Stellar Monarchs draw with Workington Comets in cup tie
On a windy and dusty day at the GT Tyres Arena, the Stellar Monarchs made short work of the first cup tie of the year and were virtually through after Heat 5 needing only finishers in the remaining races.
Team manager Alex Harkess said: 'It really was a match without any pressure, we knew what we had to do and hoped that everyone enjoyed their day.
'We made a pretty good start which laid the foundations, disappointed that we fell away a bit then showed what they are worth to come back and take a lead. Once again everyone showed a little bit of what they are capable of but it has to be consistent.'
Monarchs had made a strong start with an opening heat 5-1 which must have settled any nerves, Justin and Kye heading home Troy Batchelor, who went on to ride unbeaten in the remainder of the meeting.
The mega-reserve Victor won heat 2 followed by a race win for Jonatan in a continuation of his Friday night form.
Things then proceeded to slip away from Monarchs as the Comets found their feet and showed themselves to be a much better team than they looked the previous night. Trailing 25-17 after heat 7 Monarchs then set about turning things back round.
The outside line could be profitable but riders had to be bold to stay out wide under pressure. Both Grahn and Castagna took that route to great effect in winning heats 8 and 9 as the team fought back.
There was a touch of good fortune to the 5-1 in heat 11 as Vuolas stopped on the first bend and baulked partner Hook, allowing Sedgmen and Palovaara to race clear. For a moment it looked like the heat had been stopped.
Monarchs immediately capitalised in heat 12 with a good first bend work from Victor helping his partner to set up a Swedish 5-1 which is becoming a pleasing feature of the season. So the team were level.
The team shared heat 13 behind Batchelor and ensured that they couldn't lose on the day with the fourth 5-1 in heat 14 from Palovaara and Thomson.
An away win was denied after Comets had the choice of gates in heat 15 and took a 5-1 from the tapes.
An away draw is welcome for Monarchs who now await confirmation of what will happen next in the knockout cup.

Viktor Gyokeres addresses Arsenal transfer on FaceTime – 'All I can say for now'
Sporting CP sensation Viktor Gyokeres is being targeted by a number of clubs this summer, with the Swedish striker keeping his cards close to his chest regarding a potential move to Arsenal Viktor Gyokeres told former team-mate Leo Ostigard that he cannot say much about a move to Arsenal at present. The Swedish Sporting CP forward has found himself an incredibly sought-after prospect in the summer transfer window thanks to a remarkable Primeira Liga campaign. After helping his side to a league title and a Taca de Portugal triumph in 2024/25, with 39 goals and eight assists in 33 appearances, the striker has been linked with moves to the likes of Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester United and Atletico Madrid as of late. And Gyokeres failed to rule out a move to north London during a recent FaceTime call with former Coventry team-mate, Ostigard. In a cameo appearance on the Flymoduspod podcast, Gyokeres was asked by host Bernt Hulsker: "Where are you going in the summer transfer window? Can you give us a hint? Is it Arsenal? What are the alternatives?" After a brief chuckle, Gyokeres replied: "We will see. Nobody knows anything yet. I wish I had a more fun answer, but that's all I can say for now." Later in the conversation, as he was saying goodbye to his former team-mate, Ostigard then added with a hint of jest: "Viktor! Great talking to you. See you soon, and text me when everything is signed and sorted down in Arsenal." Gyokeres jokingly replied: "Yeah, yeah sure." It comes after he was asked by media last month if he liked London during a post-match interview, to which he ignored the question and shared his admiration for the Portuguese capital instead. It's no secret that Arsenal are in dire need of a striker for 2025/26. Mikel Arteta was forced to utilise midfielder Mikel Merino as a makeshift centre forward at times this season after Gabriel Jesus and Kai Havertz were sidelined through injury. Should Arsenal have had a prolific goalscorer fit for the majority of the season, the Gunners would likely have mounted a stronger challenge in the race for their first Premier League title in more than two decades. In reality, the north London side had to settle for second place for the third consecutive year, 10 points behind eventual league champions, Liverpool. Signing Gyokeres will certainly be no easy feat. As well as having to compete with a number of Premier League and European rivals, it is thought that Sporting will only look to part ways with their talisman for a fee of around £60million. That will come as a major profit to the Primeira Liga champions, who only acquired his services from Coventry for a reported £16.8m back in the summer of 2023. Meanwhile, Sporting head coach, Rui Borges, has also recently claimed that Gyokeres is content with his current club, telling reporters after a 2-0 win over Vitoria Guimaraes: "He is very happy here. He is very connected to the game, he wants to score and he is obsessed with it." He added: "He is the best striker in Europe, as the numbers show. He will be attractive, but I believe that if he doesn't leave Sporting, he will remain very committed to the club. He feels very happy here." Gyokeres isn't the only striker that Arsenal are thought to be considering at present, however, with RB Leipzig forward Benjamin Sesko also reportedly being monitored by the Gunners' top brass. The Slovenian has proven himself in the Bundesliga this season, scoring 13 goals and providing five assists. Once again, however, acquiring Sesko would come at a cost - with reports suggesting that the asking price for the 22-year-old could be as high as £93m, given his age and that he is contracted until 2029. Meanwhile, it is said that Barcelona, Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester United are also in the race for his signature. The seven Swansea City players facing uncertain futures this summer
