Suspected arson causes a second major power outage in south of France

NICE, France — A second major power outage hit southeastern France early Sunday, this time in the city of Nice, after a suspected arson damaged an electrical facility.
Police currently have not established a link between the blackout that affected parts of Nice as well as nearby cities of Cagnes-sur-Mer and Saint-Laurent-du-Var, and a power outage on Saturday that disrupted the city of Cannes during the closing day of its renown film festival.
The Nice blackout started around 2 a.m. and left some 45,000 households without electricity. The city's trams stopped and power was briefly cut to the Nice Côte d'Azur airport during its overnight closure hours.
Power was fully restored by 5:30 a.m., according to the energy provider company Enedis.
The Nice public prosecutor said a criminal investigation has been opened for 'organized arson.'
On Saturday, two other installations in the Alpes Maritime department were damaged in what officials also suspected to be arson, temporarily cutting power to 160,000 homes, including events at the Cannes Film Festival.
Nice Mayor Christian Estrosi condemned Sunday's attack and said the city had filed a complaint.
'I strongly denounce these malicious acts targeting our country,' he said on X. He ordered all sensitive electrical infrastructure in the city to be placed under police protection.
'These actions can have serious consequences, particularly on hospitals,' Estrosi said at a press briefing on Sunday. 'As long as the perpetrators haven't been caught, we will remain on high alert.'

Police look for suspect in stabbing incident
Windsor Police are on the lookout for a male suspect following an early morning stabbing incident on June 6. At approximately 1 p.m., police were called to Wyandotte Street West and Church Street where they found a 24-year-old male with two stab wounds to the body and another 24-year-old male with a facial wound. The third male on the scene was unharmed. After investigating, police found a verbal altercation occurred between the group of three males and the unknown suspect. Both males were brought to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The case remains under investigation.

Montreal police searching for missing man, 72, with cognitive impairment
Montreal police are asking the public for help locating a 72-year-old man with cognitive impairment who has difficulty navigating. Richard Bastien is described as white, five feet 11 inches tall and 170 pounds. He has brown eyes and grey hair. He speaks both English and French. Bastien was last seen Friday afternoon at around 2 p.m. at his residence in the Sud-Ouest. He mainly uses a wheelchair or walks to get around, police say. Bastien doesn't have access to his medication, and investigators are concerned for his health and safety. He was last seen wearing black pants and a blue, plaid shirt.

Man in his 70s injured after being struck by vehicle in Scarborough
Police on scene at near Markham Road and Lawrence Avenue East after a man in his 70s was struck by a vehicle Friday June 6, 2025 (CP24 photo). A man in his 70s was rushed to hospital after reportedly being struck by a vehicle in Scarborough late Friday night, police say. The collision happened at around 9:47 p.m. near Markham Road and Lawrence Avenue East. The driver did remain on scene, according to officials. Paramedics say they transported the victim to a trauma centre where he is suffering from serious but non-life-threatening injuries. Eastbound Lawrence Avenue was closed at Markham Road but is expected to reopen shortly. Police are advising drivers to expect delays in the area.
