Wang Chuqin's fury at ITTF after suspicious racquet damage at World Championships

Chinese table tennis star Wang Chuqin was furious with the organisers at the ITTF World Table Tennis Championships after his racquet suffered a malfunction before a mixed doubles match on Monday in Doha.

Wang and teammate Sung Yingsha were set to face Brazilian pair Bruna Takashi and men's world champion Hugo Calderano in the third round when the 25-year-old noticed visible creases and cracks at the top of the rubber.
Wang and coach Xiao Zhan protested at the state of the racquet but they were told it was in good enough condition for the match to go ahead and the Chinese duo eased to a 3-0 victory – and even earned a bye to the quarter-finals after fourth-round opponents, Romanian pair Ovidiu Ionescu and Elizabeta Samara, withdrew, citing an injury for the latter.
'I have no idea why these things always happen to me,' Wang said. 'I felt something was wrong with the sponge the moment I stepped onto the court.
'The sponge opened halfway but it was fine before the test, and it couldn't be used for the match. I am very disappointed with the organisation and the referees – they couldn't even inspect the racquets properly.'

Chinese table tennis fans slam Harimoto over medical timeout against Wang Chuqin

Chinese table tennis fans have accused Japan's Tomokazu Harimoto of feigning injury to take advantage of a medical timeout as he won the World Table Tennis Champions Yokohama title against Wang Chuqin. Harimoto, who was born to Chinese parents, stunned world champion Wang 4-2 at the Yokohama Buntai arena on Monday to win his first WTT Champions crown since lifting the European Summer Series in 2022. However, Chinese fans cried foul play, posting images of Harimoto calling for a medical timeout and seemingly gesturing towards his left leg, only to have a physiotherapist massage his right leg. Footage of the match shows Harimoto talking to the umpire with his left leg placed on a step. However, during the conversation, he could be seen pointing to his right knee and pressing his hand against it as he requested a medical timeout. During discussions with officials and his coaching staff, Harimoto repeatedly pointed to his right knee before a physiotherapist massaged it. So where exactly is the injury?' one popular comment said.

Barcelona wrap up pre-season with rout of Italy's Como

Barcelona wrap up pre-season with rout of Italy's Como Barcelona's Raphinha, left, celebrates scoring their third goal with new signing Marcus Rashford. Photo: Reuters Reigning Spanish champions Barcelona completed their pre-season preparations by thrashing Italian side Como 5-0 on Sunday in a game which signalled a thawing of relations with goalkeeper Marc-Andre Ter Stegen. Barca also gave Marcus Rashford a substitute's appearance two weeks after the England forward joined on loan from Manchester United. Double strikes from Fermín Lopez and Lamine Yamal and a first-half goal from Brazilian Raphinha completed the rout in the Joan Gamper Trophy. Played at the Johan Cruyff Stadium within the team's training complex, while Barcelona wait for the heavily delayed modernisation of the Camp Nou to be completed, Hansi Flick's team showed fluency as they prepare to begin their Liga title defence away to Mallorca on Saturday. Before kickoff on Sunday, Ter Stegen gave the traditional captain's speech from the pitch, just days after his dispute with the club over the handling of his back injury broke to the surface. "I think it was important to resolve the issue between the club and me, and now it's time to look forward," said the 33-year-old German goalkeeper, two days after having the captaincy restored. "We're going to fight again for all the trophies and we hope that with your help we can win all the titles possible," Ter Stegen told the fans. Rashford suffered mixed fortunes, providing the cross for Raphinha to score but also blowing the chance to tap into an empty net. (AFP)
