Thailand declares martial law in 8 districts amid deadly clashes with Cambodia over Hindu temples territory
Thailand on Friday declared 'martial law' in eight of its districts bordering Cambodia, after the two nations engaged in deadly clashes over a long-time territorial dispute. According to news agency AFP, Apichart Sapprasert, commander of the military's Border Defense Command in the provinces of Chanthaburi and Trat, said in a statement "martial law is now in effect" in seven districts of Chanthaburi and one district of Trat. According to Thai media, the affected districts are: Chanthaburi province: Mueang Chanthaburi, Tha Mai, Makham, Laem Sing, Kaeng Hang Maew, Na Yai Am and Khao Khitchakut Trat province: Khao Saming An Al Jazeera report said that these national parks will remain closed: Phu Chong-Na Yoi National Park (Ubon Ratchathani province), Yod Dom Wildlife Sanctuary (Ubon Ratchathani province), Khao Phra Wihan National Park (Sisaket province), Phanom Dong Rak Wildlife Sanctuary (Sisaket province), Huai Sala Wildlife Sanctuary (Sisaket province), and Huai Thap Than–Huai Samran Wildlife Sanctuary (Surin province). The two nations are locked in a bitter dispute over the Emerald Triangle, a border region where both of them meet Laos. The area is home to several ancient temples, including the Prasat Ta Muen Thom temple, near which clashes broke out early Thursday. Prasat Preah Vihear and Prasat Ta Muen Thom, both Khmer-era Hindu temples about 95 miles apart, are two of the key sites where tensions flared on Thursday. Prasat Ta Muen Thom is reportedly on the Thai side of the border, and Prasat Preah Vihear is on the Cambodian side of the border. Both countries claim ownership of these disputed sites. At least 130,000 people fled the fighting as Thailand's acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai warned on Friday that cross-border clashes with Cambodia 'could develop into war". A long-running border dispute erupted into intense fighting with jets, artillery, tanks, and ground troops on Thursday, and the UN Security Council is set to hold an emergency meeting later today. According to an AFP report, a steady thump of artillery strikes could be heard from the Cambodian side of the border on Friday, where the province of Oddar Meanchey reported one civilian – a 70-year-old man – had been killed and five more wounded. More than 138,000 people have been evacuated from Thailand's border regions, its health ministry said, reporting 15 fatalities – 14 civilians and a soldier – with a further 46 wounded, including 15 troops, the report added. "We have tried to compromise as we are neighbours, but we have now instructed the Thai military to act immediately in case of urgency," said Phumtham. "If the situation escalates, it could develop into war – though for now, it remains limited to clashes," he told reporters in Bangkok.

Hindu Munnani members detained for staging protest against construction of STP at cremation ground in Coimbatore
Over 150 members of Hindu Munnani were detained on Friday for protesting against the construction of a sewage treatment plant (STP) at the cremation ground in Chokkampudur, Coimbatore. The protesters assembled outside the Coimbatore Corporation office at Town Hall, opposing the project on the grounds that the site—located in a densely populated area and directly opposite a private school with over 1,000 students—was inappropriate for a sewage facility. S. Satish, a member of the outfit's state executive committee, said the Corporation continued the work despite petitions to the District Collector and civic officials. Alleging that human remains were exhumed from the site, he accused the Corporation of ignoring public sentiment. He also claimed similar activity at cremation grounds in Kallampalayam and Suganapuram, where sites were reportedly used for garbage segregation. 'Across the State, Hindu cremation grounds are being repurposed for civic projects,,' he alleged. They said the work was rushed despite objections and warned of further protests. The outfit has planned to approach the court, citing religious and emotional concerns over the exhumation. The police said the protest was held without permission, and those who had gathered were detained.

Iran says it held 'frank' nuclear talks with European powers
ISTANBUL: Iranian diplomats said they held "frank and detailed" nuclear talks on Friday with counterparts from Germany, Britain and France, who have threatened to trigger sanctions if Tehran fails to agree a deal on uranium enrichment and cooperation with UN inspectors. The meeting in Istanbul was the first since Israel launched an attack on Iran last month targeting key nuclear and military sites, sparking a 12-day war and leading Tehran to pull away from working with the UN watchdog. The European diplomats were seen leaving the Iranian consulate shortly before 1100 GMT after spending several hours inside. Israel's offensive , which killed top commanders, nuclear scientists and hundreds of others and in which residential areas and military sites were struck also derailed US-Iran nuclear talks that began in April. Since then, the European powers, known as the E3, have threatened to trigger a so-called "snapback mechanism" under a moribund 2015 nuclear deal that would reinstate UN sanctions on Iran by the end of August. The sanctions trigger expires in October, and Tehran has warned of consequences should the E3 opt to activate it. Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi, who attended the talks alongside senior Iranian diplomat Majid Takht-Ravanchi, wrote on X he had used the meeting to criticise the European stance on the 12-day conflict with Israel. He said the snapback mechanism had also been discussed, adding: "It was agreed that consultations on this matter will continue."
