The 2025 Mercedes-Benz CLE53 Cabriolet Is A Stately Speedster

Forbes6 days ago
When you see the AMG badge on the back of any Mercedes, you know it's got some teeth and claws, and the CLE53 certainly delivers. It's got a 443-hp turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six engine assisted by a 48-volt hybrid system.

Yet at 4,597 pounds, you never forget how much weight the engine's being asked to push around, making it handle less like a sportster than a heavy sedan. And there's nothing wrong with that. A week's test proved a delightful and satisfying experience.
What's new for 2025?
For 2025, the CLE lineup expands with the addition of this convertible model, replacing the coupe's hardtop with a multi-layer soft top. This roof can retract and stow beneath a pop-up tonneau cover in about 20 seconds, meaning it's theoretically possible to raise or lower at stop lights, but it's best to pull over.

The Cabriolet features slightly softer suspension tuning than the coupe, though it retains key performance components such as adaptive dampers and rear-wheel steering.
Looks
Visually, the CLE53 distinguishes itself with aggressive styling cues while still maintaining an upscale, refined appearance. It looks fast while standing still and turned many heads during its test.

Inside, and tech
Inside, the 2025 model comes equipped with comfort upgrades including a power-operated wind deflector, neck warmers for front-seat occupants and an 11.9-inch infotainment touchscreen that tilts forward and backward to reduce glare when the top is down. That's a great innovation, as anyone who has ever tried to see a drowned-out screen when competing with the sun knows.
Nappa leather upholstery is available as an option along with the AMG Performance Seat package which adds more aggressively bolstered front bucket seats.
To minimize wind buffeting with the top down, the CLE53 Cabriolet includes a power-operated wind deflector that deploys behind the rear-seat headrests. Integrated neck warmers in the front seats provide added comfort on cooler days. I don't know about you, but I love convertibles so much that I'll put a top down when it's 20 degrees out while wearing a ski hat and the heat blasting, so the neck warmers are another great touch.
The Cabriolet provides 14.0 cubic feet of trunk space with the top up, shrinking to 10.0 cubic feet when the roof is stowed. The dash is particularly fab-looking with its racing flavor including carbon-fiber trim, microfiber upholstery, a flat-bottom steering wheel and red stitching. The kids'll love it.
Tech
A 11.9-inch infotainment touchscreen rises from the center console to meet a trio of air vents at the top of the dashboard, serving as the focal point for Mercedes's latest MBUX software. A separate 12.3-inch digital display sits ahead of the driver, providing configurable gauge readouts.
Users can interact with the infotainment system via the touchscreen or through touch-sensitive controls on the steering wheel. However, the steering wheel buttons can be unintuitive - you need to look them up to really understand what each does. 'Hey, Mercedes' initiates enough assistance to get you through the basics.

This latest version of MBUX comes with native apps like TikTok, Angry Birds, Webex, and Zoom along with built-in support for Apple Music, Spotify, and Tidal. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are included as standard, but I never use them as I'd like to keep my personal information to myself. I connect with Bluetooth and leave it at that.
More about the engine
A nine-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive come standard. AMG has refined the CLE's adaptive suspension system, too, tailoring it for a more performance-focused driving experience when you want/need it. The setup includes progressively firmer tuning in the Sport and Sport+ modes. You'll get from 0-60 in about 4.1 seconds. Mileage is around a not-bad 25 MPG city/highway combined.
The Drive
It's a thrilling blastoff, but it's less ferocious-sounding than other AMGs I've tested. No one will hear you coming down the block as with some sports cars. Cornering was satisfactory as was braking during a trip down Bear Mountain, but you don't feel the urge to really blast it, partly because of the slightly muted, non-agressive exhaust note and partly because the car's so heavy. It doesn't mean it's not a delightful experience whether joyriding or going to the store.

Pricing
The price of the 2025 Mercedes-AMG CLE-Class starts at $75,450 and goes up to $85,800 depending on the trim and options. Go for the Pinnacle trim and you'll get the works - a head-up display, an augmented-reality nav system, upgraded headlamps and access to more third-party apps via the MBUX infotainment system.
Room for improvement
There's a slight hesitation when you step on the accelerator and at first you may think 'Am I in neutral?' This is also the first vehicle I've ever tested where if I sing in the car, or talk to myself, the software thinks I'm talking to it - and answers. Saying 'Hey, Mercedes, don't talk' fixed it, but I had to say it a lot.
Safety and Driver-Assistance Features
The CLE53 comes standard with automated emergency braking, lane-keeping assist and a driver-attention monitor. A forward-collision warning, automated emergency braking, lane-departure warning and lane-keeping assist also come with. Adaptive cruise control and blind-spot monitoring are options.
Warranty and Maintenance Coverage
Mercedes-AMG provides competitive limited and powertrain warranties but doesn't offer complimentary scheduled maintenance. A limited warranty covers four years or 50,000 miles and a powertrain warranty covers four years or 50,000 miles.
Conclusion: It's perfect for the driver wishing both style and speed at under $100,000.

