Is this the world's toughest job... catching tiny ANTS at 1,700 sq-mile beauty spot?

IT'S a task that makes looking for a needle in a haystack seem easy – hunting down a tiny insect in a vast area of Scottish wilderness.
Yet as part of a remarkable project to save one of the country's rarest creatures from extinction, trackers are now being challenged to scour the Cairngorms National Park in search of the narrow-headed ant.
It may not have the same profile as other at-risk animals such as the rhino or panda, but conservationists believe the half-inch long ant deserves to be protected – as it plays a surprisingly large role in the well-being of our ancient pine forests.
In Scotland, narrow-headed ants are known to nest in just a handful of places in the Cairngorms, while the UK's only other recognised population is found at a single site in Devon in the south-west of England.
And despite previous conservation schemes, its numbers are declining at a worrying rate.
Now the body which runs the 1,700 square-mile Cairngorms National Park wants to reverse the insect's fortunes by setting up a captive breeding programme.
The park authority has set aside £50,000 to hire experts to carry out an 'ant captive rearing project' that will last for up to three years.
The aim is to establish at least 50 'farmed' colonies and build up large populations of the creatures in captivity – before later releasing them into new sites in the wild.
The first major hurdle, however, involves being able to track down and capture enough of the ants to start the breeding programme. Cairngorms conservation officer Hayley Wiswell said: 'This work is ground-breaking and could completely change the fate of the species in the UK.
'But finding the nests can be challenging. They're about the size of half a football, sometimes even as small as a fist.
'They're made with pine needles, twigs, heather, moss and grass, so they're really well camouflaged.
'And they're found in woodland among pine or birch trees, on lumpy, mossy ground with lots of hummocks, hollows and deep heather. Sometime you don't see them until you're on top of them.'
To set up the colonies, the trackers will need to find queens and males from different nests.
Ms Wiswell added: 'You have to sit by the nest early in the morning on a cloudy but mild day – and as they come out, you have to pick them off the surface really quickly. It's tricky because the queens in particular are really fast – you have to sneak up on them and grab them.'
Caution is needed as the ants can deliver a sharp, pin-prick bite.
The narrow-headed ant – scientific name Formica exsecta – is black and red, with a characteristic notch in the back of its head.
It builds a distinctive domed nest typically containing around 1,000 individuals. Males are up to 10mm long while queens are slightly larger, at around 12mm.
Queens and males from different nests will be put together in a netted cage to mate before being moved to 'ant modules' – purpose-made enclosures that replicate an underground nest's tunnels.
The aim is for the queen to start producing eggs which will then seed the captive colony. The ants will be kept in their modules under close supervision for 12 months until they are self-sufficient enough to survive in the wild.
Ms Wiswell added: 'Nobody's done this before – it's really experimental.'
Despite the difficulties, she explained that the tiny ants offered huge benefits for the environment. 'They are a keystone species, doing all kinds of things in the ecosystem,' she said.
'They're highly predatory and prey on herbivorous insects like caterpillars which can defoliate plants. They also interact with the soil because their nests are largely subterranean – earthworms, for example, are significantly more prevalent around ant mounds.
'They also pick up and disperse plant seeds throughout the environment. And of course they provide a food source for lots of other animals, like badgers and pine martens.'
Nests have been identified on the Mar Lodge Estate, a national nature reserve that covers 70,000 acres in the Cairngorms and is run by the National Trust for Scotland.
The recruitment advert for trackers says: 'The species is considered to be vulnerable. Captive breeding is considered to be the next step to securing the future of this species at Mar Lodge Estate, near Braemar, and to expand the population on Deeside.
'This work is still very much experimental, and as such methods for captive rearing will need to be tested. '
Anyone taking on the task of tracking the narrow- headed ant is advised they should have access to a 4x4 vehicle, or be willing to mountain bike, walk and camp overnight in remote locations.

