Smith sets up comfortable Spirit win over Rockets
England batter Jamie Smith's half-century set up a comfortable 21-run win for London Spirit at Lord's, inflicting a first defeat on Trent Rockets in The Hundred. Smith was promoted to open, a role he fulfils for England's white-ball sides, and struck 52 from 34 balls as Spirit posted a challenging 162-5. The visitors made a bright start in reply as Tom Banton and Joe Root added 73 for the first wicket, but they fell away after the former's departure and crawled to 141-6.Rockets were ultimately punished for a sloppy fielding effort. Smith was put down on 23 and 26, while Kane Williamson was also dropped twice in making 45 as the pair added 73 for the second wicket. Smith clubbed four sixes and two fours while Williamson showed his sublime touch and class in a 32-ball knock that followed Australian David Warner's departure for six. Warner's compatriot Ashton Turner provided a late cameo of 30 from16 balls, while Ollie Pope made 17 from nine, to complete a much-improved batting effort after Spirit's previous performance on home turf saw them bowled out for just 80.Banton led the charge in his opening stand with Root but the course of the game changed when he played on to his stumps off Jamie Overton, who struggled through his 20 balls with an injury that could be a cause for concern for Spirit.Banton's departure sparked a collapse of four wickets for 17 runs, including Root for 27 and Rehan Ahmed for a duck, and their task became even more difficult when Tom Alsop was struck by an Overton bouncer that burst through his helmet and he had to retire hurt. Marcus Stoinis clubbed four sixes late on in a characteristically dynamic 35 not out from 22 balls but Rockets still fell considerably short.

Calvert-Lewin can 'revive career' with Leeds move
Dominic Calvert-Lewin has a chance to "revive his career" after joining newly promoted Leeds, says boss Daniel 28-year-old striker has signed a three-year contract on a free transfer after ending a nine-year spell with Everton on a disappointing earned 11 England caps during his time with the Toffees, but was hindered by a series of injuries in recent seasons and left at the end of last term when his contract said: "It's a chance for him to revive his career and reach his former heights, when he was outstanding at the Premier League level, and it's a big chance for us because we've got a proven Premier League player."The key for him right now is not to be over-motivated. We will build his fitness step by step so that he finds confidence back in his body and his rhythm. If he does so, he has shown what he can do and he can be outstanding for us." Having arrived from Sheffield United in 2016, Calvert-Lewin scored 57 goals in 239 Premier League appearances for Everton, with his best haul of 21 in all competitions in then he has failed to reach double figures and was restricted to just 18 games in both the 2021-22 and 2022-23 all, Calvert-Lewin scored 71 goals in 273 games for Everton and becomes Leeds' eighth signing since earning promotion back to the top flight."We are all pretty happy and delighted that he will wear a Leeds shirt from now on," added Farke."As a newly promoted side, we want to sign players that have already delivered at the top level, but are still at a good age and on the way up in the career, not already on their way down. Those boxes are all ticked by Dominic."We don't have to speak about his qualities, he has more or less all the skills that you would like your striker to have."Of course, his last few seasons were interrupted by injuries but he still managed to play 26 games last season."

