City to host national mayoral summit in Oct
State govt sources said that the summit is being organized on Oct 15 and 16 to commemorate the 150th birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, who served as president of the Ahmedabad municipality over a century ago. The conclave will be themed on 'Let us Unite Together to Innovate, Lead and Transform', sources said.
Sources involved in planning of the event said that sessions of the conclave will include rethinking planning and governance frameworks, encouraging climate resilient development, catalysing digital urban features, main-streaming women and youth in urban development, redefining city investment and climate finance.
Sources said that over the recent past, Ahmedabad has implemented modernisation projects while maintaining its cultural legacy. Major projects such as the Sabarmati Riverfront development, multimodal transport hub (BRTS, AMTS and Metro), Smart City initiatives, urban greening, sports and cultural activities, and high-quality infrastructure, have been undertaken, sources said.
Ahmedabad also hosted the sixth cycle of Urban 20 (U20) 2023, one of the 11 engagement groups under G20. During India's G20 presidency, U20 India collaborated with global cities to create a roadmap for transformative urban impact and narrowing gaps between policy and implementation across governance levels. During the U20 Mayoral Summit, the state govt released the Ahmedabad Climate Resilient City Action Plan: Towards a Net Zero Future by 2070.
A heritage walk, visit to the Sabarmati Riverfront and Atal Bridge, and a visit to GIFT City are also being planned as part of the two-day conclave, sources said.

Bengaluru Metro: BJP's Munirathna asks why Bettahalasuru station was dropped, DK Shivakumar slams MLA's ‘selfish motive'
BJP MLA Munirathna and Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar locked horns in the state Assembly Tuesday over the alleged dropping of Bettahalasuru station which is part of Phase 2B of the Bengaluru Metro project. Phase 2B, also known as the Blue line, is a key link to Bengaluru's Kempegowda International Airport. Shivakumar, in his response to Munirathna during Question Hour in the House, stated that the Bettahalasuru station was dropped after real estate major Embassy Group failed to fund its construction as per an earlier agreement. The station was originally included in the 2018 DPR which was forwarded to the Centre. The state also acquired land for the project after the Embassy Group committed to funding the station's construction at a cost of Rs 120 crore. However, according to Shivakumar, the group has paid only Rs 1 crore so far. Raising the issue in the Assembly, MLA Munirathna questioned how a private entity's funding failure could stall a public infrastructure project. 'This station serves the public, not private interests. Land acquisition and DPR approval are complete. The government must act to protect public interest,' he said, adding that local MLA Krishna Byre Gowda had also written to Shivakumar underlining the station's importance. 'MLA Munirathna has 70-80 acres of land in the area' Shivakumar, however, hit back stating that Munirathna owned 70-80 acres of land around the station, which is why he insisted on developing it. 'As per norms, it is allowed to name the station after a company if they sponsor the construction with CSR funds. Prime Minister (Narendra) Modi praised the model and Opposition leader (R) Ashoka was also there. Munirathna has about 70-80 acres of land there and hence he needs a Metro station,' the deputy chief minister said. To which Munirathna quipped, 'If DCM D K Shivakumar makes a call to Embassy builders, they will make the payment in 24 hours. Builders in Bengaluru only listen to him.' Replying to him, Shivakumar stated, 'Self-interest is natural. The Embassy (Group) has about 250 acres and they were willing to pay Rs 120 crore of the total cost of Rs 140 crore to brand the Metro station there. They have given only Rs 1 crore till now. We will build the station and name it after Munirathna if he pays for it.' The controversy comes even as Embassy Group, through Vikas Telecom Pvt Ltd, which is part of Embassy Office Parks REIT, is funding the Rs 100-crore construction of the Kadubeesanahalli station on the Outer Ring Road (ORR) corridor under Phase 2A of the Metro project. The station, to be named 'Embassy Tech Village Kadubeesanahalli Metro Station,' is part of a 17-km stretch from Central Silk Board to KR Puram with 16 stations.

4,000 institutions under One Nation One Subscription scheme haven't received benefits: Par panel
Around 4,000 out of 7,008 eligible institutions under the One Nation One Subscription (ONOS) scheme of the Ministry of Education have not received its benefits, a parliamentary panel has flagged. The Standing Committee on Education, Women, Children, Youth and Sports, headed by Congress MP Digvijaya Singh, directed the furnishing of updated information on the current status of the ONOS' reach. 'The Committee notes that the ONOS scheme has been approved and implemented. The Committee's recommendation had called for the accelerated implementation of the ONOS scheme. However, as the Committee noted in its 364th Report on Demand for Grants of the Higher Education Department (FY 24-25), about 4,000 of the 7,008 eligible institutions had still not received the benefits of the ONOS. 'The Committee would direct the Department to provide updated information on the current status of the ONOS's reach, and provide an update on the steps taken to accelerate the scheme's implementation,' the panel said in its report. The Committee also noted that the Anusandhan National Research Foundation (ANRF) Act, 2023 was brought out in letter and spirit but it has not been able to spend any of its budgeted funds for the previous financial year. 'As per the provisions, an Executive Council was constituted wherein high-level strategic directions were given, performance monitored and implementation of the objectives of the Foundation was envisioned. However, in its discussions on the Demands for Grants of the Department of Higher Education in FY 2024-25, the Committee was informed that the ANRF had not been able to spend any of its budgeted funds for the previous financial year. 'In this regard, the Committee needs to be apprised of the current status of the ANRF's functioning and further initiatives undertaken, if any,' the report added.