Walking further and faster could reduce the risk of heart attacks by almost a fifth – even if you don't reach the recommended target of 10,000 steps a day, a study has found. Analysis of more than 36,000 people with high blood pressure revealed walking more reduces the risk of major problems in the heart and blood vessels. The study published in the European Journal of Preventative Cardiology found that compared to a daily step count of 2,300 steps, every extra 1,000 steps was linked to a 17 per cent reduction in the risk of cardiovascular problems. This was the case up to a step count of 10,000 – walking more than this was associated with a lower risk of stroke. It's estimated that just over a quarter adults in the UK, around 14.4 million people, have high blood pressure, according to the British Heart Foundation. It increases the risk of heart disease, heart attacks, strokes and heart failure, according to the NHS. However, study authors say until now it has been unclear how much people with high blood pressure need to increase their physical activity to see a reduction in these risks. Professor Emmanuel Stamatakis, at the University of Sydney, Australia, who supervised the study, said: 'We found that, if you live with high blood pressure, the more you walk with greater intensity, the lower your risk for future serious cardiovascular events. 'These findings support the message that any amount of physical activity is beneficial, even below the widely recommended daily target of 10,000 steps.' Researchers analysed data from 32,192 people with high blood pressure who were part of the UK Biobank study – a cohort study of 500,000 people that collected data on diet, lifestyle, biomarkers, and health. As part of the study these participants agreed to wear an accelerometer on their wrist for seven consecutive days to measure how far and how fast they walked. The participants were followed up for eight years and during this time there were 1,935 cases of heart problems of stroke. After analysing this data researchers discovered for every 1,000 steps a day there was a 17 per cent reduction in overall risk, 22 per cent reduction in heart failure, 9 per cent reduction in risk of heart attack, and 24 per cent reduction in risk of stroke. Researchers also tracked how fast participants walked a day and recorded their fastest 30 minutes at an average of 80 steps a minute which was associated with a 30 per cent reduced risk of heart problems. However, it's not just people with high blood pressure that could benefit. Researchers also found similar results when they looked at 37,350 people without high blood pressure. Every 1,000-step increase in daily step count led to an average lower risk of overall heart problems (20.2 per cent), heart failure (23.2 per cent), myocardial infarctions (17.9 per cent) and stroke (24.6 per cent). Professor Stamatakis said: 'Clinicians should promote physical activity as standard care, especially in patients with high blood pressure. Our results can inform new, tailored public health recommendations for these patients.'

Lynx could thrive if released in Northumberland – and 72% of people in the region where they would roam support reintroducing the elusive cat, research has found. One of only two native cat species in Britain along with the wild cat, lynx vanished 800 years ago due to hunting and loss of their woodland habitat. While other lost or rare species such as beavers and pine martens are now staging comebacks in Britain, large predators such as lynx and wolves have proved more controversial, with concerns over their presence in a highly populated island and the risk they could pose to livestock. Conservationists say it is right to at least consider bringing back the lynx to help tackle problems caused by deer, boost woodland ecosystems and reverse declines in nature in Britain. A scientific assessment by the Missing Lynx Project has found the cats could thrive if released in Northumberland, the only area of England and Wales with enough woodland to support them. Around 20 animals released over several years into the Kielder forest area could grow over time into a healthy population of around 50 in north-west Northumberland and bordering areas of Cumbria and southern Scotland, the peer-reviewed paper found. Findings from more than 1,000 questionnaires as part of a year-long social consultation by the project, led by The Lifescape Project in partnership with Northumberland Wildlife Trust and The Wildlife Trusts, show 72% of people in the project area support a potential lynx reintroduction. The consultation also included an exhibition touring the region visited by almost 10,000 people, more than 100 stakeholder meetings and one-to-one interviews with community groups, farmers, landowners, foresters and business, and a series of workshops. The project even ran trips for farmers to Europe to see how people were living with reintroduced lynx there. Now, the team is continuing to work with locals to discuss how a potential reintroduction could be managed and is urging people across the UK to get involved with a national questionnaire. Lynx are solitary animals around the size of a slim Labrador, with distinctive tufty ears, which live in forests and woodland, and catch their prey – mainly deer, but also foxes, rabbits and hares – by ambushing them. Mike Pratt, chief executive of Northumberland Wildlife Trust, said it was right to consider bringing back the species to what should be the wildest part of England. The lynx could provide benefits including controlling deer, managing woodland ecosystems better and even providing ecotourism opportunities – though the chance of actually seeing what he describes as 'ghosts of the woodland' is very small. He said: 'The power of it is having this creature that should always have been there in these forests of the borders, where it's almost a symbol of the wildness of that area. 