‘Selectors have given whatever the Gautam Gambhir has asked for': Aakash Chopra says India head coach must deliver Test results now
With India only winning one of their last nine Tests since a home series whitewash against New Zealand last November, the pressure is mounting on coach Gautam Gambhir to deliver results in red-ball cricket, said former India opener Aakash Chopra.
India have hit a rough patch with their Test team in transition as a new-look India side under Shubman Gill went down against a marauding England unit led by Ben Stokes at Headingley.
'There is a lot of pressure on Gautam Gambhir. The pressure is absolutely mounting. If you look at his performances in Test cricket, you will find that he has not won a lot of matches,' Chopra said, speaking on his YouTube channel.
'He won two matches against Bangladesh and one against Australia. However, he lost three against New Zealand, three against Australia and one against England. He has been continuously losing,' Chopra said referring to his former Delhi teammate's coaching record.
'But in Test cricket, I think the questions are going to be there. And I think there is a lot of pressure on this series,' Chopra said.
Chopra added that there will be question marks over Gambhir's reign as the Test coach if India concede the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy by an overwhelming margin by August.
'If the England series doesn't go too well, then there will be a question mark – where are they going and what are they doing? Because the selectors will feel that whatever team management is asking for, it is being given. The type of player you want, the number of players you want, and the player you are pointing at are being given. So, if that is the case, you need to deliver the results. Period. There are no excuses,' Chopra said.
The winless streak of eight successive matches is the longest endured by India in over a decade. Gambhir, however, backed an erratic bowling attack to regroup and come back fighting in the second Test which begins on Wednesday in Edgbaston.
'When we pick the squad, we pick the squad on trust, not on hope. These boys will deliver for us,' said Gambhir after the Headingley Test.

Another Josh Hazlewood Fifer Demolishes West Indies In 1st Test
Last Updated: Australia's pace attack, led by Josh Hazlewood's 5-43, dismantled West Indies for 141, securing a 159-run victory in the first Test. Australia's renowned pace attack dismantled the West Indies' frail batting lineup, skittling the hosts for a mere 141 in 33.4 overs, thereby securing a comprehensive 159-run victory in the final over of the third day of the first Test at Kensington Oval on Friday. Josh Hazlewood was the primary destroyer, taking 5-43 as the tourists excelled with both bat and ball throughout the day. Half-centuries from Alex Carey, Beau Webster, and Travis Head were pivotal in recovering from 65-4 late on day two to a second-innings total of 310 by tea the following day. Shamar Joseph led the West Indies bowling effort, claiming five wickets for 87 runs, resulting in a match haul of 9-133. Any target exceeding 200 was always going to be challenging on this two-paced surface. As it turned out, the West Indies never rose to the occasion once former captain Kraigg Brathwaite fell to Mitchell Starc in the first over. Hazlewood then took the spotlight. His precise accuracy accounted for John Campbell and debutant Brandon King with successive balls, before also dismissing captain Roston Chase and Keacy Carty. Chase's Australian counterpart, Pat Cummins, removed first-innings top-scorer Shai Hope, and insult was added to considerable injury when substitute fielder Marnus Labuschagne ran out Alzarri Joseph with a direct hit from mid-off. Hazlewood returned to the attack to dismiss Jomel Warrican, but Shamar Joseph entertained with 44 off 22 balls before falling to off-spinner Nathan Lyon, who then removed Jayden Seales with his first ball to complete the victory with two days to spare. Justin Greaves remained unbeaten on 38. 'It was just about hitting the right areas time and time again and just being patient," said Hazlewood, explaining the tactics to exploit the challenging surface. 'There are a few cracks there on a good length and just short of a length, which kept the batters guessing whether to go forward or back with a few skidding through as we saw." Australia's intent was clear at the start of the day as Head and Webster transformed the previous evening's consolidation into controlled aggression, contributing to a 102-run partnership for the fifth wicket. Head was trapped lbw for 61 by Shamar Joseph 20 minutes before lunch. However, the first session's course could have been very different had Greaves held on to a straightforward catch at second slip off Alzarri Joseph when Head was on 22. This was the seventh chance missed by the West Indies slip cordon in the match, a poor display in a fundamental aspect of the game that began on day one when four catches were dropped. With a clear intent on aggression on a pitch becoming increasingly two-paced, the Australians progressed at almost a run-a-minute after lunch despite losing wickets at regular intervals. Carey, who top-scored with 65, built on the platform laid by Head and Webster (63), who fell caught behind off the persistent Shamar Joseph. The right-armer also dismissed Starc and wrapped up the innings when last man Hazlewood was bowled off the inside edge, securing his fourth five-wicket haul and third against Australia. By then, the task already seemed beyond the West Indies, which was confirmed two balls before stumps. (With AFP Inputs)

