India Gazette4 hours ago

Dehradun (Uttarakhand) [India], June 23 (ANI): Highlighting the significance of sports in daily life, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on Monday said playing a sport signifies the shared values of humanity, unity, and peace.
Addressing an event organised to mark June 23 International Olympic Day, Uttarakhand CM Pushkar Singh Dhami said, ' It is a matter of great pride for us that an event has been organised in Dehradun on this International Olympic Day. This reminds us that playing a sport is not just about winning a medal but also signifies the shared values of humanity, unity and peace.'
'Today, when we talk about the Olympics, we feel proud of the achievements of our Indian athletes - be it Neeraj Chopra winning the gold medal for javelin throw, Mirabai Chanu, Lovelina or the Indian hockey team... Our Indian sportspersons, including those from Uttarakhand, are making the country proud,' he added.
Earlier in the day, Padma Bhushan awardee, eminent environmentalist and founder of HESCO, Anil Joshi, met Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami at his official residence.
The Chief Minister said that on this occasion, he had a meaningful discussion with him on important topics like environmental protection, green development, and the implementation of GEP in the state.
Meanwhile, on Sunday, the CM said that the ongoing Kedarnath Yatra had become a confluence of the remarkable synergy between spiritual devotion and development in the state.
Taking to X, CM Dhami announced that in a span of just 48 days, more than 11.4 lakh devotees have paid their respects at the revered Kedarnath shrine.'
Describing the pilgrimage as 'a wonderful confluence of development with faith', the Chief Minister said the surge in footfall has not only strengthened Uttarakhand's spiritual landscape but also significantly boosted its local economy.
'This is not just a pilgrimage but has become a symbol of Uttarakhand's economic, cultural and spiritual prosperity. Hail Baba Kedar!' he said, sharing updates using the hashtag #CharDhamYatra2025.
The annual Char Dham Yatra, which includes pilgrimages to Kedarnath, Badrinath, Gangotri, and Yamunotri, is one of the most significant religious journeys in Hinduism.
The state government has undertaken a series of infrastructure upgrades in recent years--including improved roads, helicopter services, and better accommodation--to ensure a safer and smoother pilgrimage experience for devotees.
This year, the Kedarnath Dham has seen an unprecedented inflow of pilgrims, which officials attribute to both improved facilities and increasing spiritual interest. (ANI)

KL Rahul smashes first Test ton in almost 18 months, Shubman Gill cannot help but applaud: ‘High class stuff'

KL Rahul might have been kicking himself in the first innings of the Headingley Test against England after he failed a rash shot. After doing all the hard work, the right-hander threw his wicket away as he chased a wide delivery off the bowling of Brydon Carse. As a result, he walked back to the dressing room for 42. However, KL Rahul was a man possessed in the second innings as he helped India solidify their position in the first Test of the five-match series. India vs England, 1st Test: KL Rahul smashes his ninth hundred as the visitors solidify their position in Headingley. (AP) Rahul, 33, brought up his ninth Test century on Day 4 of the ongoing first match. He brought up the milestone off the bowling of Shoaib Bashir in the 62nd over of the game. The right-hander took 202 balls to bring up the three-figure mark. This is KL Rahul's first Test ton in almost 18 months. He had last scored a century against South Africa in the Centurion Test in December 2023. Out of his nine Test hundreds, eight have been as an opener for Rahul. The senior batter has arguably had the best technique among all batters in the Headingley Test, and finally, he has been rewarded for his hard work and determination. Upon reaching the milestone, Rahul took his helmet off and soaked in the applause of the Headingley crowd. The India captain, Shubman Gill, also had a bright smile on his face as he applauded the feat of KL Rahul. 'High-class stuff from a high-class player. What an absolute joy to watch,' said Nasseer Hussain on commentary. 'Just a beautiful cover drive, that's how he got to a wonderful hundred,' said Michael Atherton. This is KL Rahul's third hundred in England. He is the only Indian opening batter to have three centuries in the UK. He now averages close to 40 in the country. On Day 3, Rahul helped India not lose wickets in a cluster. After the loss of Yashasvi Jaiswal (4), Rahul retrieved India's innings along with Sai Sudharsan (30). Rahul kept moving the scoreboard along, and England bowlers were unable to create pressure and curb the run flow. Also Read: IND vs ENG Live Score: Rishabh Pant on the charge after half-century On Day 4, Brydon Carse struck in the very first over as he dismissed India captain Shubman Gill. Rishabh Pant then joined Rahul in the middle and the duo had to toil hard as England bowlers did not give away any easy freebies. However, after grinding it out in the first hour, Rahul unleashed his wide array of shots. He was helped by Harry Brook as the England batter dropped a sitter in the slips. Pant and Rahul then eventually saw out the first session. In the second session, Rahul and Pant tried to score aggressively. The England attack had no answers, and eventually, Rahul reached the three-figure mark in the 62nd over of the second innings. India in the driver's seat in the Headingley Test The Shubman Gill-led India are completely in the driver's seat owing to Rahul and Pant's heroics in the second innings of the Headingley Test. India's lead has gone past the 200-run mark. The Headingley pitch has also not deteriorated, and India would look to give England a target of more than 400 runs. It must be mentioned that KL Rahul started opening the batting again in the longest format in the absence of Rohit Sharma in the Perth Test against Australia. He was dropped down the order once Rohit decided to open the batting in the Melbourne Test. However, Rohit's retirement from Tests paved the way once again for Rahul to open the batting.

