The incident, reported at Nandanvan police station, stemmed from ongoing arguments over a Rs6 lakh loan Sheikh gave to Reshma's sister six months ago for house construction. Frequent demands for repayment had led to regular abuse and assaults, said sources. Police said Sheikh did not have any past criminal records.
On Sunday, the argument escalated to a boiling point when an enraged Sheikh struck Reshma on the head with the chopper. Her relatives' swift intervention saved her life, rushing her to Vanjari Hospital in Bhande Plot, where she remains in critical condition.
Following the assault, Sheikh was arrested by Nandanvan police based on a complaint by Reshma's brother-in-law.

Thiruvananthapuram : Pettah police arrested a Kollam, Mughathala-based woman, Reshma, 24, for defrauding several people by offering jobs in the Indian Railways. According to the police, she befriended the victims after meeting them by chance at Thampanoor railway station. She used to wear an identity card of the Indian Railways to convince victims that she was a senior clerk in the recruitment division. Reshma then maintained a relationship with the victims tactically. During communications over the phone, she promised the victims jobs and later took lakhs of rupees from them. One of the complainants, a Manacaud-based woman and her brother lost Rs 4.5 lakh in the scam. Reshma offered the woman a job as junior clerk and her brother a job in the post of commercial-cum-ticket clerk. She collected the amount claiming that she had to bribe some of her senior officers. The victims were asked to sign several documents and an offer letter was also sent. They realised it was a scam only when they verified it with the office concerned. "Reshma stays with her husband, mother and three children in Kollam. The probe team also found that the documents she gave to the victims looked similar to the ones in possession of Murukeshan Pillai, who was earlier arrested in a job scam. Pillai also cheated several people by offering jobs in the railways. The links between them were being examined, police said. Meanwhile, a court granted her bail when Pettah police produced her in connection with the case registered on the complaint of the Manacaud-based woman.

Man swaps ATM card of senior citizen under guise of help, withdraws Rs 40,000
Agency: PTI Last Updated: Mumbai, July 25 (PTI) A 52-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly swapping the debit card of a senior citizen under the pretext of help at an ATM kiosk here and withdrawing Rs 40,000, police said on Saturday. The accused, identified as Arif Ali Sheikh, works as a labourer. He targeted the 75-year-old man at the ATM kiosk of a nationalised bank in Kandivali a few days back. 'Sheikh pretended to help and swapped the debit card. He withdrew Rs 40,000 from the bank account of the unsuspecting senior citizen," a police official said. On receiving the complaint, crime detection personnel examined the footage of the CCTV cameras at the spot in Kurar. Man arrested with mephedrone worth 9L
Vadodara: A man who allegedly came to the city to deliver drugs, was arrested by sleuths of the special operations group (SOG) on Friday. Police said they had got a tip-off about a drug delivery near Old Padra Road, after which they kept an eye on the area. Police said the accused, Sadiq Sheikh, went to a spot near an open plot on a two-wheeler, after which he was nabbed by them. When he was frisked, police allegedly found mephedrone worth over Rs 9 lakh on him. Sheikh told police he came to the city from Bharuch to deliver the drugs. A case under the NDPS Act was registered against him at JP Road police station. Sheikh was earlier accused of murder in Anand in 2008.
