Time of India26-07-2025
Ludhiana: Police probe into the July 20 Sham Nagar firing case, in which Haibowal resident Rohit was shot dead by Jawahar Nagar resident Manav, revealed that the victim and his aides wanted to kill Manav.
One of the arrested aides of the deceased confessed that they wanted to shoot Manav to prevent his uncle from testifying against the jailed criminal who murdered his (Manav's) father. Police recovered an illegal pistol along with a magazine and five live cartridges from the arrested accused, Rohan, 22, from Jawahar Nagar.
Deputy commissioner of police (DCP- investigation), Harpal Singh, said, "Police have arrested Rohan, who was accompanying Rohit Kumar along with another aide.
The three of them went to Sham Nagar to kill Manav. Manav's uncle, Kanwaljit Kumar (father's younger brother), was to testify in court on July 24 against jailed criminal, Darpan. Darpan and his accomplice, gangster Sukhwinder Singh Moni, shot Manav's father, Harjinder Jindi dead in 2020.
Kanwaljit was a witness to the murder. Darpan and Moni did not want Kanwaljit to testify. At first, the jailed criminals got assailants to fire at Kanwaljit's house on July 15.
On July 20, they sent Rohit, Rohan, and another aide to shoot Manav."
According to the DCP, Rohan's interrogation revealed that before they could shoot Manav, he shot Rohit with his licenced pistol. "Rohit, who was killed, was seen with a pistol on CCTV cameras installed at the spot," said the DCP. City police also brought Darpan and Moni on production warrant from Patiala and Ludhiana jail respectively.
DCP Harpal Singh said that the jailed criminals are behind both the Jawahar Nagar and Sham Nagar firing incidents.
They are said to have approached a common contact, Namit Sharma, who is currently in Europe, to execute their plan. Namit contacted his associate, Aman Sharma, of Jawahar Nagar, who enlisted the assailants on payment.
So far, city police have recovered six illegal pistols in both cases, including an imported Zigana P-Model pistol. A police official said that Aman Sharma arranged the weapons and ammunition. Efforts are on to track him and ascertain where the illegal pistols were procured from.

Ghaziabad: Man who stole cab to abduct ex-boss arrested with 2 aides

Ghaziabad: The Ghaziabad police on Tuesday arrested a 20-year-old man who along with his two accomplices allegedly injured a cab driver by slashing his throat and fled with the Maruti Wagon R, in order to kidnap his former employer or steal his Fortuner and Mercedes cars, said senior police officers. The DCP said that Abhay Kumar, the main suspect, wanted to avenge his arrest in the theft case. (Sakib Ali/HT Photo) The prime suspect was identified as Abhay Kumar, 20, resident of Kulesra, Gautam Budh Nagar, and his two accomplices as Aditya Rana, 20, resident of Hapur; and Kunal Panwar, 22, a resident of Ghaziabad. Police said that the trio on the night of August 7 booked a cab online and later overpowered its driver Mohammad Zakir, whom they tied up and dumped near the banks of the Upper Ganga Canal near Niwari after slashing his throat. They fled with his Wagon-R car. The injured driver was found by some locals on next morning and they informed the police. A first information report (FIR) for robbery was also registered following complaint by driver's brother Mohammad Rizwan under section 309 (robbery) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) at Niwari police station on August 8. 'Based on the CCTV footage, electronic surveillance, and manual intelligence, the three were arrested from near Niwari in connection with the robbery with the cab driver. Abhay sustained a gunshot to his leg following a retaliatory fire by police while trying to escape before opening fire at the police. During interrogation, the suspect told police that Abhay worked as a guard at a house in Kavi Nagar. In March, he was arrested for stealing a Fortuner and a Mercedes from his employer and landed up in jail,' said deputy commissioner of police (DCP) (rural zone) Surendra Nath Tiwary. According to the police, Abhay's former employer on March 19 had registered an FIR for theft, under section 303(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, at Kavi Nagar police station after his Fortuner and Mercedes were stolen. Officers from Kavi Nagar police station said that suspect Abhay, along with his accomplice Asif, was arrested by the North Delhi district police and two cars were recovered. 'Later, Abhay was brought to Ghaziabad and sent to Dasna jail in connection with the case. He later procured bail,' said assistant commissioner of police (Kavi Nagar circle) Bhaskar Verma. The DCP said that Abhay wanted to avenge his arrest in the theft case. 'So, he along with his two accomplices, robbed the cab driver and fled with his Wagon-R car. This car he intended to use for kidnapping his former employer or for stealing his two expensive cars which would fetch him a good amount of money. In the meantime, the trio was arrested while they were trying to flee to Meerut,' the DCP added. Police said that they recovered the stolen Wagon-R car, two mobiles, a country-made weapon, and three knives from the possession of the suspects. A case is already registered, and additional sections of the Arms Act and as per investigation will be added to the case investigation in due process, DCP added.