Ruben Amorim backs Benjamin Sesko to be Man Utd star for years to come
Ruben Amorim says new signing Benjamin Sesko is ready to start Sunday's Premier League opener against Arsenal and backed the striker to star for Manchester United for years to come. Just three months on from the end of the Red Devils' worst top-flight season since 1974, there is a sense of optimism heading into the new season thanks in no small part to some exciting acquisitions. Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Diego Leon's arrivals brought hope and were complemented by the signing of talented 22-year-old striker Sesko from RB Leipzig in a deal worth up to £73.7million last Saturday. The Slovenia international was presented on the pitch later that day ahead of the pre-season friendly against Fiorentina at Old Trafford, where he could line up against Arsenal on Sunday. 'I think he has great potential in everything he does,' head coach Amorim said. 'He can play different types of football, he is going to feel that Premier League is really aggressive. 'He is going to learn but he has a great potential and I can see Ben being a striker for Manchester United for a lot of years. 'That's why we paid so much money to have a striker that will have his history in our club.' Asked if Sesko is able to start against Arsenal, the United boss said: 'Of course. We didn't have a lot of time but he's ready. 'First of all, physically, he's ready. That is a big component in our league. Then, he's really smart. Every detail that he asks, he's a guy that is always thinking. 'He spends all afternoon here working on his fitness, so he's ready to play. We will see if he's going to start.' Sesko scored 21 goals in all competitions last term and has made a good first impression on meticulous Amorim at United's new-look Carrington training complex. 'He's one guy who stays here, has lunch, and goes to the medical department, does the stretching,' he said. 'He is always thinking about football. 'He's really obsessed about that and that is a good thing because you don't have to think about that aspect with that young guy. 'I don't need to tell Ben, 'Ben, this is Manchester United, a lot of pressure, you have to perform, you need to be ready for the physicality, we need to be ready, every game is like do or die'. 'With that guy, I don't have that concern. I have the opposite, enjoy a little bit. 'I really like that (he asks questions), especially when it is smart questions so he's listened and he wants to perform so that is very good.' Sesko's arrival raises fresh questions over the future of another 22-year-old striker, Rasmus Hojlund. The Denmark international has been strongly linked with an exit, just two years on from joining from Atalanta for £64m plus a potential £8m in add-ons. Hojlund said on United's pre-season tour that he wants to stay at United and fight for his place, but he was an unused substitute against Fiorentina and links with AC Milan persist. 'He is one more option,' Amorim said. 'We will see. We are focused on this game and Rasmus is still our player.' Hojlund's involvement on Sunday will be interesting to see, as will goalkeeper Andre Onana. Another player linked with a summer move, he did not feature in pre-season due to a hamstring injury but is back available to face Arsenal. 'Nous (Mazraoui) and Licha [Lisandro Martinez] are out,' Amorim added. 'They cannot play in this game. Josh (Zirkzee) recovered, Andre (Onana) recovered, they are options for this game. We will see.'

David Coote's career as a referee almost certainly over, admits Howard Webb
Referees' chief Howard Webb believes David Coote 's career as a referee is almost certainly over. Former Premier League match official Coote was on Tuesday given an eight-week suspension by the Football Association over abusive words he used about ex-Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp. He was sacked by Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) in December, a month after the video filmed in July 2020 came to light. The 43-year-old has a potential route back into football after the FA said he would be free to officiate again after serving the ban and completing an education programme. But PGMOL boss Webb feels that is unlikely. 'I think it'd be really difficult for David to come back, I'm afraid to say,' said Webb. 'He's somebody that we stayed in contact with, somebody who was part of our refereeing family for a long time and served the game for a long period of time and I've known him personally for many years. 'It's sad what happened with David but I think it would be challenging for him to come back.' Coote's misconduct was defined as an aggravated breach under the FA's rules because there was a reference to Klopp's nationality. In the video, he described Klopp as a 'German c***' and said he was 'f****** arrogant'. Coote was banned by European football's governing body Uefa until June 30, 2026 after a different video emerged of him snorting a white powder through a bank note while in Germany for Euro 2024. In January, Coote came out as gay and said a lifelong struggle to hide his sexuality had contributed to the rant about Klopp and his drug use. Webb said PGMOL has reviewed and 'beefed up' its support for match officials and their families in the wake of Coote's downfall. 'When it became apparent David had made some bad choices away from the football field, we had to care for him and we had to try to understand why he'd made some of those choices and were they connected to the job,' said Webb. 'We spoke to all of our officials and there was some feedback from them about the support that they think they need. 'It was a good time for us to reflect on the services that we do provide. 'We've got sports psychologists and some element of mental health and wellbeing and support. But there was a recognition that could be beefed up.' Webb, who took charge of the 2010 Champions League and World Cup finals before retiring in 2014, encouraged match officials to be open about personal issues. 'I don't want officials to have a fear that if they step forward and say, 'can we have a chat?' that that's going to impact their appointments,' said the 54-year-old. 'We wanted to really emphasise to them that doing that was a sign of strength and not weakness. 'I think we've made good ground over the last few months in that respect because we've probably not had those conversations previously. I think we've had a few of them since. 'Having been there myself, traditionally you'd say I've got to show strength, I've got to show nobody's getting to me, I've got a thick skin. But I think over time it can weigh you down.' PA
