Woman killed in overnight San Leandro shooting
The San Leandro Police Department responded at 11:11 p.m. to East 14th and Williams streets on the report of a shooting. First responders found a woman who was shot at least once in the torso. She was rushed to a local hospital, where she was pronounced deceased.
The victim's identity has not been released.
According to authorities, the woman was with her boyfriend and walking her two dogs down East 14th Street when a suspect pulled up and got out of his car.
'After a brief interaction, the suspect drew a firearm and shot the victim once in the torso,' San Leandro police said.
The suspect then got back into his car and took off. The woman's boyfriend and the dogs were uninjured in the shooting. The dogs were taken by police service technicians to a temporary shelter, SLPD Lieutenant Abe Teng said.
On Friday morning, San Leandro police announced that Rohith Sunil, 21, of San Jose, was detained by officers in Dublin after finding him in possession of a firearm. Detectives connected him to the shooting by descriptions of the suspect and the vehicle, police said.
Sunil was arrested for suspicion of murder after more evidence was obtained by detectives, SLPD said.
Police have not released any possible motives for the killing.
The killing comes just over a month after Ryan M. Christie was gunned down while walking his dog along Euclid Avenue near East 14th Street. According to San Leandro police, no connection has been made between the two homicides or the suspects in each case, and there is 'no basis to believe they are part of a mounting pattern.'

Odeh Hathalin, who was a consultant on 'No Other Land,' a film that documents Israeli settler and military attacks on the West Bank community of Masafer Yatta, was shot in the village of Umm al-Khair, in that same community. 'He was standing in front of the community settler in his village when a settler fired a bullet that pierced his chest and took his life. This is how Israel erases us – one life at a time,' Adra wrote in a post on Instagram. Last month, Hathalin was detained at San Francisco International Airport upon arrival and deported after immigration officials revoked his visa, local media reported. He had been invited to visit a California synagogue as part of an interfaith speaking tour. CNN reported in March that settlers had also targeted Hamdan Ballal, another co-director of 'No Other Land,' outside his home in the village of Susya, also in Masser Yatta. Ballal, who had recently returned from Los Angeles to accept an Oscar for the film, told CNN he thought the group of settlers would kill him. He was detained by Israeli soldiers, handcuffed, blindfolded and beaten. Teenage motorcyclist killed in western Minnesota crash
A teenage motorcyclist was killed in a crash in western Minnesota Monday afternoon, authorities said. The crash happened around 2:15 p.m. at southbound Highway 23 and Travis Road in Marshall, according to the Minnesota State Patrol. The 16-year-old boy driving the motorcycle died at the scene. The other driver, a 67-year-old woman in a Subaru, was not hurt. The patrol released few other details about the crash. The teenager has not been publicly identified. Marshall is about 150 miles west of Minneapolis.

Fetterman cheers ICE arrests of illegal alien child sex offenders, Luna calls for death penalty
Sen. John Fetterman, D-Pa., expressed support for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement's apprehension of illegal alien child sex offenders, while Rep. Anna Paulina Luna, R-Fla., advocated for the individuals to face the death penalty. ICE noted in a Monday press release that it "arrested 214 illegal aliens for immigration offenses in the Houston area in the past six months who have been charged or convicted of a sex offense involving a minor." "I don't support or agree with all of ICE's tactics or actions. I do fully support moves like these. This makes our nation more secure and all our children safer," Fetterman said in a post on X. Responding to the news about the ICE arrests, Luna said in a post on X, "Skip deportation. Go directly to the death penalty. Do not pass go. Do not collect $200." According to the ICE press release, one of the individuals arrested was "Jose Guadalupe Meza, a 40-year-old, four-time deported criminal alien from Mexico who was arrested June 24 and has been convicted of theft and sexual assault of a child. ICE removed Guadalupe Meza to Mexico June 25." The news comes amid the Trump administration's crackdown on border and immigration enforcement. Fetterman has previously expressed support for ICE's work, describing any calls for the abolition of the agency as "inappropriate" as well as "outrageous."