The seven Swansea City players facing uncertain futures this summer There are question marks hanging over several Swans stars this summer Jerry Yates is one of several players whose future appears up in the air this summer (Image: 2024 Getty Images ) Swansea City's transfer window is already up and running, with three new faces already coming through the door this summer. Kilmarnock forward Bobby Wales is the latest to have been brought on board, following on from the capture of Swedish winger Zeidane Inoussa. Melker Widell, technically not a 'new' signing given the deal to bring him to the club was completed in January, is also set to meet up with his new team-mates for the first time. A fair amount of cautious excitement is now starting build within the Jack Army about what the upcoming campaign may hold, particularly after what was a strong end to the last campaign under Alan Sheehan. Sign up to the Swansea City WhatsApp service to get breaking news and top stories sent to your phone Many will feel there's still some work to be done before the first ball is kicked in August, with several areas of the squad clearly in need of strengthening. However, a few players could well be moving in the opposite direction. Harry Darling's future has obviously become a big talking point already this summer, with the centre-back yet to make a decision over his next move following the expiration of his contract. Article continues below However, he's not the only player who could be facing something of an uncertain future. Mykola Kuharevich The Ukrainian spent last season on loan at Scottish side Hibernian, where he netted seven goals in 28 games in all competitions, and appears keen to turn his stay in the green half of Edinburgh into a permanent one. With just one year left on his current contract, it seems likely the Swans will listen to offers for the 23-year-old this summer. Commenting on his future Kuharevich said recently: "I would consider this opportunity to return to Hibs again if it happens, because I am fully adapted to the team. "And, of course, there is a great excitement to feel the taste of European football together with the club and fans, from whom I have constantly experienced crazy support. "But I have a current contract with Swansea, so I am happy to spend the next season there too. "The plan now is to rest, and after returning to work and the pre-season training camp, time will tell where I end up." Jerry Yates A very similar situation to the above really. The 28-year-old spent last season out on loan at Derby County, where he scored 10 goals in 42 league outings, and his success there had understandably sparked questions over whether he might make his stay at the Rams permanent. Paul Warne was understood to be keen on exploring the possibility of a deal. But his departure, and the arrival of John Eustace, has clearly complicated the landscape. "I think Jerry has done very well - that is something we will discuss at the end of the year," Eustace said when quizzed on the forward back in April. It appears there still hasn't yet been a decision over his future, although one suspects that Swansea would be tempted to cash in should they receive the right offer. Reports earlier this month have suggested a few clubs might be circling, including Blackburn Rovers, Hull City and QPR, while there's also believed to be interest from the MLS. Andy Fisher Another player returning from a loan spell, the 27-year-old, who has one year left on his current deal, is poised to return from a short spell at Scottish side St Johnstone this summer. Fisher played 18 games for the Saints last term, having seen his hopes of first-team football with the Swans curtailed by a groin injury in pre-season, and it seems unlikely he'll be overtaking Lawrence Vigouroux for the number one jersey any time soon. As such, there are real questions marks over what may lie ahead, although the lack of real depth in goalkeeping options in light of Jon McLaughlin's departure means he may yet stick around. However, if Swansea can bringing another stopper in this summer, it would surely push him closer to the exit. Florian Bianchini The French winger only signed for the club last summer, but has largely struggled to get up to speed with the Championship. A few games in a more central role did appear to hint at an upturn in form, but the 23-year-old has still mustered up just three goals in a Swans shirt. What's more, he made just eight league starts last term, and played just 80 minutes in the 13 games overseen by Sheehan. Swansea shelled out just over £2m for him last year, and his current deal at the club is set to run until 2028, and those points alone may well see him earn another chance. But one suspects a tidy offer would be welcomed. A loan spell away is another possible option, of course. Jay Fulton The midfielder has already been tipped as a possible target for Plymouth Argyle this summer, and with one year left on his current deal, it's entirely plausible that Swansea might earmark the Scot as someone they can potentially make a bit of cash on. Fulton started just 13 games in the league last season, and is still seen as a solid squad player by those on the inside. He's also been a superb servant to the club over the years, but it's difficult to envisage a time next term where he's a considered a real first-choice option. Sign up to our Swansea City newsletter here. At 31, and having been with the club for seven years, now might well be seen as the best time for a new chapter. Goncalo Franco One that Swans fans will absolutely not want to happen. As things stand, there's no reason to believe that Franco will be moving on from before the close of the window, and the player himself is understood to be happy with the Swans. Article continues below But after such an impressive debut season in the Championship, it was perhaps inevitable he would catch the eye of potential suitors elsewhere. Sources in Portugal have indicated to WalesOnline that a few clubs are already asking about the 24-year-old, with sides from England, Germany and, of course, the player's homeland, all believed to be keeping tabs. Swansea are understandably keen to keep him on board, but it's perfectly possible that their resolve could be tested before the summer is out.

