said Mohamad, who is also the foreign minister. Speaking on the sidelines of the Rembau Umno divisional meeting, Mohamad said it was important that all parties avoid causing tension that could threaten national harmony. Mohamad, who is commonly known as Tok Mat, was commenting on the ongoing war of words between Umno Youth chief Datuk Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh and several DAP leaders over the matter. On Thursday, Dr Akmal led more than 300 supporters from Umno, Bersatu, and Pas in a 1.4km march to protest a hardware store that had displayed the Jalur Gemilang upside down. This prompted criticism from DAP leaders who accused Dr Akmal of bullying and intimidation. The party's secretary-general, Anthony Loke, also called on DAP members to lodge police reports against Dr Akmal. There were also calls from DAP Socialist Youth leaders for the party to sever ties with Dr Akmal. Police are investigating Dr Akmal for sedition, criminal intimidation, and misuse of network facilities to transmit offensive content. Mohamad said any action taken in relation to the issue must be fair, and this included action against those who hoisted the flag wrongly. The store owner, Pang Chin Tian, who is being investigated by the police, has apologised for the incident last Saturday, saying it was unintentional.