'It would symbolise that we're really serious, in what should be the wildest part of the country, (about) bringing nature back.' While the project would consider applying for a reintroduction licence 'down the line', following the positive response to the initial consultation, the focus now is on working up a plan with local people that is deliverable, he said. One of the key concerns with lynx is the likelihood of them taking sheep in fields adjoining woodland. Measures that could be used – as they have in Europe – to reduce the risk to livestock include electric fencing, guard dogs, compensation payments and people on the ground to respond to issues. Dr Deborah Brady, lead ecologist for the Lifescape Project, told the PA news agency: 'For this country we expect the risk to be reasonably low, but there is definitely a risk. 'Even if it is low, everything matters, for every sheep taken there is an impact on that individual farmer, both an emotional impact and a financial impact. 'We need to work really closely and carefully with farmers to think about how we best approach it.' Dr Brady is clear the cats pose no danger to people. 'They avoid people wherever they can, people rarely see them and there has been no recorded fatality from lynx ever, so they are no danger to adults or children, they are no danger to people,' she said. While she said their return is not going to be the 'silver bullet' to the problem of an overlarge deer population, as each lynx only kills one deer a week, the presence of a predator helps keeps herds moving and reduces overgrazing. Bringing back a native species such as the lynx can help rebuild ecosystems and start to 'turn the tide' on wildlife loss in the UK, one of the world's most nature-depleted countries, she said. Lauren Harrison, a sheep farmer on Hadrian's Wall, said she was excited but 'quite ignorant' about lynx before she visited the Missing Lynx exhibition. 'I was very excited and very positive, but I had concerns for the livestock,' she said. She has since gone on a visit with other farmers to Switzerland and Germany where she saw it was possible to live alongside the animals. Her land is sufficiently far from woodland not to be affected, but she said for farmers facing the small risk of losing sheep 'that needs to be managed, needs to be done in a way that's fair to farmers, that's practical, and doesn't get in the way of day-to-day life'. She urged other farmers in the area to get involved with the project. Alongside the practical benefits of bringing back lynx, there is an emotional value to returning the animals to Northumberland, she believes. 'It's a slightly forgotten-about area around here, we are a long way from Westminster and financial centres. 'Just to be the place that has this stunning creature coming back, I think it would give such a lift to know that's on our doorstep,' she said. Eating just three portions of French fries a week could significantly increase an individual's risk of developing type 2 diabetes, a new study suggests. In contrast, those who consume similar amounts of boiled, baked, or mashed potatoes do not face an elevated risk, researchers found. An international team, including an expert from the University of Cambridge, investigated the potential links between potato consumption and type 2 diabetes. Academics analysed health data from more than 205,000 US health workers, with repeated surveys about their diets tracking their well-being over nearly four decades. During this extensive follow-up period, some 22,000 cases of type 2 diabetes were documented. Overall the research team found that consumption of baked, boiled or mashed potatoes were not linked to an increased risk of type 2 diabetes (T2D). But people who had a higher consumption of French fries – at least three weekly servings – had a 20 per cent increased risk. And those who eat fries five times a week appeared to have a 27 per cent increased risk. 'The risks associated with potato intake varied by cooking method,' the authors wrote in The BMJ. 'The association between higher potato intake and increased T2D risk is primarily driven by intake of French fries. 'Higher intake of French fries, but not combined baked, boiled, or mashed potatoes, was associated with a higher risk of T2D.' The research team also found that replacing three servings of potatoes each week with whole grains was found to lower the risk of type 2 diabetes by 8 per cent. 'Replacing any form of potatoes, particularly French fries, with whole grains is estimated to lower the risk of T2D, reinforcing the importance of promoting whole grains as an essential part of a healthy diet,' they wrote. But replacing potatoes with white rice was associated with an increased risk of type 2 diabetes, they found. The research team also performed a review of all of the other studies on the topic which had similar findings. In a linked editorial, also published in The BMJ, experts from the US and Denmark wrote: 'This finding also corresponds to the observed associations between high intake of ultra-processed foods and high risk of type 2 diabetes – French fries are often ultra-processed, whereas baked, boiled, or mashed potatoes are often minimally processed.' They added: 'With their relatively low environmental impact and their health impact, potatoes can be part of a healthy and sustainable diet, though whole grains should remain a priority.' Commenting on the study, Dr Faye Riley, research communications lead at Diabetes UK, said: 'This research shows that the link between potatoes and type 2 diabetes isn't as clear-cut as it might seem. 'Type 2 diabetes is a complex condition, with many factors influencing its development, including genetics, age and ethnicity. 'Diet is just one part of the picture, but this study suggests that how food is prepared can make a difference and reinforces the advice to prioritise whole grains and cut back on fried or heavily processed foods as a way to support a balanced diet and reduce your risk.'
