Italian demand boosts Abu Dhabi's visitor economy
Etihad Airways is reporting significant growth in travel demand between Italy and Abu Dhabi. The uplift is supporting Abu Dhabi's tourism ambitions and reinforcing broader commercial and cultural links between Italy and the UAE.
Jurriaan Stelder, SVP Network, Alliances and Industry Affairs, Etihad Airways, said: "The consistent growth we're seeing from the Italian market highlights Abu Dhabi's appeal as both a destination and global hub. Italian travellers are responding well to our offering, with steady demand across both leisure and business segments. This connectivity is strengthening tourism and supporting deeper ties across trade, culture and investment."
Italy has emerged as one of Etihad's fastest-growing European markets, with travel between Italy and Abu Dhabi increasing by 76% compared to 2023. This reflects the growing appeal of the UAE capital as a destination for Italian visitors.
This sustained demand has prompted Etihad to increase frequencies to triple-daily flights between Milan Malpensa Airport and Abu Dhabi, and double-daily flights from Rome Fiumicino Airport, providing Italian travellers with convenient options to visit Abu Dhabi.
The third daily frequency on Milan will be operated by Etihad's new Airbus A321LR, offering a premium experience that includes a dedicated First class cabin, fully lie-flat Business seats, high-speed Wi-Fi, and an enhanced onboard dining service. This aircraft brings Etihad's signature long-haul comfort to short- and medium haul travel, further elevating the travel experience for Italian guests.
From November, Etihad will be offering more than 10,000 weekly seats between Italy and Abu Dhabi per direction, representing an 80% capacity increase compared to November 2023. The number of premium seats available will double to more than 1,000 per week, responding to increased demand in this segment.
The airline continues to strengthen its presence in Italy through strategic partnerships. Through our partners ITA Airways and Trenitalia, travellers can travel from 14 domestic airports and 31 railway stations across Italy to connect to Etihad's flights from Rome and Milan. This builds on the successful codeshare partnership with ITA Airways which was established in December 2021, enabling enhanced connectivity between the UAE and Italy.
Italian travellers are embracing Etihad's Abu Dhabi Stopover programme, which offers complimentary hotel stays for up to two nights, allowing visitors to experience Abu Dhabi's cultural attractions, pristine beaches, and world-class entertainment venues. Stopover bookings from the Italian market have grown by 92% since 2024.
As demand from the Italian market continues to grow, Etihad is positioned to accommodate increasing passenger numbers with its current schedule.

Nasdaq Dubai welcomed leading Dubai-based bank Mashreq debut listing on the exchange with the admission of a $500 million sukuk issued by Mashreq Al Islami Sukuk Company. The Trust Certificates, due in 2030, were issued under Mashreq's $2.5 billion Trust Certificate Issuance Programme and are being admitted as a secondary listing following strong demand in the primary market. It is a clear demonstration of Mashreq's long-term commitment to Islamic finance, the deepening of cross-border capital flows, and the UAE's continued emergence as a global nexus for ethical and Sharia-compliant financing." "Through this programme, we are proud to reinforce investor trust and contribute meaningfully to the maturing of Islamic capital markets," he stated. Abdelaal said the debut listing on Nasdaq Dubai marks a new chapter in Mashreq's capital markets journey. "This sukuk issuance not only attracted strong investor interest, but also affirms our disciplined approach to funding, even in a complex macro environment. As we continue to diversify our capital structure through Sharia-compliant channels, we remain committed to delivering strong fundamentals, market transparency, and sustainable value for all stakeholders," he added. Welcoming the Mashreq listing, Ali said it reflects the bank's growing ambitions in the Islamic finance sector and underscores DFM's role as a leading marketplace that connects regional issuers with global investors. Automation key to refinery resilience amid slowing oil demand, says IEA
The International Energy Agency's latest Oil Market Report demonstrates a structural shift in the industry, accelerating the need for automation and intelligent flow control at refineries to maintain profitability and operational resilience. According to the IEA's May 2025 report, global oil demand growth is expected to slow to 740,000 barrels per day this year, driven by record electric vehicle (EV) adoption and a challenging business climate. At the same time, OPEC+ is increasing output, and refining margins reached a 12-month high in April, underscoring the volatility that refinery operators must now navigate, it stated. In this environment, automation and intelligent flow control technologies are becoming essential tools to best weather economic headwinds and remain competitive on the global stage, says an industry expert in the oil and gas sector. Speaking at IMI's recent Petrochem Conference in Sardinia, Nicola Dessalvi, Petrochem Manager for Process Automation at IMI, said: "Refineries are facing a perfect storm of slowing demand, unpredictable pricing, and rising supply. In this context, automation is no longer a luxury – it's a necessity." "By integrating intelligent control systems and real-time diagnostics, operators can reduce plant downtime during planned maintenance, optimise throughput, curb energy consumption, and respond dynamically to market shifts," he stated. According to Dessalvi, automation technologies such as advanced valve diagnostics and predictive maintenance systems can help refineries maintain high margins even as market conditions fluctuate. As the global energy landscape continues to evolve, these tools can ensure plant managers are equipped to make data-driven decisions, reduce unplanned downtime, and extend the life of critical assets. They will also be crucial to maximising the efficiency of existing infrastructure during the transition to lower-carbon operations, it stated. "Refining margins may be strong today, but the underlying market signals are clear," remarked Dessalvi.

Abu Dhabi completes gas systems remediation in buildings
The Department of Energy – Abu Dhabi (DoE) has announced that it has successfully completed the gas systems remediation project in buildings with a 100% completion rate. According to DoE, over 200,000 safe working hours were recorded during the implementation of the programme, which began in August 2023, as part of ongoing efforts to ensure the safety of gas systems across the emirate. The work was successfully completed on over 2,400 buildings, including more than 200 buildings classified as high-risk, which were addressed urgently, said the DoE in a statement. Additionally, 550 previously undetected gas leaks were identified and repaired, and all gas filling lines were relocated outside the buildings as part of the programme. It also involved the replacement of more than 450 gas tanks and control panels, as well as the installation of over 10,000 gas leak detectors inside kitchens. Dr Saif Saeed Al Qubaisi, Acting Director General of Regulatory Affairs at DoE, said: "Safety is a collective effort and a shared responsibility among all stakeholders in this sector. Building owners play a vital role in maintaining the safety and security of the community." "We began our inspection and remediation project in August 2023 and have successfully inspected over 3,100 buildings across the emirate," he stated. Eng Ahmed Alsheebani, Executive Director of the Petroleum Products Regulatory Affairs Sector at DoE, said: "Abu Dhabi continues to lead in ensuring the safe use of gas systems, recognising gas as a vital resource that impacts various aspects of daily life and plays a key role- alongside clean and renewable energy sources - in supporting the stability of the energy sector." According to the Executive Regulations for Gas Works in Buildings, property owners are required to sign an annual maintenance contract with a gas operator permitted by the DoE.
