Sarawak to allocate RM600mil for free education in 2026
Sarawak Education, Innovation and Talent Development Deputy Minister Datuk Dr Annuar Rapaee said the initiative would only apply to students at four state government-owned universities involving 64 courses.
"Although Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg never promised free tertiary education in any election, it will still be provided out of care and in the educational interest of Sarawak youth," he said during his speech at the central zone Sarawak Women's, Children and Community Welfare Development Ministry outreach programme here on Sunday (Aug 10), which was officiated by its minister, Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah.
The four universities are Universiti Teknologi Sarawak, Universiti Curtin Malaysia, Sarawak Swinburne University and I-Cats University College. – Bernama

Sarawak seeks Mardi's help to boost rice production
KUCHING: Sarawak is seeking assistance from the Malaysian Agricultural Research and Development Institute (Mardi) for the supply of rice seeds to boost production, according to Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg. The state aims to expand its padi planting areas to become one of the country's top rice producers. Sarawak plans to plant 14,000 hectares of padi, projected to produce 240,000 tonnes of rice to achieve self-sufficiency. "If Mardi can assist Sarawak by providing more seeds, we will be able to expand our padi planting areas. If we can plant an additional 14,000 hectares, we will be able to produce about 500,000 tonnes of rice," he said during the opening of the National Padi Conference on Tuesday (Aug 12) night. Abang Johari noted that any excess rice produced by Sarawak could be shared with the rest of Malaysia, reducing the nation's dependence on rice imports. He also mentioned that Sarawak would collaborate with Mardi and other agencies on rice research to improve yield per hectare. A study by Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) in Gedong increased rice yield from 1.2 tonnes per hectare to eight tonnes per hectare using new seeds and methods, including the Internet of Things (IoT) and machinery. "The study found that rice could be harvested five times in 24 months. I believe this can succeed in other padi planting areas and increase farmers' income," he added. Boosting padi production is part of Sarawak's post-Covid development strategy to ensure food security for the state and nation. "We need to develop the agriculture sector with new technologies. Ultimately, we want to become a net food exporter," Abang Johari said. Earlier, Deputy Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Arthur Joseph Kurup highlighted Sarawak's potential in padi production. He said increasing Sarawak's self-sufficiency in rice is crucial for both state needs and national food security. To support these efforts, the ministry has allocated RM230 million for the padi industry in Sarawak, including developing new rice planting areas in Tanjung Bijat, Stumbin, Gran, Entulang, and Seduku under the 11th Malaysia Plan.

Sarawak to establish energy council by next year, says Abang Jo
Premier Abang Johari Openg said Sarawak is targeting RM700 billion in investments over the next decade through the Sarawak Energy Transition Policy. PETALING JAYA : Sarawak will establish a state energy council by next year to coordinate and align energy sector policies across public and private stakeholders, says its premier, Abang Johari Openg. Abang Johari said the council, to be formed after consultations with all relevant parties, will oversee the operations and strategies of energy sector players to ensure alignment with the state's development goals. 'This is part of our broader effort under the Sarawak Energy Transition Policy (SET-P). We're engaging with the private sector so that both public and private entities move forward together,' Bernama quoted him as saying after launching the policy in Kuching today. Abang Johari said Sarawak is targeting RM700 billion in investments over the next decade through the policy, which aims to drive low-carbon, sustainable economic growth anchored on renewable energy. 'We are fortunate to have the capacity to generate renewable energy and are already seeing strong global interest, especially in our hydroelectric power potential,' he said. Abang Johari said the incoming investments are expected to create high-quality jobs, and the state is preparing for this by offering free tertiary education to build a skilled workforce for the emerging green economy. SET-P outlines a strategic roadmap to transform Sarawak's energy landscape and is anchored on seven key pillars – renewable energy; natural gas; energy efficiency; low-carbon mobility; clean hydrogen; carbon capture, utilisation and storage; and alternative energy.

Hold more interfaith gatherings to foster harmony — Dr Annuar
(From left) Dr Annuar being briefed by Manogaran on the newly-built Sri Mahariamman Temple. SIBU (Aug 11): Religious organisations should hold more interfaith gatherings to further strengthen harmony among people of different beliefs, said Datuk Dr Annuar Rapaee. The state Deputy Minister for Education, Innovation and Talent Development suggested that Sri Maha Mariamman Temple president Manogaran Krishnasamy host an interfaith Deevapali celebration involving about 500 people at the new temple at Jalan Orchid here. 'In Sarawak, religious harmony is well exemplified, particularly in Sibu along Jalan Awang Ramli Amit, where a church, a mosque, and Sikh and Hindu temples coexist, fostering mutual respect among people of various faiths,' said the Nangka assemblyman when met after presenting a Minor Rural Project (MRP) grant to the Sri Maha Mariamman Temple. Adding on, Dr Annuar said such events would encourage people of different religions to visit the temple, enhance mutual understanding, and promote both racial and religious unity. He also noted that other places of worship, such as the Al-Qadim Mosque, had welcomed visitors from various faiths. Prior to the visit, Dr Annuar also presented an MRP grant to Gurdwara Sahib Sibu.