Stadium stampede: Opposition demands CBI probe and resignations of CM, DCM and Home Minister

Accusing the government of being responsible for the stampede during the Royal Challengers Bengaluru's (RCB) victory celebrations here that claimed 11 lives on June 4, the Opposition BJP on Tuesday demanded the resignations of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar and Home Minister G. Parameshwara, besides seeking a CBI probe into the incident. 'If you have a heart and sensibility to feel the pain of the grieving parents who lost their children in the stampede, all three of you should tender a public apology to them and own up responsibility for the tragedy,' said Leader of the Opposition R. Ashok, who initiated a debate on the incident, in the Assembly. 'This tragedy, among other things, had exposed the government's failure in crowd management and public safety protocol,' he alleged, and demanded the constitution of a Legislature House Committee to evolve appropriate rules to prevent the recurrence of such incidents. Timeline of events Ridiculing Chief Minister Siddaramaiah for his claims that he was not aware of the stampede deaths while participating in a programme to felicitate RCB team members on the steps of Vidhana Soudha, Mr. Ashok presented timeline of events corroborated through messages exchanged by police officers on walkie-talkies that indicated that five deaths had taken place even before the felicitation programme started, and that a total of nine deaths had taken place before the programme concluded. He wondered how the Chief Minister could be kept in the dark about such a tragedy, as all the police officials near him had walkie-talkies and the messages about deaths were being flashed continuously. Propriety questioned He questioned the propriety of felicitating the RCB team in front of Vidhana Soudha, as it is a private franchise-owned team. Even during the felicitation programme that had the presence of the Governor and the Chief Minister, protocols had been violated as the dignitaries were made to wait for 30 minutes for the players, he alleged. Also, more than 300 members were on the stage, though the Department of Personnel and Administrative Reforms (DPAR) had issued an order confining the number of dignitaries to a maximum of 30, he said. He alleged that Chief Secretary Shalini Rajneesh and the then DPAR Secretary G. Satyavathi (now retired) had ignored the information provided by DCP-rank officer Karibasavanna Gowda on the shortage of police personnel to control the crowd. Both Ms. Rajneesh and Ms. Satyavathi had not briefed the Chief Minister on the objections raised by Mr. Gowda on holding the felicitation on the grand steps of the Vidhana Soudha, Mr. Ashok said.

Hyderabad police transfer fake surrogacy racket cases to SIT

Hyderabad: Hyderabad police have transferred fake surrogacy and child trafficking racket cases to the Special Investigation Team (SIT) of Central Crime Station. The racket was busted by Gopalapuram police last month with the arrest of Dr. Athaluri Namratha, owner of Universal Srushti Fertility Centre and her associates. S. Rashmi Perumal, Deputy Commissioner of Police, North Zone, initially FIR was filed on July 27 against Dr. Namratha and her associates for defrauding a couple with fake surrogacy claims. Investigation into the initial complaint revealed a wider network of deceit, with multiple victims coming forward with similar allegations of cheating, organised medical fraud and child trafficking. During the course of investigation, police arrested 25 individuals, including doctors, lab technicians, managers/supervisors, agents and biological parents of the trafficked babies, all of them connected with an illegal surrogacy and baby-selling racket operated under the guise of fertility treatments at the Universal Srushti Fertility Centre at both Secunderabad and Visakhapatnam branches. The DCP said Gopalapuram Police registered eight more criminal cases against Dr Namratha and several of her associates, for their alleged involvement in an extensive illegal surrogacy and child trafficking racket. These individuals are accused of running an organised criminal network under the guise of fertility services, systematically exploiting vulnerable couples both emotionally and financially. In one of the cases, the accused took Rs. 22 lakhs from the victim couple in the guise of doing surrogacy, and later, a dead child was shown to the couple as their child. It was revealed in the investigation that an unconnected pregnant woman had delivered the child who later died due to health complications. In another case, the victim paid 12.5 lakhs for surrogacy procedures, but the identity of the surrogate was not revealed to them. In yet another case, the victims paid around 19 lakhs for surrogacy procedures and a pre-term girl was handed over to them. Though their samples were collected for embryo formation, the baby's DNA did not match theirs. On enquiry, the accused threatened them, which led them to file the complaint. A separate case was registered against Dr Namratha for fraudulently using the name of 90-year-old gynaecologist Suri Shrimathi and her medical license details on all her official letterheads and other medical documents to mislead the victims. Considering the gravity of the offences, cases have been transferred to CCS SIT for further investigation. According to the DCP, Dr. Namratha established multiple fertility clinics in Secunderabad, Kondapur, Visakhapatnam, Vijayawada, Nellore, Rajahmundry, Bhubaneswar, and Kolkata. She initially claimed to treat patients for infertility and later promoted surrogacy, assuring that all legal formalities would be handled by her clinic. After collecting large sums from clients, she obtained biological samples and provided regular updates on the 'progress' of the pregnancy via phone. At delivery time, babies were procured from vulnerable mothers through a network of agents and handed over to clients, falsely claiming they were from their own samples. Fake medical and DNA reports were created to support the deception. In this the sample of the original mother was used instead of the victim, and deceived the victims. It was revealed that agents were paid Rs 3.5 lakh for a girl and Rs. 4.5 lakh for a boy, while clients were charged up to Rs 30 to 40 lakh in each case,' said the DCP. She was previously involved in about 15 criminal cases, including Gopalapuram, Visakhapatnam, Vijayawada and Guntur, in which some were compromised and others are still under trial in the courts. The pattern of deception highlights coordinated efforts across cities, medical malpractices, and child trafficking, indicating a criminal syndicate which exploits loopholes in fertility laws. The accused Namratha created the network with her agents in many states in India. The network systematically targeted emotionally distressed couples and monetised their desperation with complete disregard for human rights, medical ethics, and the law, added the police official.
