KUCHING (April 27): Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are set to benefit from stronger financial support with the launch of Affin Bank Berhad's latest branch at iCOM Square here today.
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the opening of the new branch signals not only the expansion of Affin's footprint in Sarawak but also the bank's commitment to empowering local businesses to thrive in a rapidly evolving economy.
'SMEs are not just contributors to the GDP – they are the heartbeat of Sarawak's economy. They create jobs, power local innovation, and serve as the primary engine of inclusive growth.
'To unlock their full potential, we must continue building an environment where local enterprises can thrive, through better access to financing, business support services, and digital capabilities,' he said in his speech which was delivered by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas at the official launch of Affin iCOM Square Branch here today.
Abang Johari commended Affin Bank for playing a key role in this ecosystem.
'From facilitating access to working capital and trade finance, to enabling operational efficiency and digitalisation, Affin has taken deliberate steps to meet the evolving needs of entrepreneurs in Sarawak.
'These efforts go beyond products. They reflect Affin's commitment to building real value by empowering local businesses to compete, scale, and lead,' he said.
The Premier emphasised that meaningful development must begin with access to capital, financial services, and tools that enable entrepreneurship and upward mobility.
'For our rural communities, small businesses, and youth stepping into the digital economy, banking must not only be accessible but empowering as well.
'With Affin's comprehensive range of banking products and services, Sarawak is paving the way for a more financially inclusive society where opportunity reaches all,' he said.
He also said that a robust financial system is essential for a thriving economy.
'Affin plays a crucial role in this transformation. Its integrated structure combining Affin Bank, Affin Islamic, and Affin Hwang Investment Bank provides a seamless platform for individuals, businesses, and investors alike.'
With plans to expand its branch network in Sarawak from eight to 14 by the end of the year, Affin is making strides in bringing financial services closer to communities across the state, ensuring no one is left behind, he added.
In highlighting that Sarawak's major projects such as the Tanjung Embang deep-sea port, the new international airport, and the Borneo Renewable Energy Corridor would require financial models rooted in long-term value creation, Abang Johari said Affin's ability to provide financial solutions and support are key to bridging that vision with the capital to make it a reality.
He stressed that banking must be responsive, locally attuned, and digitally enabled to meet the demands of a modern, connected Sarawak.
'The launch of this branch reflects our collective journey — a journey toward a more financially inclusive, economically competitive, and socially resilient Sarawak,' he said.
Also present were Deputy State Secretary (Economic Planning and Development) Dato Sri Dr Muhammad Abdullah Zaidel, Affin Bank Berhad chairman Dato Agil Natt, Affin Bank president and group chief executive officer Datuk Wan Razly Abdullah.

Premier: Sarawak's GDP expected to surpass 5 pct this year

(Seated from left) Sagah, Uggah, Ting and Mancha in a photocall with other guests during the event. MIRI (June 11): Sarawak's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth is expected to exceed 5 per cent by the end of this year, driven by strategic investments in infrastructure and green technology, said Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg. He attributed the state's strong performance to political stability, the people's unity, and policies implemented by the Sarawak government, which have begun yielding encouraging results. Against the setting of Malaysia's GDP growth forecast of 4.4 to 5.5 per cent, Abang Johari said Sarawak's performance continues to be guided by the Post-Covid-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030, launched in July 2021 to transform Sarawak from a traditional economy to a new economy, centred on green growth policies. He expressed optimism that the implementation of PCDS 2030 would enable Sarawak to achieve developed and high-income status by 2030, while also ensuring social inclusion and environmental sustainability. 'The almost threefold increase in state revenue, from around RM5 billion eight years ago to RM15 billion last year, gives us the confidence that we can achieve the PCDS 2030 goals,' he said. Abang Johari's speech text was read by his deputy Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas during the 'Religious and Other Religions Thanksgiving Ceremony', held in conjunction with the state-level official birthday celebration of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong at Limbang Civic Hall today. Also present were State Minister of Education, Innovation and Talent Development and minister-in-charge of the celebration, Dato Dri Roland Sagah Wee Inn; State Deputy Minister of Tourism, Creative Industries and Arts Performance Sarawak Datuk Sebastian Ting Chiew Yew; and Sarawak Police Commissioner Dato Mancha Ata. Meanwhile, a total of RM475 million in aid funds has been provided by Other Religious Affairs Unit (Unifor) to houses of worship, including those of Buddhism, Christianity, Taoism, Baha'i, Sikh, and Hinduism, based on the principle of social inclusivity. These funds are meant for their construction projects, repairs, renovations, maintenance, and purchase of equipment and religious tools. 'In addition, Unifor has also provided a total of RM90 million to missionary schools in Sarawak since 2021. This means that RM565 million has been allocated to Unifor by the Sarawak government,' added Abang Johari. Commenting on the event, he said it provides an opportunity for Sarawakians to witness the uniqueness of their culture. 'We are the only region in Malaysia that organises such thanksgiving ceremony as an annual event, held in conjunction with Sarawak's flagship celebrations such as today's event. 'This ceremony reflects the nature of tolerance, inclusiveness, respect, and understanding among our people who come from various religions and beliefs, yet are united in giving thanks and offering prayers for the wellbeing of His Majesty and the Queen,' he said. abang johari economic growth GDP

