BMXs, boomboxes and black eyes: growing up on Peckham housing estates in the 80s

Taken when Russell Newell was aged between 12 and 20, many of these photographs have been unseen for the past 40 years. Now he is working with Autograph to share his work publicly for the first time, in Autograph's new online gallery. All photographs: © Russell Newell
'Newell's work from this era isn't just an observation of his surroundings, it's a radical act of understanding his identity and the character of his community,' says Mark Sealy, executive director of Autograph ABP
Newell says: 'My grandmother and mother moved to the Redbridge Gardens estate, Peckham, in the early 60s when it was first built, and I was born in Peckham in 1965, where we lived until 1968. I returned permanently to London with my mother in 1976. Our first Peckham home was on the prewar Sumner estate. The estate was in a state of disrepair and the flats lacked central heating, which meant they were in low demand'
'I have been a book-lover since childhood, so when I got my camera I went to the library and found books about photography. In my early to mid-teens I spent a lot of time studying the lives and work of great photographers such as W Eugene Smith, Robert Frank and Ernest Cole. My personal practice is almost entirely self-taught'
'My mother enrolled me in a photography project that ran a magazine called Schooling & Culture, which helped me create and publish my first photo essay – about rastas in Peckham. That was when I learned how photography and writing could give me a voice'
'I like to carefully compose a frame with the expectation that something unexpected will occur. Whether that's the presence of a person, a change in the light, the weather, or some other event'
'The North Peckham estate provided lots of interesting visual opportunities: fleeting glimpses of movement through these brick and concrete frames at the intersections of stairwells and walkways'
'I was always fascinated by windows lit up at night – the arrangement of the estate meant that many dwellings faced each other, overlooked by walkways. I took comfort in the glow, and the knowledge of the lives being lived within'
'I was always interested in chiaroscuro and the interplay of light and dark, the play of shadows. In terms of framing I like asymmetry and negative space. The balance of opposites'
'After living in New Romney, Kent, for a few years, my family returned to live in Peckham when I was 11. It was the first time in my life I had friends from a variety of backgrounds. The area was an exciting place to explore'
On 11 April 1981, I inadvertently cycled into the middle of the Brixton riots with my brother on our way home one Saturday afternoon. That was the first time in my life that I witnessed police brutality and violent struggle. I also got caught up in the Peckham riots that same summer and was arrested and beaten quite badly by cops'
'I tended to move through Peckham's different constituencies with my camera. I was sociable and always keen to make new connections. Being the local photographer was my identity really – it's how everybody knew me'
'Each constituency is attempting to anchor to a fixed point and construct authentic meaning while simultaneously having to negotiate with another 'authentic' version of itself. There are so many opposing or contradictory forces and structures at work it feels impossible to say what the future actually holds for Peckham'

We've wanted a child for so long - Joyce-Butchers

Jasmine Joyce-Butchers says she and wife Alisha have "wanted a baby for so long" that the timing of their pregnancy is Wales duo announced they were "keeping a little secret" in May after Alisha was absent from the Six 28-year-old flanker will naturally miss the Rugby World Cup which kicks off in England in just over three weeks."Everyone was asking Alisha 'why now, why now?'," said Jasmine, who is set to win her 50th cap against Australia on Friday."But there is always something in rugby, there is always something that comes up and you're like 'we'll wait for that, we'll wait for that'." The couple who were married in December 2023 decided not to wait, and after a difficult first trimester, now look forward to welcoming their son in November."Obviously she's been the brave one, it's very selfless of her to be the one to carry and miss out on the World Cup and part of her career," Jasmine said."But we've wanted a child for so long and if one of us didn't play rugby, I think we would have had a child a long time ago."We're over the moon that we've been so lucky, we get to grow a child and bring him into the world."Further ahead, Jasmine says it would be a dream to welcome their son onto the pitch, much like team mate Donna Rose did with her daughter during the Six Nations. "It would be pretty cool if me and Alishia could still be playing, hopefully Alisha gets back fit and comes back pretty quickly," she said."We'll have Joyce-Butchers on the back of our jerseys, that would be pretty special." Alisha is the first professional player to experience the Welsh Rugby Union's new performance maternity programme."I think they've pretty much followed England's maternity policy," said Jasmine."Abbie Ward [England lock and Bristol Bears team mate] trialled that out and I know she speaks very highly of it."It's been phenomenal so far, Alisha can't fault it. Jamie, our S&C [strength and conditioning coach], has been the lead in her programme and she wants to do more and more every day, but Jamie's like 'you're carrying a child, chill out.'"She's been loving training in and around the environment with the girls as well." Three-time Olympian Jasmine is currently in Sydney where Wales will play their final warm-up Test before their World Cup opener against Scotland on 23 meanwhile is back home in Wales decorating the nursery."She won't show me, it's a surprise," Jasmine said, "that's normally my forte, I hope she does it well!"But Jasmine is intent on adding her own personal touches having taken up a new hobby on tour."I've being crocheting little things. I've done a dinosaur, it doesn't look like a dinosaur, and I've done a little bee, which looks like a bee," she joked."I'm not normally a crocheter, but we had so much time on the plane, so much time here and I like to keep busy."I had knitted before but I left my knitting on the plane, so I had to borrow Kayleigh Powell's crochet kit. It's very therapeutic."