Give Shubman Gill a fair chance: Mohammed Azharuddin slams India captain critics
Mohammed Azharuddin jumped to the defence of India Test captain Shubman Gill amidst criticism after the loss in the Headingley Test to England. Gill, who took over as skipper of the side after Rohit Sharma's Test retirement, was unable to inspire the Indian team to secure a win, despite scoring a fine hundred in the first innings. The 25-year-old's aura as captain was questioned by Nasser Hussain and many questioned his tactics during the game. Despite this, some of the pundits, like Ravi Shastri, have defended Gill and the latest to do it is Azharuddin. The former India captain said that it was too early to talk about his captaincy and he should be given a fair chance as he has just started the job. advertisementAzharuddin said that Gill should be given time and support and quick criticism of players should be stopped. 'This is his just first match as a captain, you just can't talk about captaincy. It's too early to talk about captaincy,' said Azharuddin.'We should give him a fair chance and he has just taken over. So, you should give him a lot of time and support. We cannot just complain and criticise players like that.'Azharuddin commented on the upcoming Test in Edgbaston and said that India will need to be smart with their combinations and the bowling has to be perfect. 'We lost because of batting collapse, but anyways now they have to pick the right players and bowling has to be perfect,' said Azharuddin.'India too dependent on Bumrah'advertisementAzharuddin said that it seemed like India were too dependent on Jasprit Bumrah to produce magic during the first Test loss. Bumrah picked up five wickets in the first innings before England were able to nullify him in the second one and secure the win. Azharuddin further stated that India need more experienced bowlers and should consider playing Kuldeep Yadav in the second Test. 'They are too much dependent on Bumrah. It's not easy because you need more experienced bowlers, and they should play Kuldeep Yadav,' said Azharuddin. India and England will square off in the second Test on July 2. - EndsTune InMust Watch

AB de Villiers suggests that India use Jasprit Bumrah like Dale Steyn
Jasprit Bumrah is arguably the best bowler of the current generation. However, with his injury history, managing him has become one of the trickier parts for the Indian side. For the ongoing India vs England series, even before the team has reached the English shores, the Indian side has decided that the premium bowler will play in only three games out of five. However, former South African cricketer AB de Villiers suggested that India could use Bumrah the way South Africa used Dale Steyn. 'He is probably the top bowler in the world in all formats right now. So, it's very difficult to decide a way to rest him, but in my opinion, Test cricket is the ultimate form of the game. And this Test series probably would've been the one, in my opinion, to get him ready for all five Test matches. That's what we used to do with Dale (Steyn). Rest him in lesser important T20 and ODI series and get him ready for the big Test series against Australia, England, and India away from home… New Zealand to a certain extent, depending on the rankings at that time,' De Villiers said. 'So, I don't know if it was mismanagement or perhaps because he recently got back from injury, sort of saw the IPL as the warmup phase. Maybe, went to the surgeon, who let him know, 'You can't play the five Test matches.' So, I mean you got to respect that, and at the end of the day, it's up to Team India to sort of manage him well,' he added. India and England series, and that is all to do with Jasprit Bumrah. Will he be playing the 2nd Test match? How many Test matches will he be playing in this Test series? The very big Test series, and I say it like that because I don't know if it's a serious injury, and maybe because of the lack of workload coming into this Test series. They are scared of him getting a very bad injury and being out for a few years, or is it managing workload?''If it's the latter, I don't know if they've gone right about this workload management leading up to this huge five-Test match series. It doesn't get bigger than that, guys, except for maybe the WTC final,' he added.