Benjamin Sesko or Viktor Gyokeres - which striker should Arsenal sign?
Arsenal's long and protracted hunt for a new striker appears to have been narrowed down to two high-profile names. Mikel Arteta has made no bones about his side's need for an out-and-out goalscorer, and new sporting director Andrea Berta has made it priority number one for the summer transfer window. Key injuries to Gabriel Jesus and Kai Havertz forced the Gunners to play large swathes of the season with Mikel Merino as a makeshift forward. But the north London club now appear to be closing in on a marquee attacking signing as they look to rebuild ahead of a fresh title tilt next term. With the window soon to open, it appears that Benjamin Sesko could well be the man for the job, with Arsenal said to have held 'concrete talks' over a £92.5million move for the RB Leipzig talisman. Wake up to find news on your club in your inbox every morning with Metro's Football Newsletter. Sign up to our newsletter and then select your team in the link we'll send you so we can get football news tailored to you. But the Gunners – and Berta, in particular – are also keen to explore a deal for Viktor Gyokeres, the Swedish striker who has been scoring goals for fun at Sporting Lisbon. Both imposing and talented figures, a deal for either would represent a serious upgrade on Arsenal's current attacking option,. but which one is a better fit? Just turning 22, Sesko has enjoyed a marked and steady rise since first breaking through at Austrian side Liefering in 2020. Soon joining RB Salzburg, it wasn't long before the Slovenian international made the switch to the Bundesliga, moving to RB Leipzig for just over £20m two summers ago. An impressive first season saw him added to the wishlists of several top clubs before last summer's European Championship, but Sesko rejected a move in favour of a new contract at Leipzig with a loftier release clause. Sesko's numbers are not mind-blowing – he has 27 league goals in his two Bundesliga campaigns – but it is his age and versatility that have drawn Arsenal's attention once again this summer. Blessed with a 6ft 5in frame, Sesko's obvious physical advantages would make him an asset for Arsenal, who create a high proportion of their chances from crosses and set pieces. The striker would provide more than just a focal point at the top of the pitch and is more than capable of dropping deep to receive the ball and link up play, even if his passing still has plenty of room for improvement. When compared to Gyokeres, those attributes make him seem a more natural fit for Arteta's side in its current iteration, although Sesko would certainly need time to adapt to Arsenal's style given he playes in a 4-4-2 formation alongside a striker partner at Leipzig. Regardless, his ability to occupy two centre backs in the central area of the pitch would provide a hugely beneficial distraction for Bukayo Saka, while his instinctive finishing inside the box stands out when compared to the aforementioned – and sometimes wasteful – Havertz and Jesus. It's been quite a tough season for Leipzig, which forced them to change coach after a disappointing Champions League campaign. They've been struggling, which reflects on his output, but he's still been one of their best and most consistent players. Sesko's strengths are certainly his physicality and speed – he's great at making dangerous runs in behind defences, but he's also a very clinical and instinctive finisher, especially when the ball drops to him in the area. His work rate is good and he's a willing runner off the ball as well. His hold-up play is quite strong, but I think his link-up play is a side of his game that he can still improve. It's not that he's bad at that side of the game, but compared to someone like Havertz, he's not at that level. In particular, his passing will need to get a lot better in a side like Arsenal. But during his young career, he's shown he can take those steps forward. His mentality is definitely a strength – he's a player who wants to learn and wants to improve so in that sense he will be a quick learner and offers Arsenal something completely different. Rune Gjerulff, German football expert and editor of Bulinews Sesko's age – 22 compared to Gyokeres, who will soon turn 27 – is also a factor. While their priorities may change under Berta, Arsenal have tended to recruit younger talent which can be moulded to Arteta's style and then enjoy their peak years at the club. Arsenal may have to pay a premium for that potential, but the large fees previously splashed out on Declan Rice and Havertz show they are willing to spend big if they believe they have found the right player. Sesko could well be that, but any positive impact he makes at Arsenal may not be instant. If Sesko is the diamond in the rough, then perhaps Gyokeres is the ready-made