Johor fully supports implementation of wildlife Viaduct Project
State Environment and Health Committee chairman Ling Tian Soon said this project is not only for the safety of animals but also for road users who are at risk of accidents due to these collisions.
According to him, the project site that has been identified is the Central Forest Spine (CFS2) Ecological Corridor, involving Labis Timur Forest Reserve, Mersing Forest Reserve and Lenggor Forest Reserve. The location of the crossing is proposed to be built at KM102, (federal road) FT50 Batu Pahat-Jemaluang route, involving an allocation of RM66.2 million.
'The construction of this 'viaduct' or wildlife crossing is a continuation of the government's ongoing efforts to address human-wildlife conflicts due to habitat fragmentation along the Central Forest Spine Ecological Corridor network.
'The viaduct's design is not just a physical infrastructure, but it reflects the integrated approach of the state and federal government in ensuring ecological continuity, the safety of animals and road users, as well as the long-term conservation of biodiversity in the state of Johor,' Ling said in his closing remarks during the Johor Legislative Assembly sitting at the Sultan Ismail Building here today.
He also expressed his appreciation to the Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Ministry (NRES) for the allocation of the Ecological Fiscal Transfer (EFT) to Johor, part of which will be used for several key initiatives, including the implementation of the elephant translocation operation that will begin in July and continue until December.
In addition, he said, the allocation will also be used for the establishment of the Wildlife Protection Group (KPHL), with an allocation of RM226,000, in the Kluang district.
Third, the installation of satellite collars on elephants to enable the early warning system to function effectively. So far, two units of satellite collars have been successfully installed, and the installation operation will continue until all existing stocks are used up.
Additionally, the Johor Wildlife Department is currently in the process of acquiring five additional units, bringing the total number of satellite collars owned to 10 units.
'A total of 21 areas have been identified for the construction of elephant 'food banks', and engagement sessions with farmers have been held to ensure the effectiveness of this initiative.
'It is hoped that with this approach, conflicts between humans and elephants can be reduced, while at the same time preserving the survival of the increasingly endangered elephant species,' he added.

Kedah water tariff hike explained by MB as non-burdensome
ALOR SETAR: Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor stated that the water tariff increase effective from August 1 will not burden Kedah residents. He emphasised that the new rate of 81 sen for the first 20 cubic metres of domestic use is significantly lower than tariffs in other states. According to Muhammad Sanusi, this adjustment is crucial for Syarikat Air Darul Aman Sdn Bhd (SADA) to manage the state government's water-related debts. 'This tariff increase is not just happening in Kedah,' he confirmed during the Kedah State Legislative Assembly session. He noted that all ten water supply operators in the country requested and received approval for similar adjustments. Muhammad Sanusi, who also chairs SADA, explained that profitability is essential for the company to settle its water supply debts. SADA's financial records show profits after tax ranging from RM31,000 to RM23.1 million between 2010 and 2018. The company faced a loss of RM36 million in 2019 but returned to profitability with RM149,000 in 2020. Profits grew to RM29.5 million in 2021, followed by RM29.4 million in 2022 and RM25.2 million in 2023. SADA recorded RM41.5 million in profit for 2024 and projects an RM80 million profit for the current year. Executive authority over clean water supply resides with the federal government through the National Water Services Commission (SPAN). This is stipulated under Section 3 of the Water Services Industry Act 2006. 'SPAN issues licenses and controls all business plan operators,' Muhammad Sanusi elaborated. Malaysia waits for Trump's official word on semiconductor tariffs
ISKANDAR PUTERI: Malaysia is waiting for official confirmation from United States (US) President Donald Trump after reports suggested he may impose import tariffs of up to 300 per cent on semiconductors entering the US. Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz. said no formal notification has been received. "So far, there has been no decision from the US. We will wait. Once there is an official statement from President Trump himself, we will respond accordingly," he said. On Aug 15, Trump announced that semiconductor import duties could be introduced within two weeks, possibly ranging from 200 to 300 per cent. The US imports most of its semiconductors from Taiwan, Malaysia, Israel, South Korea and Ireland. Last year, Malaysia exported RM119.86 billion worth of electrical and electronic products to the US, about 20 per cent of total exports in the sector. Semiconductor exports to the US alone were RM60.6 billion, also 20 per cent of Malaysia's total. The industry employs more than 72,000 skilled workers and is supported by over 7,200 local suppliers, mostly small and medium enterprises. An estimated 65 per cent of Malaysia's semiconductor exports to the US come from American firms operating locally. Earlier, Tengku Zafrul launched the MBW Innexus Industrial City Project and witnessed a memorandum of understanding signing at the Invest Malaysia Facilitation Centre-Johor in Forest City. Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi attended. Tengku Zafrul said the state with Malaysia's highest investment performance for the second quarter of 2025 will be announced this Friday. "The state with the strongest investment performance in the second quarter, and which is set to lead the country in attracting investments, will be named then. Johor is among the states with a complete investment and business ecosystem to support investor growth. Its prospects remain strong," he said. In June, Johor recorded the country's highest approved investments in the first quarter of 2025 at RM30.1 billion.
