Sarah Harte: We are all morally complicit if we do not speak out for Gaza
You might say, what does a campy song contest that France once called a 'monument to drivel' have to do with Gaza? Yet, as Israel announced on Sunday the start of 'extensive ground operations in Gaza', the day after the Israeli entrant came second in the Eurovision, there is a connection. The Eurovision took place against the backdrop of Israel continuing its total siege of Gaza, blocking humanitarian aid from entering the region since March 2, and bombing the Palestinian enclave since March 18. Meanwhile, mass starvation looms so that at the same time as sequin-clad performers took to the stage in Switzerland for the Eurovision, tons of food sat in trucks and warehouses, and Gazan mothers were reportedly forced to boil grass to feed their families. This should resonate in this country, as Irish people are said to have died with green mouths from eating grass during the Great Famine. This is exclusive subscriber content. Already a subscriber?
