Vidarbha becoming cancer capital, warns Datke

Nagpur: Raising alarm over the rising cancer cases in Vidarbha, BJP MLA Pravin Datke told the state assembly on Thursday that the region is fast becoming Maharashtra's "cancer capital" and called for immediate state-level intervention to improve awareness, and affordability, accessibility of cancer vaccines as well as diagnostic services.
"Vidarbha is becoming the cancer capital. This isn't just a health crisis, it's a wake-up call," Datke said during a legislative discussion, urging the govt to subsidise cervical and breast cancer vaccines and promote early diagnosis through govt hospitals.
Datke recalled the first community-driven initiative led by Nagpur-based corporator Rupa Rai under the CSR wing of Ankur Seeds and Birla Foundation. With support from Union minister Nitin Gadkari and CM Devendra Fadnavis, vaccines were made available to over 20,000 girls in Nagpur.
"The vaccine initially cost a fortune, but thanks to Adar Poonawalla's contribution of 1.25 lakh doses to the state, it's now available at Rs945," he noted.
The Nagpur Central MLA stressed that most citizens remain unaware or hesitant to take the vaccine due to myths and lack of outreach. "Cervical cancer is caused by a virus (HPV), and breast cancer is increasingly linked to genetics, hormonal treatment, and lifestyle changes.

Datke demanded that the state provide cervical and breast cancer vaccines under the MLA fund and recommended setting up a dedicated women's cancer hospital in Nagpur. He also asked the govt to make positron emission tomography (PET) scans — the essential first step in cancer detection — available free of cost at all govt hospitals.
"The test alone costs Rs25,000, which makes early detection unaffordable for most," he added.
He also appealed for municipal corporations and councils to reserve budgetary provisions specifically for cancer treatment, particularly for women. "Even though the govt has sanctioned Rs72 crore for a cancer hospital, only Rs15 crore was disbursed over the last three years," he said.
Responding to the concerns, state health minister Prakash Abitkar acknowledged the urgency.
"Awareness is critical. Many patients panic upon hearing the word 'cancer', when in reality, early detection improves outcomes significantly. We have already launched a strong campaign and are working on extending PET scan services under tertiary care," he assured.
Abitkar also promised to discuss the proposal to allow vaccine procurement through MLA funds with deputy CM and finance minister Ajit Pawar. "We are committed to improving access and will pursue all necessary projects for Nagpur," he said.

