Jack Draper Leads British Tennis Charge at Wimbledon 2025

The Sun6 hours ago
HOST nation Britain is hungry for its next big tennis star to emerge at Wimbledon after two-time champion Andy Murray's retirement last year, with Jack Draper leading a new generation of home men's players.
British fans endured 77 years without a male player lifting the title, after Fred Perry's third win in 1936.
First came 'Henmania', then 'Murray Madness', before the Scot ended the wait with the first of his two Wimbledon triumphs in 2013.
Now, a surging new generation of British players are making their mark, with fourth seed Draper, 23, leading the pack following Murray's farewell in 2024.
Seven men including Draper, Dan Evans, Jack Pinnington Jones and amateur Oliver Tarvet all made it into this year's second round -- Britain's best tally at any Grand Slam event since 1997.
The strong showing has set the home crowd up for some exciting tennis on Thursday with Evans due to face seven-time champion Novak Djokovic while Draper will play Croatia's Marin Cilic.
'Brilliant, brilliant, brilliant!' said chartered physiotherapist Carol Sweet. 'Seven into the second round is amazing.'
Centre court erupted Wednesday as Tarvet hit a string of winners before he was knocked out by reigning champion Carlos Alcaraz.
'It's great, you can hear the noise and how much louder it is,' said engineer Cameron Maxwell, 27 as the crowd roared in support.
'As a spectator you're just more revved up for it,' added accountant Guy Millward, 59.
Results, at last
Long-time British tennis fans John and Sarah Pickthorn said it was encouraging to see so many UK players finally making progress after years when they were few and far between.
'For a very long time we've been here watching Germans and Swedes and Americans and Australians and it is very nice to see that we can produce -- not just one player -- Andy Murray,' added John, a retired banker.
Money pumped into the sport by the the Lawn Tennis Association, British tennis's governing body, was 'at last starting to show results', he said.
'It gives you that extra bit of excitement when they do go through,' his wife Sarah, a retired interior designer, added.
Draper has been keen to dampen down expectations although he says British tennis is currently 'in a good spot', partly due to Murray's influence.
'Andy has had a huge effect on a lot of the younger generation, watching his success over the years, major success on the big stage.
'It's really exciting what we're going to have in the next 10 years.... It's cool to be a part of that,' he said this week.
Prominent tennis figures predict big things for the well-rounded Londoner who studied criminology, enjoys whizzing up a cocktail and has even turned his hand to modelling.
'I'll be surprised if he doesn't win multiple majors,' John McEnroe said last month at the French Open.
'Next tennis superstar'
Former mixed doubles champion Jamie Murray, who is also Andy Murray's brother, is even more certain.
'He is Britain's next tennis superstar. There's no ifs or buts about that.'
Home-grown winners have been in short supply since Perry enjoyed three consecutive wins between 1934-36 at the All England Club in southwest London.
It was another six decades before Tim Henman burst onto the scene in the 1990s and provided some long-awaited buzz.
His four semi-final appearances sparked 'Henmania' among British fans but the title ultimately eluded him.
Murray finally managed to follow in Perry's footsteps, a year after losing in the final to Roger Federer.
For now Draper is keeping his feet on the ground.
'I'm not trying to be the next Andy Murray,' he told The Times in January.
'He's one of the greatest players there ever was and ever will be, and to put that level of pressure on myself, I just don't do it. I focus on achieving my own potential,' he added.

Tennis-Murray's autographed shirt from 2013 Wimbledon final up for auction

FILE PHOTO: Andy Murray of Britain kisses the winners trophy after defeating Novak Djokovic of Serbia (R) in their men's singles final tennis match at the Wimbledon Tennis Championships, in London July 7, 2013. REUTERS/Anja Niedringhaus/Pool/File Photo LONDON (Reuters) -Andy Murray's match-worn shirt from his historic 2013 Wimbledon triumph could soon adorn the wall of a lucky fan's home, for the right price, after it was put up for auction along with other pieces of sporting memorabilia from the tournament. Murray, 38, claimed two of his three Grand Slam titles at Wimbledon and ended Britain's 77-year wait for a men's singles champion at the grasscourt Grand Slam in 2013 when he defeated Novak Djokovic in straight sets in the final. One of the three Adidas shirts the Scot wore in that match is up for grabs in an online sale held by Graham Budd Auctions in partnership with Golden Age of Tennis, with the auction set to conclude on July 13. Murray's shirt, signed by the player and authenticated by Wimbledon's head groundsman, is expected to fetch up to 8,000 pounds ($10,928), while his baseball cap from the same match could attract bids close to 3,500 pounds. "There's no better time than Wimbledon weeks to celebrate tennis history," David Convery, the head of sporting memorabilia at Graham Budd Auctions, said in a statement. "This auction features truly iconic pieces ... each item a powerful link to the sport's greatest moments." Fans can also pick up the net that was used in the 2010 epic featuring John Isner and Nicolas Mahut, the longest professional tennis match in history that lasted 11 hours and five minutes and took place over three days. The net cord is autographed by Isner and Mahut. Autographed Wimbledon tennis balls with the signatures of Rafa Nadal, Roger Federer, Djokovic and Murray are also on offer for between 300-500 pounds. British and Irish Lions call up former England captain Owen Farrell

