2200-Mile 1998 BMW 318ti Is Today's Bring a Trailer Find

Yahoo2 days ago
Here's an entry-level BMW from the late 1990s with the right options.
This variant was smaller and lighter than its coupe and sedan siblings.
This one has incredibly low mileage, and its Bring a Trailer online auction goes until July 17.
The least expensive BMWs you can get today, the 2-series or the X1, have MSRPs that hover around the $40,ooo mark. Don't complain too much, though, as, adjusted for inflation, that's what you'd pay for the littlest Bimmer on the lot in 1998, the hatchback version of the 3-series. Then as now, you didn't get a lot of extras unless you were willing to pay, but you did get a true BMW driving experience at a cut-rate price.
This 1998 BMW 318ti has the right boxes ticked and incredibly low mileage. It's up for sale on Bring a Trailer (which, like Car and Driver, is part of Hearst Autos). It has the M Sport package and the five-speed manual, so you get a sportier look and stiffened suspension to go with your heel-and-toe shifting. With just 2200 miles on the odometer, it might be an even better buy than a new bargain BMW.
The idea of a hatchback 3-series seemed a little weird to U.S. shoppers when this car debuted, but not to the European market. The 3-series Compact, as it was known, could trace its roots back to the 2002tii Touring, combining hatchback practicality with that nimble handling and four-cylinder punch that made so many fans of Bavarian-style motoring.
More than eight inches shorter than the 3-series sedan, the U.S.-spec 318ti got a different rear suspension than the standard car, its own unique doors, and its own dashboard styling. To keep the price down, BMW nickel-and-dimed some of the features out (no flashlight in the glovebox, a compact spare tire instead of a full-size one). But if you were buying the 3-series hatchback for the engineering, not the luxury, the good stuff was still right there under the skin.
For one thing, the 318ti was about 130 pounds lighter than the coupe and sedan versions, making it quicker in both stopping and acceleration. It was also a bit more eager to dance, perhaps a little more prone to oversteer than its bigger cousins. Sounds perfect.
The 1.9-liter M44 inline four-cylinder engine fitted to this example made 138 horsepower when new, with 133 pound-feet of torque. For a company whose middle name is literally "Motoren," that output might seem unimpressive, but this is a BMW four-cylinder from a time when you had to wring the engine's neck to get the best experience. No lazy turbocharged torque and upshifting early, the 318ti wants you to mash that throttle.
This example spent time in long-term storage and was sorted out before being auctioned on Bring a Trailer a few years back. Besides the stiffer suspension, the M Sport package added fog lights and some handsome body upgrades, and other options include a sunroof and heated front seats. It's basically in like-new condition, inside and out.
In-period, we gave the nod to the Acura GS-R over this entry-level BMW for the former's rev-happy four-cylinder engine. But looking at this 318ti's happy, ducktail looks and rear-wheel-drive layout, it's not hard to see why a buyer would have chosen the Bimmer instead.
If the current cut-price options at BMW don't stir your soul, then here's a choice pick from the past that just might do the trick. The 318ti might have offered fewer goodies than its bigger sedan or coupe brothers, but it was still a true BMW.
The auction ends July 17.