State govt plans to expedite construction for two projects in Selangau

SELANGAU (June 11): The state government aims to have the construction of SMK Selangau as well as a new road to Selangau bazaar to be completed earlier than scheduled, said Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas. He said this was to speed up the delivery of facilities to the people and ensure the two projects are not only completed according to specifications but also ahead of schedule. 'We are very happy to see the progress of the projects which seems to be going well according to the original schedule. The road was originally scheduled for completion in 12 months. 'However, we have asked the contractor to complete it within six months as we see the good weather factor and that the work is not that difficult,' he told reporters after visiting the road project site here yesterday. According to Uggah, who is Minister of Infrastructure and Port Development, the road measuring about 450 metres and costing RM3.5 million will provide easy access to the bazaar as well as help stimulate the local economy. On the SMK Selangau project, Uggah said the project, which is funded by the federal government, is also progressing well, moving at about five per cent ahead of schedule. 'This project involves the construction of 18 classrooms at a cost of RM81 million and is expected to be completed by June 2027. However, we also asked for the Public Works Department (JKR) and the contractor to work out the work plan to complete it by December 2026. 'The project is sited on a good location — it is not sited on peat soil or hilly area, and the construction is also using Industrialised Building System. We do not see any reason why they cannot do it any faster,' he said. He said that JKR would monitor the progress of all projects extensively to ensure there are no delayed or sick projects. Uggah also said the state government would not hesitate to terminate the contract of any project that fails to be completed according to schedule. 'All projects that have been approved by our Premier must be implemented according to schedule. That is his hope. The people also expect that when a project is announced, it will be built and completed as scheduled,' he said. New Selangau road, school to be completed ahead of schedule

SIBU: The construction of a new road to Selangau town and SMK Selangau is targeted for earlier completion, to expedite the delivery of facilities to the people, says Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas. He said the state government aimed to ensure that both projects not only met specifications but were also completed ahead of the stipulated timeframe. 'This road, which provides new access to Selangau town, is supposed to be completed within 12 months, but we have asked for it to be finished within six months. 'The weather conditions are also good, and the work is not too difficult. I hope the Public Works Department (JKR) will continue to monitor the progress of this project comprehensively,' he told reporters after visiting the project site today. According to him, the 450-metre road construction project, valued at RM3.5 million, is fully funded by the state government. It will provide direct access to Selangau town without the need for a long detour from the Pan Borneo Highway, thereby improving traffic flow and benefiting local residents. Uggah, who is also Sarawak Minister of Infrastructure and Port Development, also inspected the construction project for SMK Selangau, which is currently 4.34 per cent ahead of its original schedule. 'This school involves the construction of 18 classrooms with a cost of RM81.008 million. According to the original schedule, it should be completed by June 2027, but we have asked JKR and the contractor to complete it by December 2026 at the latest,' he said. Uggah added that the project was funded by the Federal Government and implemented by the State Government. He expressed confidence that it could be completed on schedule due to stable site conditions and the use of the Industrialised Building System (IBS) method. He further stated that JKR Sarawak would continue to monitor the implementation of both projects to ensure no delays occurred. 'The state government will also not hesitate to terminate the contracts of any project that fails to be completed according to plan, as has been done before,' he stressed.