SYDNEY: Owen Farrell received a shock British and Irish Lions call up Thursday after utility back Elliot Daly was ruled out of their Australia tour, with his father, head coach Andy Farrell, citing experience in defending the decision. The 33-year-old former England captain, a three-time Lions tourist, earned the last of his 112 Test caps at the 2023 World Cup and has not played any rugby for nearly nine weeks after suffering a concussion. But the fly-half is a proven international performer and his father said the call-up was justified. "When you look at the experience that Elliot's had, I mean the experience isn't just the playing side, it's how you make the group feel, the little chats that you have around the place to make sure that everything's gelled together," he said. "And obviously Owen would bring a lot of that into the group." While Finn Russell is the clear favourite to start the three-Test series against the Wallabies at fly-half, Farrell can also operate in the centre and has a trusty boot for goal-kicking. But his call-up is a surprise with the Lions having plenty of options in the backs and the likes of Scotland's Tom Jordan and Wales' Blair Murray also seen as in the running as replacements. "Well, he's fit otherwise he wouldn't be picked," said Farrell when asked about his son's lack of recent rugby after an injury-plagued season with Racing 92. "I know that the guys have been keeping in close touch with him ... and he's been training full ball for quite some time now. "If he didn't have a chance (of playing), then what's the point," he added. "Everyone should be competing. "That's what everyone in the group would want but along with that the experience brings the support that you need for the group, and again, how you make the room feel." The versatile Daly, a 72-Test England veteran, was forced off during the second half of the Lions' 52-12 victory over Queensland Reds on Wednesday, with X-rays revealing a fractured forearm. "It's disappointing for all of us, he's an unbelievably popular bloke amongst the group," said Farrell. "So very sad." It is their second injury setback since arriving in Australia for their nine-match tour on June 22. Experienced Welsh scrum-half Tomos Williams pulled a hamstring during their opening clash with Western Force and is also out of the tour, with Scotland's Ben White joining the squad as replacement. The first Test is on July 19 in Brisbane, with three more warm-up games before that, starting in Sydney on Saturday against the NSW Waratahs. Ireland's Tadhg Beirne was appointed skipper for the match, with tour captain Maro Itoje given the night off. He is joined in the second row by James Ryan. Pierre Schoeman, Luke Cowan-Dickie and Finlay Bealham pack down in the front row while Henry Pollock, Josh van der Flier and Ben Earl fill out the backrow. English pair Alex Mitchell and Fin Smith start at scrum-half and fly-half respectively, with Scottish duo Sione Tuipulotu and Huw Jones in the centres. Hugo Keenan and Blair Kinghorn make their Lions debuts and are joined in the back three by Mack Hansen. British and Irish Lions (15-1): Hugo Keenan; Mack Hansen, Huw Jones, Sione Tuipulotu, Blair Kinghorn; Fin Smith, Alex Mitchell; Ben Earl, Josh van der Flier, Henry Pollock; James Ryan, Tadhg Beirne (capt); Finlay Bealham, Luke Cowan-Dickie, Pierre Schoeman

Sabalenka praying for no more Wimbledon upsets after battling win

Aryna Sabalenka is a three-time Grand Slam champion but has never gone beyond the Wimbledon semi-finals. (AP pic) LONDON : World No 1 Aryna Sabalenka said she hopes there are 'no more upsets' at Wimbledon after reaching the third round with a hard-fought 7-6(7/4), 6-4 win over Marie Bouzkova today. Several stars suffered shock first round exits from the All England Club, including second seed Coco Gauff, third seed Jessica Pegula and fifth seed Zheng Qinwen. Top seed Sabalenka was pushed hard by Bouzkova in today's opening match on Centre Court as her Czech opponent matched fire with fire in a bruising encounter. But she eventually had too much in her locker for her 48th-ranked opponent, firing an impressive 41 winners in a match lasting 1 hour and 35 minutes. The Belarusian said after her win she was aware of the seeds who had crashed out but planned to focus on her own game. 'Honestly it's very sad to see so many top players losing in the first round but you better focus on yourself and stay away from the results,' she said. 'I mean of course you're going to know the overall picture but it's better to take it one step at a time and do your best every time you're out here competing and I'm trying to stay away. 'I hope it's no upsets anymore in this tournament, if you know what I mean!' The first set went with serve until Sabalenka doubled-faulted in the 11th game to hand Bouzkova the chance to serve for the set. But the Belarusian broke back with a searing backhand down the line and came out on top in the tie-break to establish a foothold in the match. Sabalenka broke again in the fifth game of the second set to move within sight of victory and closed out the match with little fuss. She will face 2021 US Open winner Emma Raducanu or former Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova in the third round on Friday. Although Sabalenka is a three-time Grand Slam champion, she has suffered agonising three-set defeats in this year's Australian Open and French Open finals. The 27-year-old has never been beyond the Wimbledon semi-finals and missed last year's tournament with a shoulder injury.