As the global demand for next-generation diabetes and weight-loss therapies surge, Indian pharmaceutical companies are stepping up preparations to roll out generic versions of semaglutide—a blockbuster GLP-1 receptor agonist—once patent expires around March 2026. The generic launches will be significant, as the prices for the Indian consumer are expected to come down significantly from the current ₹17,000-26000 (monthly), thereby expanding the patient coverage. Dr. Reddy's Laboratories (DRL), Cipla, Sun Pharma, and Mankind Pharma, and others are ramping up peptide manufacturing, forming device partnerships, and aligning regulatory strategies to capture a share of the global GLP-1 market, estimated to cross $150 billion by decade's end. Hyderabad-based DRL is planning Day 1 launches in India and Brazil, part of a 2026 global rollout across 87 countries. 'The semaglutide launch is very important to us,' said CEO Erez Israeli. The company aims to price its product below Novo Nordisk's current ₹17,000 monthly offering. DRL is also working on 26 GLP-1 therapies, backed by a ₹2,700 crore FY26 capex plan to scale peptide and biosimilar production. Cipla is targeting first-wave launches through a mix of in-house and partner filings. 'We see GLP-1 as one of the biggest therapy opportunities in the last five years,' said Umang Vohra, MD and global CEO at the post earnings call. The company is building parts of its GLP-1 supply chain internally while leveraging partnerships to ensure scalability. Cipla is also crafting an affordable strategy for India's price-sensitive market, betting that post-patent price erosion will be offset by volume growth. Mankind Pharma aims to launch both oral and injectable semaglutide generics and is advancing MKP10241, a novel oral obesity drug in Phase 2 trials in Australia. Sun Pharma, meanwhile, is progressing its investigational GLP-1 molecule Utreglutide, targeted for launch in four to five years. It has secured Phase III approval for semaglutide trials in India, even as it reports negligible impact of GLP-1 drugs on its existing diabetes portfolio. The race for a piece of India's ₹628 crore anti-obesity market, however, comes at a time when the Indian courts and drug regulator body are looking to monitor the unregulated use of weight loss drugs. According to sources, the Central Drug Standards Control Organisation (CDSCO) has initiated work to form a panel after the Delhi High Court in July 2025 asked it to consult experts and relevant stakeholders to look into concerns arising out of approval for drug combinations being sold in the market for weight loss. The directive came in response to a public interest litigation filed by fitness entrepreneur Jitendra Chouksey, who had raised concerns about the marketing approval of drugs such as semaglutide, tirzepatide and liraglutide for weight management, despite limited safety data and the absence of India-specific clinical trials. While disposing of the petition, the court asked the drug regulator to respond to the petitioner within three months. At present, India has two officially available semaglutide brands: Rybelsus (oral) and Wegovy (injectable), both from Danish major Novo Nordisk. Rybelsus is approved for treating Type 2 diabetes, while Wegovy was launched in June 2025 for weight management. US-based Eli Lilly's tirzepatide drug, Mounjaro, is also available in India for obesity management. Analysts say the semaglutide opportunity is also fuelling India's peptide manufacturing ecosystem. 'Formulation is no longer enough—companies need full-stack execution,' said Nirali Shah, Pharma Analyst at Ashika Group, pointing to DRL, Cipla, and Sun Pharma's early moves to secure pen delivery partnerships. Contract development and manufacturing organisations (CDMOs) like Anthem Biosciences and Syngene are positioning themselves to capture a larger share of the growing peptide segment. Device manufacturers, too, are scaling up to meet rising demand for injection pens. India's peptide CDMO market, currently valued at $80 million, is growing at a CAGR of 14 per cent and could become a global supplier base for GLP-1 drugs, said Nilaya Varma, CEO of Primus Partners.

When to start the conversation According to the University of Michigan Health C.S. Mott Children's Hospital National Poll on Children's Health, some of the common challenges that parents face are: choosing the right age to talk about the changes in their children's bodies, and also sex education. The poll found that parents are equally split in thinking it's best to start talking about puberty before age 10, at age 10, or when children are older. 'It's easy to assume a child is too young for conversations about puberty, but many parents are surprised to find their tween already showing signs of puberty or asking unexpected questions about body changes. Starting the conversation early gives parents a chance to shape the message in an age-appropriate way and help kids know what to expect, so they're not confused or anxious. If parents don't open the door to these talks, kids may get their information elsewhere, like from classmates, social media, or what they see on TV,' Mott Poll Co-Director Sarah Clark, M.P.H. , said, in a statement. One in five parents was worried about feeling embarrassed about having the conversation. One in six said they were anxious about saying the wrong thing. Among parents of children aged 10-12, a quarter said their child didn't want to talk about puberty. Parents of those aged 7-9, nearly a third, believed the kids were too young to understand. What to talk During the puberty talk, nearly half of the parents shared their puberty experiences with their children. Less than one-third of the parents shared that they have had the puberty conversation with their children. However, more than a third of the parents revealed that their parents never had this conversation with them. 'Whether they realize it or not, parents may bring their own experiences into their parenting approach. Many parents said they had little or no discussion of puberty when they were young. If puberty was treated as an awkward or embarrassing subject growing up, that can make it harder to know how to begin,' Clark said. Annual check-ups may also be a good opportunity for both parents and children to learn about puberty-related changes and ask the doctor questions. Recognizing puberty signs The poll revealed that about half of the parents were confident that they could recognise signs of puberty in their children. 60% of parents of children aged 10-12, and 17% parents of children aged 7-9 were able to notice these changes. However, fewer than a third of parents weren't sure what changes to look for. No more guesswork: Doctor busts common myths about women's health Some parents said that their children asked about their bodies, their parents' bodies, or other puberty-related topics. Clark added that parents should be open to discussing when such moments arise. For instance, when the child asks questions about puberty. 'Puberty isn't just about physical changes — it's also a time of emotional disruption, which can make open communication challenging. Many tweens feel embarrassed or uncomfortable talking with their parents about these changes.
