Video: Germany-Bound Boeing 757 Catches Fire Mid-Air, Diverted To Italy

New Delhi: Around 300 people on board a Boeing 757-300 had a near-death experience Saturday night when the plane's right engine caught fire shortly after taking off from Corfu in Greece. The plane, operated by German budget carrier Condor and bound for Dusseldorf, with 273 passengers and eight crew, made an emergency landing at the town of Brindisi in Italy an hour after it left Corfu. A terrifying video of the fire breaking out mid-air has been widely shared online. One 18-second clip is particularly scary; it shows sparks from the right fuselage, resembling the flicker of flame when trying to light a cigarette lighter. This continues for 15 seconds. A second video, posted by aviation news X handle FL360aero, shows the plane flying through what seems to be a flock of birds. In the comment the handle said the aircraft made an emergency landing in southern Italy due to 'engine failure caused by suspected bird strike'. Forty-three minutes later the plane landed at Casale Airport in Brindisi. News reports said the pilot shut down the faulty engine and tried to return to Corfu, before deciding to continue with only the other one still operational. Eventually it landed in Brindisi. Condor has apolgised for any inconvenience to passengers, who had to spend the night at the airport because of the lack of hotels in the town. They were flown to Dusseldorf the next day. The Boeing 757 is one of the oldest-serving passenger plane models - and nicknamed 'Atari Ferrari' - in the world and is now in its fifth decade of active service. This isn't the first time a Boeing plane has caught fire mid-air. Last month a Los Angeles-Atalanta flight operated by United States airline Delta had to return after the left engine erupts into flames. And on June 12 a London-bound Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner operated by Air India crashed seconds after taking off from Ahmedabad. All but one of the 272 people on board died, as did 19 others on the ground after the plane, which lost altitutde suddenly, crashed into a hostel. Investigations into the reason for the crash are ongoing, with initial reports flagging movement of the fuel supply control switches from the 'RUN' to the 'CUTOFF' positions.

Man reveals food culture clash in Netherlands, stuns Indians online: ‘This is just so surreal'

An Indian-origin man who grew up in the Netherlands opened up about a cultural shock he experienced in childhood. Speaking in a street interview for Instagram account Dating Beyond Borders, he explained that while his parents moved to the Netherlands from India, he was raised there. The man shared a childhood memory that highlighted the cultural difference between India and the Netherlands.(Instagram/datingbeyondborders) When asked which parts of his personality were more 'Indian,' he pointed to food culture. 'Even if someone is coming to fix the tap, you will give them a meal, you will give them tea. Dutch culture does not have that. You wouldn't necessarily invite someone for dinner,' he said. He then shared a childhood memory that highlighted this cultural difference. During a barbecue at a neighbour's house, he was invited over to play. 'When my parents came to pick me up they asked me how it was. I said that it was fun but I did not get any of the meat as they said that it was only for adults,' he recalled. He added that although he asked for some of the barbecued meat, he was told it was finished—even though he saw the leftovers being stored in the fridge. When his mother asked the neighbours about it, they explained the food was being saved for their next day's meal. 'My mom was like, wow that's some broke a* s**t,'* he said with a laugh. However, he clarified that not all Dutch people behaved this way, adding that many of his Dutch friends were shocked when they heard the story. The story stunned viewers online, especially Indians, who shared their thoughts in the comments. "I lived modestly, as did all my friends growing up, but parents would never allow their kids' friends to leave the house hungry... This is just so surreal," said one of them. Another added, "In India, even the poorest family would feed their children first, even before others, if they suddenly show up during meal time."

(Unsplash/Rishabh Pandoh) What happened at the Ranthambore National Park? According to a report by NDTV, the canter carrying tourists, including children, broke down during the safari. The tourists alleged that the guide left, saying he would look for another canter. However, he misbehaved with the tourists before going and never returned. The group was left in the dark, with only mobile phone lights to assist them in a national park that houses over 60 tigers. The area also houses a large number of mammals, reptiles, and bird species. According to the park's official website, it has a 'rich population of leopards, sloth bears, marsh crocodiles, palm civets, jackals, desert foxes, Banded Kraits, Cobras, Common Kraits, and pythons,' among other animals. Purported videos of the incident surfaced, showing children crying while sitting in the dark waiting to return to safety. The video brought the matter to light. Following this incident, the authorities immediately launched a probe into the matter. Deputy Conservator of Forests (dcf) Pramod Dhakad told PTI that three canter drivers and the guide were barred from entering the park until the probe was completed. "Those restricted include canter drivers Kanhaiya, Shehzad Choudhary and Liaqat Ali, along with guide Mukesh Kumar Bairwa," Dhakad said. Assistant Conservator of Forests Ashwini Pratap is assigned to conduct a detailed inquiry into the matter. The tourists were left alone and stuck in the park for nearly one and a half hours, from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Eventually, they were rescued unharmed. (With inputs from PTI)
