De Smith's upcoming book describes Aaron Rodgers as "isolated" and "dismissive"

NBC Sports02-07-2025
Former NFL Players Association executive director DeMaurice Smith has a book coming out in early August. And Daniel Kaplan of AwfulAnnouncing.com has gotten an advance PDF of Turf Wars.
There's some interesting stuff in there.
We had a little something back around the time of the Super Bowl. The full apparently book has a lot more something. Including some observations about former Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers, a vocal opponent of the 2020 Collective Bargaining Agreement.
'The god of Cheesehead Nation was isolated and dismissive,' Smith writes, regarding Rodgers's demeanor during a player meeting. 'He sat in the back row of the meeting room, issuing loud sighs before standing for a dramatic exit. An incredible quarterback, to be sure, but an even more impressive antagonist.'
Smith also says this about Rodgers: 'In August 2021, my phone chirped with a text from Aaron Rodgers. 'Can you call me?' it read. Could I not run into traffic instead?'
Smith and I now have something else in common, thanks to his book. If asked, Rodgers likely would suggest that people not waste their time 'reading crap like that.'

Chicago Bears spoil HBO's 'Hard Knocks' episode 3 for Buffalo Bills

The Chicago Bears completely spoiled HBO's 'Hard Knocks' episode 3 for the Buffalo Bills with their huge preseason victory at Soldier Field. Last summer, the Chicago Bears were featured on HBO's "Hard Knocks" during training camp and preseason. It had mixed reviews because it was a great insight into the team and what they were building, but it was also very "PG," which took away some of the authenticity. This summer, the Buffalo Bills are the focal point. It isn't usual for Super Bowl contenders to be the featured team, but it's a nice change of pace. The third episode, which aired Tuesday night, was spoiled by the Bears following their 38-0 thrashing of the Bills in the second preseason game Sunday night at Soldier Field. The first two-thirds of the episode had practices and meetings that Buffalo went through leading up to the game, including last Friday's joint practice with Chicago. But it wasn't a fun affair for the Bills when they were dominated by the Bears on national television. Yes, Chicago's starters began the game against the second-string Buffalo defenders, and Josh Allen didn't play. But the Bears were only up 7-0 by the time their starters exited. Chicago outscored Buffalo 31-0 from that point on, so there is plenty to be frustrated about if you're the Bills. Usually, the Bears are the team having their fun spoiled by others. This time, it was a change of pace to see Caleb Williams, Ben Johnson, and the entire team made to look good on camera. The only positive for Buffalo leaving Chicago is that the players were shown leaving Soldier Field with food from Lou Malnati's. Nobody can ever be that upset following a game that doesn't count if they can eat some Lou's pizza and salad. For the Bears, it is nice to see them spoil the Bills' fun, but they need to keep this momentum going. They're now headed to play another team that has the cameras on them a lot in the Kansas City Chiefs. There's nothing they need more than to see Williams end August on a high note. Raiders Urged to Not Trade For Potential-Laden Young Quarterback

The Las Vegas Raiders, a team that always seems to disappoint and frustrate its devoted fans, look a bit refreshed heading into the 2025 NFL season. They have brought in veteran quarterback Geno Smith, a two-time Pro Bowler, and new head coach Pete Carroll, who had coached Smith on the Seattle Seahawks. They also have a star in the making in tight end Brock Bowers and an absolute stud at running back in rookie Ashton Jeanty. However, Smith is 34 years of age and nearing his expiration date. If the Raiders are to set themselves up for sustained success, they will need a successor to Smith whose timeline is lined up with those of Bowers, Jeanty and star defensive end Maxx Crosby. Anthony Richardson, the 23-year-old quarterback who is currently a member of the Indianapolis Colts, could get traded after they named Daniel Jones their starter. Some feel Richardson is someone the Raiders should go after as their quarterback of the future. After all, he has impressive athleticism and made a name for himself as a dual-threat signal-caller while at the University of Florida. "If in fact [the Colts] do trade for him, or they make him available, I just don't see it, and I don't think it's a good decision for the Raiders," Myers said. "He still has not developed into an accurate quarterback. He still does not have that much experience." Myers isn't exactly confident that the quarterback will ever develop into a very good player. "I don't think that he's ever going to be a franchise quarterback," Myers added. "I hate that for him. I don't root for anyone to lose. I just don't see the mechanics. I don't see the development. "And worst-case scenario, I don't see the availability. He's just not available. And a lot of times, even his rookie year, when he only played four games, that's because he tried to run and tried to run guys over like he did at Florida. You can't do that in the National Football League." Read more: Top 5 Landing Spots for Bengals' Trey Hendrickson Amid Trade Revelation Richardson's stock rose at the 2023 NFL Scouting Combine as he reportedly did very well during the interview process. But in two pro seasons, he has thrown for more interceptions (13) than touchdowns (11) and has completed just 50.6% of his pass attempts. Even worse, he has played in only 15 of a possible 34 games due to multiple injuries. There is a school of thought that Richardson just needs a change of scenery to blossom. But he hasn't shown any tangible proof that he's ready to explode in the right situation. The Raiders haven't won a single playoff game since the 2002 season, when they lost in the Super Bowl to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. They have made the playoffs only twice since, and Raider Nation is beyond antsy for the franchise to return to its old glory of decades past. Buccaneers' Possible Trade for 4-Time Pro Bowler Receives Update

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have assembled what could be a dark-horse team in the NFC, especially thanks to a couple of notable additions on defense during the offseason. But for them to seriously contend for their third Super Bowl championship, they could use a little more help. A few days ago, news broke that the Cincinnati Bengals were starting to listen to offers for Trey Hendrickson, their star veteran defensive end. A number of teams reportedly were showing interest in trading for the four-time Pro Bowler, and Buccaneers fans were undoubtedly intrigued by the possibility of their favorite team landing him. A Sporting News contributor asked Fox Sports Buccaneers reporter Greg Auman on X (formerly Twitter) about what Tampa Bay would have to give up to land Handrickson. Auman bluntly responded that the team isn't trading for the 30-year-old. Bucs aren't trading for Hendrickson. — Greg Auman (@gregauman) August 17, 2025 The Bengals will almost surely ask for the sun and the moon in order to unload Hendrickson, who is heading into the final year of his contract. The only reason he could be on the move is that contract extension talks have gone nowhere. He's the type of player who could almost single-handedly elevate a number of teams into the league's elite class. Hendrickson, 30, is coming off back-to-back seasons with exactly 17.5 sacks, and he's been a Pro Bowler each of the last four years. After giving out lucrative extensions to quarterback Joe Burrow and wide receivers Ja'Marr Chase and Tee Higgins, it will be hard for them to afford to extend another star such as Hendrickson. While he posted at least 11 sacks for four consecutive seasons from 2020 to 2023, the team will need some more pressure off the edges in order to truly enter the Super Bowl mix. It finished 16th in points allowed, 26th in interceptions forced and 29th in passing yards given up during the 2024 season. While the Buccaneers' offense looks fairly explosive, defense is the key to winning championships, and their defense isn't looking outstanding at the moment.
