Security up at 3 places in Ganjam after man crushed under chariot wheels

Berhampur: A day after a 32-year-old man was allegedly crushed to death under the wheels of a chariot at Sikula in Ganjam district, security has been tightened in places where Rath Yatra was held on Saturday.
Chariots are pulled by devotees in Digapahandi, Dharakote and Surangi, a day after Puri. Hundreds of people from nearby villages pulled the chariot in Digapahandi and Dharakote, while several people from neighbouring Andhra Pradesh and tribals thronged Surangi in Patrapur block to participate in the festival.
Siba Behera of Sikula died after the chariot allegedly ran over him on Friday. He was rushed to MKCG Medical College and Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries late evening, police said.
"We are investigating the incident," said Deepak Mishra, sub-divisional police officer (SDPO), Purushottampur.
"Following the accident, we have asked police officers to keep strict vigil on chariot pulling in their areas," said SP (Berhampur) Saravana Vivek M. He said adequate forces were also deployed in Surangi and Digapahandi to ensure incident-free Rath Yatra.
"Ever since the Jagannath Temple was built in Surangi, located near the Andhra Pradesh border, by the then king in the 18th century, the pulling of chariot was done a day after Puri Rath Yatra," said Anchal Pradhan, an elderly resident.
Similar tradition continues in Dharakote and Digapahandi. "Bahuda Yatra will also be observed in these places a day after the traditional return car festival. It's our tradition since the temple was established," said Kuresh Patra, an advocate in Digapahandi.
According to legends, everyone went to participate in the Rath Yatra in nearby places, including Jarada and Chikiti, leaving behind hardly any devotee to pull chariots in Digapahandi, Dharakote and Surangi. This propmpted the kings to postpone the pulling of chariots for a day.
Rath Yatra was celebrated in Jarada on Friday, where Lord Jagannath is worshipped as Lord Parthasarathi.

Threatening graffiti found near Jagannath Temple, Puri Police on high alert
Bhubaneswar: The Puri Police are on their toes after graffiti threatening an attack on the famous Jagannath Temple at the sacred coastal town was spotted on the walls of a small temple near the 12th-century shrine on Wednesday. An unknown person has written 'Terrorist will destroy the Temple' in Odia language on two locations of the wall of Budhi Maa Thakurani temple, located on the southern side of the temple near Balisahi entrance of the Puri Parikrama Prakalpa marg (Heritage Corridor) in the holy coastal town. The graffiti also contained the name of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and some unverified phone numbers. Speaking to media persons, Pinak Mishra, DIG-Cum- Superintendent of Police, Puri said that efforts are on to identify and nab the accused person. "It was found that some objectionable posts have been written regarding the Jagannath Temple. We have taken cognisance of this incident. Our special team has already started an investigation to ascertain when and who wrote this. We have been taking the issue seriously as it is related to the security of Jagannath Temple," said Puri SP. Mishra also stated that police have been examining the CCTV footage of the temple and surrounding areas to identify the accused person. He also informed the media persons that the police team investigating the issue has already got some clues on the matter. The Puri SP noted that everything will be cleared on the issue after the identification and apprehension of the accused person. The police suspect that the graffiti was written on Tuesday night. Meanwhile, some locals claimed that a mentally unstable person was spotted earlier scribbling random matters in the locality during the past couple of days. It is pertinent to mention that pilgrims, senior servitors and locals had raised serious objections last month over security lapses at the Puri Jagannath Temple after some unknown persons were seen entering the 12th-century shrine, scaling the Meghanada Pacheri, the outer boundary wall of the temple, during the Rath Yatra festival.

2 rape minor in front of sister, held
Daltonganj: Two men were arrested for allegedly abducting and raping a minor girl from outside Daltonganj railway station here late on Monday night. The survivor, along with her sister, were heading to the station to board a train to Punjab to visit their parents when they were approached by two men who falsely claimed that they are police officers. They demanded the girls' personal details, their names and addresses and said they needed to be interrogated. The men then took the sisters on motorcycles to a secluded area in the Chainpur area, where the elder sister was allegedly gang raped. The younger sister was threatened to remain silent. Following the assault, the accused attempted to transport the girls towards Medininagar. The younger sister bravely jumped off the bike near Sadiq Manzil Chowk and cried for help. Her screams alerted nearby residents, who quickly informed the police. Responding promptly, the police cordoned off the area and arrested the two accused. SDPO sadar Mani Bhushan Prasad on Tuesday said the accused have been booked under section 70 of BNSS and section 6 of the POCSO Act .
