Tourist, 22, died in Thailand after holiday boat trip turned to tragedy
Corey Walsh died on holiday after he was pulled from the sea unconscious and unresponsive. In an emotional tribute his loved ones have described him as a "one of a kind gentleman"
A 22-year-old man has died while on holiday in Thailand after diving from a tour boat while intoxicated.
The tragic incident happened on Tuesday May 6 when Corey Walsh boarded a boat to enjoy a 45 minute to an hour tour off the coast of Phuket leaving from the island of Koh Racha Yai. During the trip Mr Walsh dived off the Marinda 2 tour boat and into the water.
The young Australian tourist, who is a tradesman from Frankston, Melbourne, jumped into the water near a popular snorkelling spot. But, tragedy struck when he could no longer fight against the strong current and he is believed to have been dragged underwater.
Emergency services were called at about 2.28pm local time after Mr Walsh was pulled from the water unconscious and unresponsive. Upon arrival at the port medics immediately administered CPR while Mr Walsh was still on the deck of the boat before rushing him by ambulance to Chalong Hospital in Phuket - a 15 minute car journey.
Sadly despite the best efforts of medical staff at the hospital Mr Walsh was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
Police Lieutenant Colonel Kanen Somrak from the Chalong Police Station said Mr Walsh was one of seven foreign tourists on the tour boat. He said: "The victim had consumed a large amount of alcohol before entering the wate. He was reportedly intoxicated and repeatedly jumped in and out of the sea before eventually drowning."
He also confirmed no illegal substances were found at the scene and only empty alcohol beverage bottle was discovered, reports MailOnline.
A GoFundMe was set up to help Mr Walsh's family with funeral costs and any additional expenses. A message on the page read: "This is for a Corey, a young man who struck a-lot of peoples hearts for being a kind caring and just a beautiful soul. From a stranger, to family, to friends he seemed to put a smile on anyones face.
"We would like to help the family by doing this fundraiser to show support and just how much love this man bought to this world. Our condolences go out to the Walsh family and just a massive thankyou for bringing up this one of a kind gentleman."
So far the GoFundMe page has received 100 donations totalling $10,725 and has a goal of raising $20,000.
A Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade spokesman said staff were supporting the family of the young man. He said: "We send our deepest condolences to the family at this difficult time. The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade is providing consular assistance to the family of an Australian who died in Thailand."
It's believed his body has arrived back home in Melbourne, with his family organising funeral arrangements.

The Brit had also been drinking for six hours before the crash, reports The Sydney Morning Herald. A neighbour in Redditch revealed that her parents had flown to Australia on Tuesday to be with their daughter, according to The Times. Prosecutors said Kemp had a blood alcohol content of 0.158 when she 'careered into his back' at up to 25km/h as the dad stood at a crossing on Saturday night. The court heard walkers had to 'take evasive action' to avoid Kemp's 'inexplicably dangerous' riding, which was captured on CCTV. Her 26-year-old passenger also suffered a fractured skull and broken nose. Kemp, who was in Australia on a four-month tourist visa with her partner, had been working at Durty Nelly's Irish Pub in Perth. She had been drinking with a friend from 2.30pm - who was kicked out of a bar for being too drunk - before they hired the e-scooter just before 8.30pm. Her bail bid was rejected after a magistrate ruled she posed too great a flight risk. 'It's a very difficult decision for the court to make,' the magistrate said. Brit tourist, 18, reported missing for days in Thailand is arrested on 'drug offences' in Georgia 4,000 miles away 'The temptation might be that [she] won't return… I can't manage that risk.' Phan's devastated family described him as a 'beloved husband, father of two, brother, and dear friend', and are now calling for a crackdown on e-scooter safety laws. 'We also call for a review of the governance and safety regulations surrounding hired e-scooters to help prevent further serious incidents that put lives at risk,' they said in a statement. In a statement released through police, Phan's grieving family pleaded for privacy and called on authorities to tighten e-scooter hire regulations. 'We also call for a review of the governance and safety regulations surrounding hired e-scooters to help prevent further serious incidents that put lives at risk,' they said. Kemp remains in custody on remand and is due back in court on July 15. Police prosecutors argued that Kemp's status as a foreign tourist working in Perth made her a flight risk, and highlighted the severity of her charges. Western Australian police have confirmed they will continue to investigate whether any additional offences, including possible public nuisance charges, could be laid against Kemp. 5 The Brit had also been drinking for six hours before the crash, reports The Sydney Morning Herald Credit: TikTok / aliciashona

Relatives of Angel Delight 'drug smugglers' in 'shock' as they face firing squad
The family of three Britons jailed in Indonesia for alleged drug smuggling have said they are worried for their safety. Jon Collyer, 38, and Lisa Stocker, 39 were arrested at Bali International Airport following the discovery of £300,000 worth of cocaine. Phineas Float, 31 is said to have been due to receive the haul, which was concealed within packets of Angel Delight dessert powder. Drug smuggling in Indonesia is punishable by a maximum sentence of death, with many caught importing lesser quantities imprisoned for life. Convicted drug smugglers are sometimes executed by firing squad. But the nation has not carried out an execution since 2016 and in the last few months has repatriated several foreign convicts of drug offences. Mr Collyer and his partner Ms Stocker, both from East Sussex, were stopped on arrival in Bali in February and were later allegedly found to be in possession of a total of 17 packages of cocaine, with a market value of £296,000. Jon's father Julian said he was in 'deep shock' for his son, with whom he had only been in contact once in the last three weeks. He told MailOnline: 'I'm very, very worried as any father or parent would be.' An anonymous relative of Ms Stocker said the mother had been taken advantage of and that she 'couldn't sleep at night' thinking about what might happen to her. Dean, a friend of Jon's said he was unaware the couple had travelled to Indonesia and said the situation was 'an absolute mess'. He added he was 'horrified' to learn they had both been arrested and charged with smuggling narcotics. Several high profile foreign drug smugglers have been allowed to return home from Indonesia in recent months. Serge Atlaoui, who was sentenced to death for drug offences in 2007, was repatriated to France in February. Last December Philippine drug convict Mary Jane Veloso was returned to Manila after more than a decade on death row. The trio are just three of many British nationals held abroad for drug smuggling offences. More Trending Earlier this week it was reported a 21-year-old British woman was detained in Munich in April on suspicion of carrying cannabis on a flight from Thailand – where the drug was made legal in 2022. Prisoners Abroad, a charity which represents British nationals detained overseas, said there had been a 60% increase in Britons arrested for drug offences in the last year. It said eight out of 12 people it was supporting in Indonesia were arrested on suspicion of drug smuggling. It advised those holidaymakers and overseas visitors to check the laws and customs of the country they are travelling to, especially those with particularly strict regimes.