Chinese Auto Skirt EU BEV Tariffs To Post Record Sales In Europe

Formerly British brand MG lead the way for Chinese cars in the EU this year, skirting BEV import ... More tariffs by increasing plug-in hybrid and series hybrid sales. Photo:. Higher tariffs on imported Chinese electric cars last year haven't stopped the import surge, with Chinese automakers setting new highs in June for European sales. The EU provisionally imposed import tariffs on Chinese EVs last year to protect their own auto industry from Government-subsidised Chinese EV technology, but omitted combustion and plug-in hybrids from the duties. That omission has been exploited by the Chinese brands, which boosted their EU markets share to 5.5%, and they're growing at a monthly rate of 48%. While Europeans bought 6% fewer cars in the first half of 2025 than they did last year, Chinese brands rose 72%, with MG, BYD, Chery and Geely soaking up nearly 90% of all Chinese sales. EU tariffs on BEVs saw the MG4 slide backwards to be almost within the grasp of Geely's Polestar ... More brand for 2025 sales. Photo: Sjoerd van. The Chinese BEV assault has been blunted (dropping from 48% of the nation's sales in June 2024 to just 36%) though, and so has its combustion-only effort, which fell from 38% to 23% of sales. The slack was taken up by plug-in hybrids, which boomed from 4% to 22%, and series hybrids grew from 5% to 15%. BYD sells the most PHEVs of the Chinese brands, with the Seal U selling more than 6000 of the 14,522 total PHEV sales from China. The Chinese BEV assault on Europe was hit so hard that MG's MG 4 held onto its Chinese BEV sales lead with only 2664 sales, just holding off the Geely-owned, Chinese-built Polestar 4 (2385) and Polestar 2 (2363) models, which have a more Europe-facing history. Shanghai-based, Government-owned MG Motor saw its sales slump in June, hamstrung by tariffs on its mainstay, the fully electric MG4. The MG4 saw a 72% decline over the pre-tariff levels of June 2024. The overall monthly result saw it post 25,027 sales, which was strong enough to remain ahead of the growing BYD, which leapt ahead by 303% to 14,968 sales. Chery finally introduced its eponymous brand in Europe, sitting alongside its Jaecoo and Omoda brands, and trailed home its compatriots with 8860 sales.

Remember When BMW Built a Mid-Engined Hatchback?