My parents built me a two-storey bedroom so I didn't have to move out – I pay £100 a month & it's basically an apartment

WITH the cost of living crisis making it tougher than ever for young people to fly the nest, finding an affordable, comfortable place to live feels like winning the lottery. Sky-high rents and deposit demands mean many are staying put in the family home for longer. But one savvy TikToker has revealed how she's managed to get her own luxurious two-storey place which is essentially her own apartment - and all for a mere £100 a month. When TikTok user @ yamajammehh shared a video of her immaculate, all-white loft space, complete with a stunning skylight, it quickly went viral with 1.4million views. But it wasn't just the plush aesthetics that caught people's attention; it was her candid revelation about her incredibly affordable living situation. The video starts with her jokingly referring to her gorgeous space as an apartment, before quickly correcting herself and explaining that it was actually her bedroom in her family house. She then went on to say how she pays her mum £100 in rent each month, going on to say how she feels this is a 'normal thing to do' at her age. Yama then went on to ask her 33.1k TikTok followers if they still live at home, and if they pay their parents rent, as well as asking parents if they would charge their kids rent. The rest of the video shows her meticulously cleaning her large skylight, a task that's clearly not for the faint of heart given her high ceilings. The TikToker then went on to explain a simple cleaning hack to clean her window. She uses a simple combination of Fairy liquid and disinfectant spray, along with an old "scrub mummy" to tackle the grime. She also addresses a common question from her followers: has it ever rained through the open skylight? Shoppers run to Primark for £6 home staple that's giving Barbie Dream House Her honest answer? "Yes! Literally multiple times especially when I wake up in the middle of the night and I can hear the rain literally falling onto the carpet below. "You would think I would have learnt by now." Her video shows off modern living as her parents' decision to build her a spacious, self-contained loft bedroom means she doesn't have to move out, offering a fantastic solution that benefits everyone. And it certainly sparked a conversation in her comments section as 1,407 people rushed to write down their thoughts on her video. One wrote: 'Girl you've got a mini apartment inside your family home that's so cute!! 'I pay £200 a month and I do the WiFi bill and my own food shop. I've been doing it since I was about 18 ish.' A second added: 'Look so nice, well done on you for helping your mum give a little bit back and show independence.' While a third said: 'My parents charged me, but when I was buying my house they gave it all back. They saved it for me all along.' And a fourth commented: 'I would never charge my child to live in my house. "He didn't ask to be born so I'd never take his money if he was old enough to pay.' 10 DIY hacks for under £1 each These simple and affordable DIY hacks can help you get creative while saving money Homemade Air Freshener: Mix baking soda with a few drops of your favorite essential oil. Huge Brit pop star, 40, who won The X Factor to release first album in 11 years

