US natgas lower on near-record output

NEW YORK: US natural gas futures slid about 3% to a two-month low on Wednesday on near-record output, stagnant gas flows to liquefied natural gas (LNG) export plants, and ample amounts of gas in storage.
Front-month gas futures for August delivery on the New York Mercantile Exchange fell 8.7 cents, or 2.7%, to $3.165 per million British thermal units, putting the contract on track for its lowest close since May 19.
Despite hotter than normal weather this summer, analysts projected record output should allow energy firms to keep injecting more gas into storage than usual in coming weeks. Gas stockpiles were already about 6% above normal levels for this time of year.
The US National Hurricane Center (NHC) said a tropical system off the east coast of Florida had a 10% chance of strengthening into a tropical cyclone over the next week as it moves into the Gulf of Mexico.
Even though Gulf storms can boost prices by knocking some gas production out of service, analysts have noted that they are more likely to cut demand and prices by knocking out power to millions of homes and businesses, which reduces the amount of gas electric generators need to burn, and shutting LNG export plants.
Only about 2% of all US gas comes from the federal offshore Gulf of Mexico.
LSEG said average gas output in the Lower 48 US states rose to 107.3 billion cubic feet per day so far in July from a monthly record high of 106.4 bcfd in June.
Meteorologists forecast the weather in the Lower 48 would remain mostly hotter than normal through at least August 7. The hottest days of the summer are expected early next week.
Temperatures across the country will average around 81 degrees Fahrenheit (27.2 degrees Celsius) on July 27 and 82 F on July 28-29. If correct, that will exceed the summer's current hottest daily average of 80 F on June 24 but would remain below the daily average record high of 83 F on July 20, 2022, according to data from financial firm LSEG going back to 2018.
LSEG forecast average gas demand in the Lower 48, including exports, will rise from 105.9 bcfd this week to 110.1 bcfd next week. Those forecasts were similar to LSEG's outlook on Tuesday.
The average amount of gas flowing to the eight big US LNG export plants rose to 15.7 bcfd so far in July as liquefaction units at some slowly exited maintenance reductions and unexpected outages.

Global LNG: Asian spot prices inch up on geopolitical, supply concerns

SINGAPORE: Asian spot liquefied natural gas (LNG) prices inched up after two previous weeks of declines as geopolitical risk factors including U.S. threats of sanctions on energy producer Russia, and supply concerns lent support. The average LNG price for September delivery into Northeast Asia was at $12.10 per million British thermal units (mmBtu), up from $11.90/mmBtu last week, industry sources estimated. Geopolitics was back on stage with the threat of sanctions on offtakers of Russian oil and gas, potentially tightening the market if LNG is purchased elsewhere, said Klaas Dozeman, market analyst at Brainchild Commodity Intelligence, but added it remains unclear how things will turn out. U.S. President Donald Trump has threatened sanctions on both Russia and buyers of its exports unless Moscow makes progress toward ending the war in Ukraine by August 8. Dozeman added that a trade agreement the U.S. struck with the European Union remained supportive, as the EU pledged to buy$250 billion of U.S. energy supplies per year. Additionally boosting prices, this week's earthquake in eastern Russia triggering tsunami alerts and a slower than expected ramp-up at LNG Canada added to supply concerns, said analysts. Global LNG: Asian spot prices slip to ten-week low on tepid demand, rising supply 'Still, any upside is capped by weak cooling demand across South and Southeast Asia, and elevated LNG inventory and underground gas storage in China,' said Kpler analyst Go Katayama. In Europe, S&P Global Commodity Insights assessed its daily North West Europe LNG Marker price benchmark for cargoes delivered in September on an ex-ship basis at $11.347/mmBtu on July 31, a $0.45/mmBtu discount to the September futures price at the Dutch TTF hub. Argus assessed the price at $11.39/mmBtu, while Spark Commodities assessed it at $11.374/mmBtu. 'Continued strong pipeline (gas) flows and high German wind generation will suppress bullish impulses. However, LNG supply tightness from Italy's Rovigo maintenance and intensified Egyptian procurement activity may introduce upward risk,' said Kpler's Katayama. One LNG cargo was diverted from the Netherlands to Egypt, said Argus head of LNG pricing Martin Senior, adding that high temperatures in Egypt could support demand for additional cargoes. The U.S. arbitrage to Northeast Asia via the Cape of Good Hope widened this week to continue incentivising U.S. cargo deliveries to Europe, said Spark Commodities analyst Qasim Afghan. The arbitrage via Panama, which had pointed to Asia for almost two weeks, is now closed and pointing to Europe. In LNG freight, Atlantic rates rose to $35,500/day on Friday, while Pacific rates declined for a fifth straight week to $33,500/day, he added.

India's ITC tops profit view on higher cigarette, consumer goods sales

Indian conglomerate ITC reported a slightly better-than-expected first-quarter profit on Friday, buoyed by higher sales of cigarettes and packaged food, including instant noodles. The company posted a standalone profit of 49.12 billion rupees ($561.68 million) for the quarter ended June 30, slightly down from 49.18 billion rupees a year earlier. That was, however, just above analysts' average estimate of 49.1 billion rupees, according to data compiled by LSEG. Revenue from its cigarettes division, its largest segment, grew 8%, while its other consumer goods business grew 5%, partly supported by steady rural demand. Dabur India beats first-quarter profit view on rural demand strength, retail expansion This lifted its overall first-quarter revenue by nearly 20% to 210.59 billion rupees. Rural demand recovery that started two years ago, driven by strong harvests and welfare schemes, has cushioned the impact of sluggish urban sales. ITC has been steadily expanding its rural presence over the last three years by growing its network of local distributors by nearly 40%.

India's GlaxoSmithKline Pharma posts first revenue drop in over two years

Indian drugmaker GlaxoSmithKline Pharma reported its first quarterly revenue decline in more than two years on Friday, leading to its shares declining the most in nearly four months. The Indian unit of British drugmaker GSK Plc reported a 2% decline in its revenue from operations to 8.05 billion rupees ($92 million)for the first quarter ended June 30. GlaxoSmithKline Pharma said its performance during the quarter was 'below anticipated levels,' as it was hurt by 'external factors such as seasonal disruptions'. The stock slumped 5.5% after results and was on track for its worst day since early April. This is the company's first revenue drop since March 2023, when it grappled with lower prices of its key drugs due to the government's pricing cap. Separately, in May, it had a temporary production disruption due to a fire at one of its contract manufacturing facilities, but did not disclose whether there was a financial impact from it. Its quarterly profit climbed 12.5% on-year to 2.05 billion rupees as the company kept a tight lid on its expenses. Total expenses for the quarter dropped 5.2%.
