Getafe stun Atletico with an Arambarri brace

Diego Simeone's side, second, would have gone top with a victory after leaders Barcelona's match was postponed on Saturday, and they were on course for three points after Alexander Sorloth struck from the penalty spot after 75 minutes.
However Atletico forward Angel Correa was sent off and Getafe midfielder Mauro Arambarri scored two late goals to snatch victory for the hosts.
Later Sunday champions Real Madrid, third, host Rayo Vallecano and if they win will pull level with Barca.
Simeone picked a strong side despite the Champions League last 16 second leg clash against Real Madrid on Wednesday on the horizon.
However Getafe set out to frustrate the visitors and neither team was able to trouble the other significantly in the first half.
The Atletico coach's son Giuliano Simeone probed down the right and was his team's most threatening player.
Getafe came closest to opening the scoring when Christantus Uche directed a header straight at Jan Oblak, when well placed to score.
Atletico midfielder Rodrigo de Paul suffered a knock in the first half and was taken off at half-time with the Champions League in mind.
Simeone brought on Sorloth for Julian Alvarez and it was the Norwegian who opened the scoring, from the penalty spot after Omar Alderete handled the ball.
Sorloth drilled home his 10th league goal of the season, despite starting just nine times in 24 appearances.
Atletico seemed comfortable with their lead until striker Correa, another substitute, was sent off for a high tackle on Djene Dakonam in the 87th minute.
Moments later Atletico levelled through Arambarri, who collected a flicked-on free kick and rammed home.
With 10 minutes of stoppage time added on and the wind in their sails, Getafe went for a winner and found one.
Diego Rico's effort from distance was cleverly diverted home by Uruguay international Arambarri, who was just onside and snatched his team the three points.
Earlier, Simeone on Saturday jumped to the defence of Javi Galan after the 30-year-old left back's below-par performances in key matches, pointing to the quality of the opposition the defender has come up against in recent weeks.

England manager Thomas Tuchel is determined to harness Jude Bellingham's "fire" to his side's advantage rather than the Real Madrid star intimidating team-mates or raging at referees. "He has the fire — I don't want to dim that, he should play with that as that's his strength. "But the fire comes also with some attribute that can intimidate team-mates. Sometimes you see the explosion towards referees and the anger in his game. "If he can channel this in the right way he has something that we need and that edge is hard to find." Tuchel, who won the Champions League at Chelsea and league titles with Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich, was hired with the task of ending England's wait for a major tournament victory since 1966. Under Gareth Southgate they reached the final of each of the last two Euros, plus a quarter-final and semi-final of the past two World Cups. Tuchel has a richly talented squad to choose from but has so far failed to find the right blend in three underwhelming World Cup qualifying wins over Albania, Latvia and Andorra before the Senegal defeat. "I already have an idea of what to do," he added with one year to go till the 2026 World Cup begins. "We did some experiments in the second camp, not everything was bad, we did some good things but the two games were not good enough. "It was a good learning and it brings clarity. Each game is a learning situation and helps us mould the team and find solutions."

Brazil, Ecuador book World Cup berths

Photo: AFP Brazil booked their place at the 2026 World Cup in North America on Tuesday with a lacklustre 1-0 home victory over Paraguay, the first win of Carlo Ancelotti's reign. The five-time world champions — the only team to appear in every edition of the World Cup — punched their ticket to the finals in Canada, the United States and Mexico thanks to Vinicius Jr. The Real Madrid star bundled home from close range in the 44th minute in Sao Paulo after a cross from new Manchester United signing Matheus Cunha. Uruguay's 2-0 win over Venezuela in Montevideo had raised the prospect of qualification for both Brazil and Paraguay at Corinthians Arena. Paraguay were left needing only a point to qualify while Brazil knew they could advance with a win in Ancelotti's second game in charge. In the event it was Brazil who seized the opportunity presented by Venezuela's loss with Vinicius scoring the only goal just before half-time. Brazil had struggled to create many chances up until that point, with Cunha squandering a golden chance in the 35th minute after heading wide from point-blank range. Liverpool star Luis Diaz fired Colombia into the lead with a superb 24th minute goal, and the Colombians were given a further boost midway through the second half when the world champions were reduced to 10 men after Enzo Fernandez's Colombia's hopes of a vital win were dashed nine minutes from time when Thiago Almada weaved into the box and found the target to level. The top six finishers in South America qualify automatically for the World Cup, with the seventh-placed team advancing to an intercontinental playoff. Bolivia defeated Chile 2-0 to end the former South American champions' hopes of qualification. It is the third straight World Cup that Chile have missed out loss continues a dramatic fall from grace for 'La Roja', who won back-to-back Copa Americas in 2015 and 2016.