If you've been following Motor1 for a long time, you likely remember my long-running Concept We Forgot series. I've decided to bring it back and aim to improve it by taking a deeper dive into some of the most unusual concepts that have crossed my radar over the years. A good starting point is this: the 1993 BMW Z13. There's more to this Bavarian city car than its quirky appearance, which alone is enough to warrant a closer look at the diminutive hatchback. The Z13 tackled car bloat by shrinking the BMW formula down to just 135.4 inches (3440 millimeters) in length. For context, the eccentric i3 electric hatchback was a full 22 inches (560 millimeters) longer. Despite its tiny footprint, the concept had enough room for three people in a McLaren F1-style layout, with a central driver's seat and a pair of passenger seats mounted farther back on each side. This was all possible in a car that was only 64.5 inches (1640 millimeters) wide. Clever packaging included mounting the engine at the rear, just ahead of the axle. While the idea of a mid-engine hatchback might conjure thoughts of performance cars like the Renault Clio V6 or the more recent Toyota GR Yaris M concept , the Z13 was far from a hot hatch. It used a naturally aspirated inline-four derived from the BMW K1100 motorcycle. With just 82 horsepower and 81 pound-feet (110 Newton-meters) of torque, it didn't set your pulse racing. The fact that it featured a continuously variable transmission (CVT), believed to have been sourced from Ford , didn't help either. Although it wasn't your typical sporty Bimmer, it did stay true to BMW's rear-wheel-drive tradition. The Z13 needed around 10 seconds to reach 62 mph (100 km/h) and topped out at 112 mph (180 km/h). But that was perfectly adequate for a car designed primarily for city use rather than chasing Nürburgring lap times . The idea wasn't to create a performance car, but to offer a solution for people who typically drive alone and don't need a 3 Series, let alone an even larger car. Here's what prompted BMW to create what could've become an entry-level model had it reached production: "To design a compact vehicle suitable for modern needs, with exemplary active and passive safety, a high level of comfort and convenience, convincing performance with acceptable economy and environmental acceptability, but also fun to drive and elegant but restrained in its appearance." To maximize interior space while keeping the car compact, BMW stretched the wheelbase to 90.5 inches (2300 millimeters), widened the tracks, and shortened the overhangs as much as possible. Weighing only 1,829 pounds (830 kilograms), fuel economy must have been exceptional. The Z13 was built around a computer-optimized aluminum space frame and had a drag coefficient of 0.34, a remarkable figure for its time. It rode on bespoke 16-inch alloys and featured air inlets ahead of the rear wheels to cool the engine and brakes. Despite its unconventional look, the Z13 remained instantly recognizable as a BMW, with a kidney grille flanked by twin headlights. Designers aimed to give it a mature appearance, even if it was thimble-sized. While the exterior borrowed cues from traditional BMW models, the interior was nothing short of revolutionary. Beyond the central driving position, the cabin featured several innovations. The CVT was controlled via a rotary switch to the right of the steering wheel, while a navigation display and built-in phone were positioned to the left. It even had a telefax machine onboard, along with a subwoofer mounted between the rear seats. Heat-insulating glass extended into the roof, making the cabin feel even more spacious. Rear passengers had individual armrests and reading lights mounted on the doors, designed to minimize disturbance to the driver. Folding the side seats made room for skis up to 6.5 feet (2 meters) long. With the rear seats upright and no front passenger seats, occupants could "stretch their legs out to an extent that cannot even be taken for granted in certain large luxury cars.' BMW didn't cut corners on safety either. The driver had an airbag, and the Z13's frame with its large crossmembers and thick B-pillars provided solid side-impact protection. Without a front-mounted engine, engineers had more freedom to maximize the crumple zone. Computer simulations in the early 1990s showed the Z13 met 'the world's toughest automobile safety standards.' The Z13 was the third vehicle (after the Z1 roadster and E1 electric hatchback) developed by BMW Technik GmbH, a wholly owned subsidiary founded in 1985. Essentially a skunkworks division, Technik produced numerous innovative concepts from the late 1980s to the early 2000s. It was renamed BMW Forschung und Technik GmbH in 2003 and continues to focus on research and development to this day. At the time, BMW emphasized the Z13 was 'not just a technical guinea-pig for experimental purposes, but a vision that could easily be turned into a reality.' A second prototype appeared in 1994, this time featuring a five-speed manual gearbox and a larger 1.2-liter engine sourced from the K1200 motorcycle. Even so, the city car never made it to production. Why? Later that same year, BMW acquired the rights to the Mini brand, and the rest is history. 1993 BMW Z13 concept 24 Share this Story Facebook X LinkedIn Flipboard Reddit WhatsApp E-Mail Got a tip for us? Trump shifts gears to EU after striking Japan deal

U.S. President Donald Trump has now set his sights on trade negotiations with the European Union, after announcing a framework agreement with Japan. "We have Europe coming in tomorrow, and the next day, we have some other ones coming in," Trump said late on Tuesday, without specifying details. Pressure has ramped up on EU and U.S. negotiators to come to an agreement by Aug. 1, with the Trump administration appearing intent on not changing the timeline on tariffs again. Levies of 30% on U.S.-bound imports from the EU are set to come into effect next month, with countermeasures from Brussels potentially following soon after. The first tranche of retaliatory tariffs from the EU, which already target imports from the U.S. worth 21 billion euros, are currently on hold until Aug. 6, while additional recourses are being prepared. But the U.S.-Japan agreement appears to have spread a positive sentiment among experts. "The Japan deal has significantly raised hopes that the EU might also be able to reach a trade deal," Deutsche Bank Research strategists and economists said in a Wednesday note. Katsuhiko Aiba, an economist at Citi, suggested in a separate note that the finer details of Japan's agreement with the U.S. could impact negotiations with the EU. "It is notable that auto tariffs were reduced without any cap on auto exports for a major auto exporting country, which may have implications for negotiations with the EU and South Korea," he pointed out. The U.S.-Japan deal includes a baseline tariff rate of 15%, with Reuters reporting that levies on autos will also be cut to this level — down from the 25% currently in place. Carving out exemptions or lower rates for some key sectors has long been on EU's trade agreement wish list, with analysts expecting that the bloc could accept a baseline tariff in exchange for such sectoral provisions. Road vehicles are among the top three exports from the EU to the U.S., according to the European Council. The pan-European Stoxx 600 index was trading 1% on Wednesday, roughly an hour after markets opened, with autos jumping by around 3.5%. While Europe is eagerly awaiting updates on trade negotiations with the U.S., European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President Antonio Costa are travelling to Asia. They are set to meet Japanese leaders on Wednesday before the EU-China summit on Thursday, with trade likely at top of their agenda. Trump's protectionist trade policies are exacerbating existing tensions between the EU and China, experts told CNBC. They noted Beijing's concerns that the U.S. may pressure the EU to sharpen its stance on China. EU Trade Commissioner Maros Sefcovic on Tuesday said in a post on X that he had "had an important video call" with Chinese Commerce Minister Wang Wentao, without supplying further details.