star. Plucked from relative obscurity after a prolific campaign in the Championship, the Swede has enjoyed two remarkable seasons in Portugal: 66 league games, 68 league goals, and two league titles. Even taking away his 12 penalties in the Portuguese league this season, Gyokeres' tally of 27 non-penalty league goals is three more than anyone else in Europe's top-five leagues last season. Some will have doubts as to whether Gyokeres can replicate those numbers in one of Europe's elite leagues, but the six goals he scored in eight Champions League games last season will go some way to easing those concerns. Like Sesko, Gyokeres would also offer Arsenal a far more physical presence at the top of the pitch. The Swede's pace and power have helped him create a host of his goals running in behind, while he is also blessed with a remarkably powerful shot when in front of goal. While more than happy to sniff out chances in the box, Sporting's 3-4-3 formation sees Gyokeres often drift out to the left flank to pick up the ball and create his own chances. But while he is also able to use his size and strength to hold up play, Gyokeres isn't as comfortable coming short with his back to goal or in the air, two traits often required of an Arsenal striker in Arteta's system. Gyokeres is a bunch of different strikers blended into one. He's a bulldozer, but he's also got that turn of pace and knack of finding himself in shooting areas. Some strikers, you can see they overthink things, but he'll shoot first and ask questions later. At 6ft 2in, he could definitely add an aerial presence to his game to take himself to the next level, but he's very good at using his chest as a magnet to win these aerial duels. He may not be as fearless as others when it comes to aerial duels, but he knows how to use his strengths to his advantage to hold up the ball and bring others into play. He's not someone like Roberto Firmino who is going to be dropping deep, so if Arsenal need to change certain things to get the best out of Gyokeres then they should. Zach Lowy, European football expert Such characteristics mean that the potential signing of Gyokeres could force Arsenal to rethink how they attack in order to get the best out of the Swede. The Gunners will undoubtedly still look to control the ball, but expecting Gyokeres to fulfil the same role as Havertz in Arteta's side seems impractical. Arteta could look to his long-time mentor, Pep Guardiola, for inspiration, who has successfully incorporated the pace and physicality of Erling Haaland into Manchester City's possession-focused style. Could Arsenal evolve to use Gyokeres similarly? Perhaps it's worth a try. With both strikers full of talent, the decision between Sesko and Gyokeres may well come down to where Arsenal's intentions lie heading into next season. While Arteta has revived the club's fortunes since his arrival, seeing Tottenham win the Europa League served as another painful reminder that the Gunners have not lifted a major trophy of their own since 2020. The one thing you do need to have now in games is a bench that can impact the game. With the injuries last season, Arsenal have been a bit light in how they can impact the game in the second half. That also affects your ability to rotate and stay competitive on all fronts and we saw that in how their Premier League form fell off as they focused in the Champions League. So beyond just a striker, it's about filling those gaps in the squad to give themselves the best chance of narrowing the gap to Liverpool next season. Former Arsenal defender Nigel Winterburn, speaking to Metro via Wildz Online Casino. Gyokeres, valued between £64-67m, looks likely to be the cheaper of the two options and would arrive in the prime of his career and ready to hit the ground running. Arsenal may have to adapt their playstyle to suit the Swede, but perhaps rolling the dice is what the Gunners need to consider having fallen short in three successive campaigns. More Trending Sesko could well have a similar impact; the young striker is yet to be overwhelmed by his rapid ascent and could well take to the rigours of the Premier League and Arteta's style in no time at all. But by signing the Slovenian, Arsenal are more than likely buying into another project, and it remains to be seen if fans would be happy to wait for him to fulfil that talent if it takes time for him to find his feet. All being well, the 22-year-old could make himself Arsenal's first-choice number nine for the next decade, something which may appeal to the club, having missed out on a similar talent in Alexander Isak back in 2022. But Gyokeres could well prove the man for the here and now, not to mention his lower price tag, which may well allow Arsenal to strengthen in other key areas and equip Arteta with a squad finally able to get over the line in the league.