Ishan Kishan in action for Nottinghamshire (Image via X/@ImTanujSingh) Ishan Kishan made an instant impact in his County Championship debut for Nottinghamshire, hammering a blistering 87 off just 98 deliveries against Yorkshire on Monday. Facing an attack featuring England's Dom Bess and New Zealand pacer Will O'Rourke, Kishan showcased his trademark aggressive flair, lacing his knock with 12 fours and a six at a strike rate nearing 89. Signed on a short-term contract to cover two Championship matches, the Indian wicketkeeper-batter has stepped in for South Africa's Kyle Verreynne, who is currently on Test duty in Zimbabwe. Kishan's stint includes the games against Yorkshire at Trent Bridge and Somerset in Taunton. For India, Kishan has featured in two Tests so far, with a fifty to his name, but his reputation primarily rests on his attacking white-ball exploits. In ODIs, he averages over 42 with a double hundred to his credit, while his T20I record includes nearly 800 runs at a brisk strike rate of 124. — TrentBridge (@TrentBridge) Kishan's county appearance comes after a productive IPL season with Sunrisers Hyderabad, where he struck 354 runs at a healthy average of 35.40 and a strike rate exceeding 152, including a century. Poll Do you think Ishan Kishan's performance in county cricket will impact his selection for future India assignments? Yes, definitely No, it won't matter Having recently reclaimed his BCCI central contract — back in the C-grade bracket after missing out last year — Kishan's lively start in England is timely as he seeks to keep himself in the selectors' frame for future India assignments. Airlines halt Gulf flights as US enters Israel-Iran war; Dubai, Doha services affected: What will be its impact?

Major international airlines extended flight cancellations to the Persian Gulf, disrupting air traffic to critical hubs such as Dubai after the US struck nuclear sites in Iran and Tehran vowed to retaliate. Singapore Airlines said it would suspend service to Dubai until Wednesday night and warned more flights could be cancelled due to the severity of the situation. British Airways added cancellations to Dubai and Doha, while Air France-KLM reportedly will scrap flights to Dubai and Riyadh, reported Bloomberg. The airlines' decisions hinted at the potential for escalation of the war between Israel and Iran after US President Donald Trump joined the fight by attacking Iran's key nuclear sites. The dramatic escalation risks retaliation from Tehran, which will potentially disrupt economies that had previously been unaffected by the fallout of regional hostilities, said Bloomberg. Prior to the US strikes on Sunday, Tehran threatened to hit US bases in the Persian Gulf should Washington get involved, and close down the Strait of Hormuz, an important oil trade route. 'A widening conflict around the Strait of Hormuz could threaten to disrupt global airline traffic, particularly if flight restrictions to key transfer hubs in Qatar and the UAE were to occur,' said Bloomberg Intelligence analysts Eric Zhu and George Ferguson. Excluding local carriers, Indian airlines including IndiGo, Turkish Airlines and British Airways are among the most exposed, they wrote. Singapore Airlines has cancelled flights to Dubai from the city-state since Sunday over security concerns. British Airways diverted a Dubai-bound flight to Zurich after it reached Saudi Arabia's airspace in the early hours of Sunday. Another jet returned to Heathrow after going as far as Egypt, the news agency reported. Asian airlines have also taken steps to safeguard passengers and crews. Japan Airlines plans to have flights between Tokyo's Haneda airport and Doha avoid airspace above the Persian Gulf and Gulf of Oman, adding about 20 minutes to journeys. Air India will progressively avoid the use of certain airspace over the Persian Gulf in the coming days, reported Bloomberg. The actions come after President Donald Trump decided to attack Iran after decades of hostility. The possibility of further disruption will depend on how forcefully Iran retaliates. Trump has threatened more attacks if Tehran doesn't capitulate. The UK is organising a chartered flight for British nationals who want to leave Israel, while Germany sent a military transport plane to extract citizens and France said it also plans repatriation flights, the news agency said.
