NA panel suggests free Cambridge resits
The recommendation came following a meeting between the subcommittee and Cambridge International Education on Monday, where Cambridge officials shared additional details about their internal investigation into the leak of three exam papers in Pakistan.
After reviewing Cambridge's findings, the subcommittee issued a statement, stating that affected students should be allowed a free retake, should they choose to sit the exam again.
The committee noted that students must be given this right to safeguard both their confidence and academic future.
Earlier, Cambridge had proposed awarding full marks for the compromised questions as a remedial measure, an approach that intended to benefit a majority of candidates.
However, the parliamentary panel maintained that students who remain concerned or wish to improve their performance should be granted an opportunity to resit the exams. The committee acknowledged that Cambridge's investigation was transparent and credible, but called for a solution that ensures fairness and reassurance for all students.
"While the full marks policy will benefit most students, those who feel anxious or want to improve their results should also have the option of a free resit," the committee stated.
Country Director of Cambridge Assessment International Education Uzma Yousuf welcomed the move, saying that the organisation was committed to upholding global educational standards for Pakistani students.
"Our mission is to prepare students across Pakistan to meet international academic standards. We were pleased to clarify our processes in today's meeting with the subcommittee," she said.

Military spokesperson Director General Inter-Services Public Relations (DG ISPR) Lt Gen Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry on Thursday refuted media reports attributing apology remarks to Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Field Marshal Asim Munir. Speaking to journalists in Islamabad, the DG ISPR said that journalist Sohail Warraich's article was based on an event held in Brussels, where hundreds of people took pictures with the field marshal but no interview was given by the Army Chief. He clarified that there was no mention of PTI or any apology at the event, adding that it was the journalist's own work for personal gain and publicity. DG ISPR further said the senior journalist had shown irresponsibility for personal gain and a publicity stunt, as the field marshal gave no interview during his Brussels visit. However, he reiterated that the perpetrators of the May 9 riots would have to face the law. To a question of a legal action against the media organization for relaying misleading reports, the DG ISPR noted, "We have said it explicitly that the institutions should show responsibility and avoid reporting inappropriate information." Pakistan is a country that has a potential to change the fate of the region, which is why it is attacked frequently, the ISPR DG asserted, adding the youth should understand the legacy and history of their ideological state. Ahmed Chaudhry said that the Indian designs of discrediting Pak Army through terrorist proxies and other facilitators have been foiled by Pak Army's befitting response. They were wrong in believing that they could defeat Pakistan through their multi-billion military might. On the ground, Pakistan defeated both India and its proxies - Fitna al-Khawarij and Fitna al-Hindustan -simultaneously. The DG ISPR further highlighted that the decision taken by all political parties in 2014 to stamp out terrorism from Pakistan has not been fully implemented till date. He pointed out that whenever illegal Afghans involved in crimes were expelled, some political and criminal elements within the country start creating fuss. The military spokesperson said the army, police and law enforcement agencies are bridging the governance gap with their blood on a daily basis, adding, "Pakistani youth are our asset."

China eyes agricultural, mining cooperation with Pakistan, foreign minister says
BEIJING: China is willing to cooperate with Pakistan in industry, agriculture and mining, Foreign Minister Wang Yi told Pakistani counterpart Ishaq Dar in Islamabad on Thursday, according to a readout of the meeting released by Wang's ministry. Beijing would continue to support Pakistan in safeguarding its national independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity and combating terrorism, Wang told Dar, adding that China would continue to give priority to Pakistan in its regional diplomacy. Both countries should join hands to safeguard the multilateral trading system and oppose unilateral bullying, and upgrade the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, he said. Wang, on a five-day tour of South Asia, has visited India and Afghanistan, mending and consolidating ties with China's neighbours to the south days before a leaders' summit in China for the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation, a 10-nation Eurasian security and political grouping whose members include China, Russia, India, Pakistan, and Iran. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will travel to China - his first visit in seven years - to attend the summit. At a press briefing on Thursday, Wang also welcomed Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to attend both the summit and activities to mark the formal surrender of Japan at the end of World War Two, which will feature a massive military parade in Beijing. Russian President Vladimir Putin is expected to attend the parade in the Chinese capital on September 3. During Thursday's meeting with Dar, Wang again urged Pakistan to 'effectively safeguard the safety of Chinese personnel, projects and organisations in Pakistan'. Over the years China has poured billions of dollars into infrastructure projects in Pakistan under the Belt and Road Initiative. But security concerns have mounted, with Chinese workers repeatedly targeted in what Beijing has called terrorist attacks in the South Asian nation. 'China appreciates Pakistan's unremitting efforts and great sacrifices made in combating terrorism,' Wang said, according to a Chinese ministry statement.

Pakistani rupee registers 10th successive gain against US dollar
The Pakistani rupee maintained its upward trend against the US dollar, with marginal appreciation of 0.01% in the inter-bank market on Thursday. At close, the rupee settled at 281.92, a gain of Re0.03 against the greenback. This was rupee's tenth successive gain against the greenback. On Wednesday, the local unit had closed the session at 281.95. The rupee has maintained a positive trajectory against the greenback in recent days on account of improved sentiment in the currency market amid an ongoing crackdown by law enforcement agencies against illegal currency dealers and smugglers. Internationally, the US dollar drifted on Thursday as investors fretted about the Federal Reserve's independence after yet another attack from President Donald Trump ahead of remarks from Chair Jerome Powell later this week that could influence the outlook for rates. Trump called on Fed Governor Lisa Cook to resign on the basis of allegations made by one of his political allies about mortgages she holds in Michigan and Georgia, intensifying his effort to gain influence over the US central bank. The Japanese yen held onto gains made in previous sessions and was little changed at 147.41 per dollar, while the euro was steady at $1.1642. Sterling last fetched $1.34535. That left the dollar index, which measures the US currency against six other peers, steady at 98.301. Trump has repeatedly criticised Powell for being too slow to cut rates, stoking investor worries about the central bank's independence and its credibility. Oil prices, a key indicator of currency parity, extended gains on Thursday, bolstered by signs of strong demand in the US, with uncertainty over efforts to end the war in Ukraine also lending support.
