Indian Express5 days ago
The officials of the under-construction Noida airport Monday said over 90 per cent of the work at the airport has been finished and the remaining tasks will likely be completed by September 30.
Speaking to The Indian Express, Rakesh Kumar Singh, newly appointed Chief Executive Officer, Noida International Airport Limited (Nial), said while most of the mandatory licences for airport operations have already been secured, two are still pending.
'We expect to receive the remaining licenses during this period. A site review will be conducted this week to evaluate the outstanding work, which will then be addressed at the earliest,' the official added.
Highlighting the complexity of the project, the Nial CEO said, 'This is an international airport and the standards we have to meet are much higher. Each section of the airport has its own specific timeline and challenges.'
When asked whether a specific inauguration or operational date had been finalised, Singh said, 'As of now, there is no specific date. We are focused on completing the pending work, and once that is done, we will be in a position to announce the official launch.'
He said that significant progress has been made regarding key infrastructure like the terminal building and runways. 'We have completed approximately 85 per cent of the terminal building. Work is ongoing across multiple zones, and the overall progress has crossed the 90 per cent mark,' he added.
On Saturday, Uttar Pradesh's Industrial Development Minister Nand Gopal Gupta had said that Noida International Airport in Uttar Pradesh's Jewar – which has missed several deadlines since its foundation stone was laid in November 2021 – will be completed by November this year.
The airport missed its first opening deadline on September 29, 2024, which was later pushed to April of this year. Following this, June 30 was announced as the new date for the start of operations.

New RE policy to attract Rs 1.5 lakh cr investment, generate jobs: Bihar Energy Secy

Bihar's new renewable energy policy has the potential not only to attract investments worth Rs 1.5 lakh crore but also generate huge employment opportunities across the state, Bihar's Energy Secretary Manoj Kumar Singh said. Launched earlier this week, the policy for 'Promotion of Bihar New and Renewable Energy Sources 2025' aims to harness 23.96 gigawatt (GW) of renewable energy and 6.1 GW of storage by FY 2029-30 through non-conventional sources and energy storage potential of the state. Other key objectives of the policy are promoting new and efficient techniques for development of RE and storage projects, increasing awareness for RE integration, and maximizing stakeholder participation for RE development among others. Sharing his views with PTI, the secretary said, "This is one of the most progressive policies in the country. Bihar will not only lead in the clean energy sphere but also make significant contributions to India's commitment towards Net Zero. Besides becoming one of the most attractive investment destinations, it will generate huge employment opportunities as the next renewable hub of the country." Singh said Bihar is offering one of the most attractive policy regimes in the country and assures investors of policy support which will help them with good returns for their investments in the state. Live Events When asked about the expected investments and job opportunities, the official said the policy has potential to attract investments of "Rs 1,50,000 crore and generate 1,25,000 jobs." Replying to another question on the benefits for investors, the secretary said the policy introduces a highly competitive suite of incentives designed to attract investors and developers from across the country. These include a streamlined single-window clearance system to fast-track project approvals and comprehensive financial benefits such as 100 per cent reimbursement of SGST, land conversion fees, and stamp duty on lease or transfer of land. The policy also grants a 100 per cent waiver on electricity duty for 15 years and provides long-term open access for 25 years along with full exemption from transmission and wheeling charges. State utilities will bear the cost of transmission and distribution infrastructure up to 10 kilometers, with shared responsibility beyond that point. "I urge national and international investors to invest in the state and avail the benefits of the policy. The entire policy is in the public domain. The government will fully support the investors to address their concerns," he added. PTI Economic Times WhatsApp channel )

BA (Hons) Statistics vs BSc Data Science: Who should choose? Career prospects and more

('The Right Choice' is a series by The Indian Express that addresses common questions, misconceptions, and doubts surrounding undergraduate admissions. You can read the stories here) — Prof. Pushkar Shah With data powering decisions across industries, from finance and healthcare to e-commerce and public policy, students often struggle with choosing Statistics or Data Science. While both speak the language of numbers, they approach the problem with different purposes. A BA in Statistics will offer a strong mathematical foundation with a focus on probability, inference, mathematical modelling, and hypothesis testing. It requires rigorous training and analytical skills. Graduates often pursue master's and doctorates and go on to pick up roles in think tanks, government services, public policy, market research, and academia. These also lead to advanced careers in economics and quantitative fields. BA (Hons) Economics vs BCom (Hons): Which degree will offer a gateway to business & policy? In contrast, a in Data Sciences blends statistics with programming. The emphasis is on coding, data wrangling, machine learning, and visualisation. Students essentially learn how to handle large, real-world data, and apply models to solve business problems – skills which are highly valued by startups, tech firms, consulting, and digital-first companies. Though both these streams deal with numbers, the career prospects follow different trajectories. Headhunters looking for model builders in research or forecasting often look out for statistics graduates. Whereas, data science roles such as data engineers, data scientists, business analysts, etc., demand more coding fluency and an applied mindset. BA Maths (Hons), BCom Maths (Hons) or BSc Maths (Hons): Which one should you choose? In India, the recent emphasis on developing newer technologies and applied services has raised the demand for both streams. Traditional sectors such as banking, insurance, and government look out for statistics graduates. The surge in digital transformation and the use of AI and GenAI in mainstream industry has driven the demand for data science talent across upcoming tech corridors. If you enjoy mathematical logic, abstract thinking, and are just curious to identify patterns in data at a basal level, then statistics is your path. If you enjoy being a trouble shooter, using code, and building data solutions, then data science is a more natural fit. BA (Hons) History or BA (Hons) Political Science: Which one should a student choose Ultimately, both will lead to the same destination, using data to make sense of how the world around you works. What matters is where you'd like to begin. (The author is an Associate Professor of Practice, Analytics at Great Lakes Institute of Management, Chennai)