SPIED: Electric BMW M3 Shows Off More Of Its Unique Take On Performance

The BMW M3 will someday go electric, and if these new spy shots captured at the Nürburgring are anything to go by, that momentous occasion isn't very far away. For the first time, an electric M3 prototype has been captured with its production body, though it still has several deceptive elements pasted on top of it. The development mule in question appears to have been pushed hard, as evidenced by a single brake rotor on the right rear of the car turning blue, like titanium does. The close-up shot was captured while the development mule was being recharged, and we can also see a pale blue light alongside the connector, which all but confirms that most of the production hardware has been finalized. Smaller details like the production lighting units will go on at the last moment. As you'll see in these photos, it was only one drilled brake disc that changed color. Was this the result of binding, an ineffective cooling system, or substandard materials? Perhaps it was one of those elements, all of them, or a combination of just two, but another possibility is that BMW was testing some sort of vehicle dynamics controller that brakes an inside wheel to better rotate the car. Since the Nordschleife is driven clockwise, the right rear would most often be the inside wheel, but given that the course is nearly 13 miles long, it still seems odd that one brake would suffer more than the others. Whatever the case, the front brake calipers are finished in blue like most M cars, while the rears are unpainted, indicating that this prototype is not wearing carbon-ceramic brakes (signified by gold calipers). It is, however, wearing production wheels, and while there are false panels on the hood, trunk, and fenders, the temporary bumpers show parking sensors, again indicating that the finished product is near. This electric M3 was snapped as it entered the BMW M Development Test Center at the Nürburgring, so we can look forward to seeing it on the track soon. Our spies are told to expect between 700 and 750 horsepower. The electric M3 is expected to enter production in March 2027, which suggests a reveal mid-way through next year, and it's likely to feature the new flax fiber composite technology that BMW expects will replace carbon fiber as a lightweight but environmentally friendly material. 20-inch wheels will reportedly be standard with a staggered 20-/21-inch setup available, and carbon-ceramic brakes will be optional. The M3 sedan will arrive first, and though no wagon has appeared on leaked internal production reports, it's all but inevitable. We expect to see the M3 shed more camouflage in the coming weeks, so stay tuned. In the meantime, a summary of everything we know about the electric M3 so far will have to suffice. Tesla enters India with $70,000 Model Y as Musk yields to steep tariffs

By Aditi Shah and Chandini Monnappa MUMBAI (Reuters) -Tesla launched on Tuesday its Model Y at about $70,000 in India, a significant markup relative to its other major markets, reflecting the country's high tariffs on electric vehicle imports which CEO Elon Musk has long-criticised. With deliveries estimated to start from the third quarter, the U.S. automaker is targeting a niche electric vehicle segment in India that accounts for just 4% of overall sales in the world's third-largest car market. It will compete mainly with German luxury giants such as BMW, Mercedes-Benz and South Korea's Kia rather than domestic mass-market EV players such as Tata Motors and Mahindra. Tesla opened its first showroom in Mumbai on Tuesday and began taking Model Y orders on its website, marking its long-awaited entry into the market where Musk once had plans to open a factory. For now, Tesla will import cars into a country where tariffs and related duties can exceed 100%, driving up the price for consumers. Tesla's Model Y rear-wheel drive is priced at about 6 million rupees ($70,000), while its Model Y long-range rear-wheel drive costs 6.8 million rupees, according to the website. The prices include the tariff and additional levies imposed by the state. There was no breakdown of the price on the website and Reuters could not immediately ascertain the listing price. They compare with a starting price from $44,990 in the United States, 263,500 yuan ($36,700) in China, and 45,970 euros ($53,700) in Germany. At the media-only event at the showroom, Tesla displayed two Model Y cars made in China and its supercharger, which it will install at eight different locations in Mumbai and in and around New Delhi, where it is also expected to open its next showroom. "We are here to create the ecosystem, to invest in the necessary infrastructure including the charging infrastructure," Isabel Fan, a regional director at Tesla, said at the launch event. 'We are building from 0 to 100. It will take time to cover the whole country.' TALKS ON TARIFFS Grappling with excess capacity in global factories and declining sales, Tesla has adopted a strategy of selling imported vehicles in India, despite the duties and levies. The U.S. EV maker has long lobbied India for lower import tariffs on cars, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi's officials remain in talks with U.S. President Donald Trump's administration to lower the levies under a bilateral trade deal. Tesla's U.S. factories also do not currently make the right-hand drive vehicles that are used in India. The company's Full Self-Driving capability is on offer at an additional cost of 600,000 rupees, but the website said that "active driver supervision" will be required, and the current features do not make the vehicle autonomous. Although India's road infrastructure has improved, traffic discipline - like lane driving - is still rudimentary, EV chargers are far and few and stray animals, including cattle, and potholes on the road are a big hurdle, even in cities. "In the future we wish to see R&D and manufacturing done in India, and I am sure at an appropriate stage Tesla will think about it," Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis told reporters outside the new Tesla outlet.