FOLLOWING her win on The X Factor and the release of her chart-topping single Bleeding Love, Leona Lewis put out five albums between 2007 to 2015. But after an extended break from the studio, I'm chuffed to reveal that the British star is working on new music again and will release her first album in 11 years in 2026 — exactly two decades after triumphing on the ITV show. This time she is doing it ALL herself — divulging that she is writing and producing as well as playing the instruments. No wonder it's taken so long. Speaking at an intimate Q&A at 180 House in London, Leona said: 'I've been in the studio since last year now. 'I'm pretty deep in the process and I'm producing everything, writing everything, so it's very new territory for me. 'But there definitely will be something next year. 'It means that it's very unfiltered. It's very raw. "With the birth of my daughter, I did not know the depth of love until she was born. "And I'm writing a lot about that. 'When I first started out, I was quite overwhelmed. "And there were definitely times in the studio where I was questioning, 'Am I crazy? Why am I doing this?' I was an X Factor winner - now I've got a normal job running a coffee shop with an 'important mission' 'I taught myself to play the bass. I'm playing bass on stuff. "I taught myself to play the drums. I'm playing drums on stuff. "And it's so fulfilling as well. 'Just to hear a song that is literally all you, it feels really good. It feels so genuine and real.' The news comes ahead of her debut Las Vegas residency at the exclusive venue Voltaire, which will run from November to early January. She said of the Christmas-themed spectacle, called A Starry Night: 'I think we've created a really special show for people, so yeah, I'm excited to get up there on stage.' And it comes hot on the heels of the OBE she received for services to music earlier this month. On collecting the gong, she said: 'I don't really get nervous, so my dad was like, 'What's wrong with you?' "And I went completely silent. But it was just such a big deal 'My dad, every time he sees me now, has started to curtsy, which is really weird.' I'd absolutely be demanding the royal treatment after that. Bizbit THE brilliant Katherine Ryan is mixing sex and comedy for brand new podcast Write Me Dirty. Each week, the comic will be joined by two guests who have to write the most steamy – and side-splitting – erotic fiction based on Kath's ridiculous prompts, such as, 'Apocalypse, must include a zombie and a can of beans'. The first episode, featuring Radio 1 DJs Jamie Laing and Sophie Habboo, is out today. Kath joked: 'When they asked me if I wanted to host a show about sex, erotica and fiction I didn't have to think twice – I said absolutely not. "But when I realised I'd have a front row seat as comedians squirmed through the awkwardness of reading aloud the erotic fiction they'd written about each other for a prize, I reconsidered.' LIAM AND PAM ARE REAL DEAL PAMELA ANDERSON and Liam Neeson really have struck up a romance, according to US sources. Showbiz magazine People has claimed that The Naked Gun co-stars, are in the early stages of a relationship and are both 'smitten'. 5 They have raised some eyebrows while promoting the film, with Pammy giving him a kiss at the London premiere last week. Speaking about the Baywatch star, Liam said: 'With Pamela, first off, I'm madly in love with her. 'She's terrific to work with. I can't compliment her enough. No huge ego. "She just comes in to do the work. "She's funny and so easy to work with.' Meanwhile, Pammie says they bonded over a passion for 'literature and a good laugh,' adding: 'We definitely have a connection that is very sincere, very loving. "He's a good guy.' Bizbit IF you're visiting Edinburgh over the next month, my pal Lily Edwards is taking on her wackiest role yet. The Fringe veteran is at the heart of a one-woman show, Of Fire And Flame, written by Emma Zetterberg. The show, described as a 'fantasy-romance parody,' doubles as a poignant reflection on the realities of living with endometriosis. You can catch it from August 1-24 (not 12) at 12.20pm at the Gilded Balloon Patter House. KIDS KEEP UP WITH JONESES THEY may have multi-millionaire parents, but that doesn't mean the kids of Catherine Zeta Jones and Michael Douglas haven't had the odd trip to Butlin's in their time. The couple raised their kids Dylan and Carys between New York and Bermuda, but the actress has said that she insisted they spend a fortnight in her native Wales every year, so they'd get a taste of normal life. She told the Radio Times: 'I'm adamant that they go back to Wales every year, to be with their grandparents for two weeks. 'Nana and Grampy's rules! 'They've been to Butlin's, Legoland, seen the sights in London, up to Scotland, over to Ireland. "They've even been to the Isle of Man, I think. 'As a parent, you guide them, you give them the best, broadest options, you don't smother them – you put them into situations where you hope they see the reality of the world.' FEARNE'S OFF TO FLYER WITH ELLIOT THERE might be a couple of late bombshells jetting into the Love Island villa in Mallorca – but I'm not sure their heads will be turned. A Bizarre reader spotted Fearne Cotton and her new man, TV director Elliot Hegarty, snogging at Palma Airport. 5 The pair, who I revealed had started dating in February, jetted in from Heathrow for a romantic getaway this week. Our reader explained: 'Fearne and Elliot were like teenagers in love. They were kissing and cuddling while waiting for their bags. 'It was lovely to see her so happy. Elliot totally doted on her. "She's found a lovely man.' Bizbit IF you're a fan of top stars including Sir Tom Jones, Basement Jaxx and Sugababes, you still have a chance to see them this weekend. They all headline at Camp Bestival at Lulworth Castle in Dorset. The Zutons, DJ Annie Mac, The Lightning Seeds, Goldie and Remember Monday are also on the line-up. All the weekend tickets for the family festival, which is hosting a massive pyjama party on Saturday, are sold out. But day tickets for the event are still available at DON'T SLIDE AWAY, DJ JO TELLS OASIS JO WHILEY knows Oasis better than most, having interviewed Noel and Liam Gallagher on countless occasions over the years. And she is hopeful that we will get some new music from the brothers. 5 She reckons it would be 'insane' for the duo not to get back inside the recording studio given the massive success of their comeback tour. Speaking on her Dig It podcast, the Radio 2 DJ, said: 'You've had bands like Blur coming back and doing The Ballad Of Darren two years ago now, which has just got some of their best-ever songs on. 'There are so many artists . . . Suede have got a new album out and how fantastic is the new Pulp album? 'So with hope in my heart, I would really love Oasis to have another album, a new album, because of all the songs that they wrote way back in the day. She explained: 'They've continued to write new songs. 'Noel's High Flying Birds – there was some really brilliant music that he did. Jo added: 'So how could you stop being that songwriter and not want to release new music as Oasis with your brother? 'That would seem insane to me. So hopefully it will happen.' I'll keep my fingers crossed, too.
