Woman killed in overnight San Leandro shooting

SAN LEANDRO, Calif. (KRON) — San Leandro police are investigating a homicide after a woman was shot and killed Thursday night while walking her dogs with her boyfriend. The San Leandro Police Department responded at 11:11 p.m. to East 14th and Williams streets on the report of a shooting. First responders found a woman who was shot at least once in the torso. She was rushed to a local hospital, where she was pronounced deceased. The victim's identity has not been released. According to authorities, the woman was with her boyfriend and walking her two dogs down East 14th Street when a suspect pulled up and got out of his car. 'After a brief interaction, the suspect drew a firearm and shot the victim once in the torso,' San Leandro police said. The suspect then got back into his car and took off. The woman's boyfriend and the dogs were uninjured in the shooting. The dogs were taken by police service technicians to a temporary shelter, SLPD Lieutenant Abe Teng said. On Friday morning, San Leandro police announced that Rohith Sunil, 21, of San Jose, was detained by officers in Dublin after finding him in possession of a firearm. Detectives connected him to the shooting by descriptions of the suspect and the vehicle, police said. Sunil was arrested for suspicion of murder after more evidence was obtained by detectives, SLPD said. Police have not released any possible motives for the killing. The killing comes just over a month after Ryan M. Christie was gunned down while walking his dog along Euclid Avenue near East 14th Street. According to San Leandro police, no connection has been made between the two homicides or the suspects in each case, and there is 'no basis to believe they are part of a mounting pattern.' San Leandro home-invasion robbery leads to several arrests

(KRON) — Several arrests have been made following a home-invasion robbery in early May, said the San Leandro Police Department. BART Police K9 tracks down gun a mile from Oakland crime scene SLPD said that its officers responded to the 14700 block of Bancroft Avenue, just after 5 a.m. on May 4, for a report of a home-invasion. Police said that 'two masked suspects broke into the home and forced three victims into a bedroom while they ransacked the rest of the house for electronics and cash.' The duo also stole and later abandoned a 2025 Tesla Model Y vehicle, belonging to one of the victims, according to police. SLPD said detectives assigned to its Crimes Against Persons Unit developed leads to identify the suspects as Isaiah Ruiz-Sandoval, 24, and Isaias Jimenez-Garcia, 20, both of Oakland, and obtain arrest warrants. Police say officers conducted surveillance on Wednesday — with the assistance of an Alameda County Sheriff's Office air unit — as Ruiz-Sandoval and an associate, Julian Solorio, 25, of San Francisco, drove throughout Oakland 'committing multiple auto burglaries of parked vehicles.' Police said the pair took off when officers tried to apprehend them then ditched their car in the 4600 block of Penniman Avenue. Solorio was eventually located and arrested while Ruiz-Sandoval was able to evade capture. Police said Ruiz-Sandoval and another individual, identified as Javier Romero-Flores, 21, of Oakland, was arrested on Thursday — with the help of Alameda County Sheriff's Office deputies and a K-9 unit — after officers interrupted three suspects during a burglary in progress at an occupied residence in the 1400 block of Trojan Avenue. Later Thursday, SLPD said detectives located Jimenez-Garcia, the last wanted suspect of the May 4 home-invasion robbery, in the 2800 block of Baumberg Avenue in Hayward. 'Search warrants were executed at the homes of Ruiz-Sandoval and Jimenez-Garcia, and evidence linking them to the home-invasion robbery was recovered,' said San Leandro police in a news release. 'A case like this showcases how an investigation can quickly develop and branch into other cases involving new suspects,' added Lieutenant Abe Teng of SLPD. 'More importantly, it also affirms the tenacity of our staff and their dedication to bring these suspects to justice.' San Leandro police partnered with the Oakland Police Department and the Alameda County Sheriff's Office in the investigation of these cases. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. SLPD swears in newest officer, hiring for police chief

Apr. 4—SOAP LAKE — The Soap Lake Police Department swore in its newest officer, Yuriy Bezzubenko at the Soap Lake City Council meeting Wednesday. As of now, SLPD has four officers including Acting Chief Robert Geates. In addition to Geates, officers include Bezzubenko, Jacob Lennhouts and Mikel Bias. Geates said there are two officers currently attending the academy which will help bring the city's police force up and help it reach its goals in serving the community. Bezzubenko said he understands the importance of that commitment and responsibility to serve the public in good faith. "I'd like to say today is more than just a ceremony," Bezzubenko said. "It's a commitment, a commitment to serve and protect, to uphold the values of justice and integrity. Sitting here, I'm reminded that wearing this badge is not just an honor. It's a responsibility. It's a difficult responsibility, but I accept it, and as well as stepping into a role that demands courage, compassion and unwavering dedication." Bezzubenko speaks both Russian and Ukrainian, which he said is important for communication and building trust with the Soap Lake community. Soap Lake is known for having a fairly large Slavic community that includes a Baptist church. "I hope that my ability to speak these languages will help strengthen their relationships within our diverse community and ensure that everyone feels heard," Bezzubenko said. "Soap Lake is more than just a place. It's a community, and from this day forward, I dedicate myself to keeping it safe." Bezzubenko was born in Ukraine and immigrated to the United States when he was 13 years old, he said. He then spent most of his life in North Carolina. He started his career in the Marine Corps, where he served for almost four years. He left the Marines as a sergeant. He then served as a police sergeant in Hoonah, Alaska. He said he has about five years of law enforcement experience. "I pledge to serve this community with fairness, to stand for those who cannot stand for themselves, and to uphold the law with respect and integrity," Bezzubenko said. "I would like to first and foremost, thank the mayor as well as (Acting) Chief Geates, the council members and the community as well for giving me an opportunity to be of service to Soap Lake and the police department as well." The department is also hiring a Chief of Police after former Chief Ryan Cox was terminated for alleged misconduct. However, the termination is being appealed by Cox via the city's Civil Service Commision. The chief position pays $155,000 to $175,000 with a $5,000 sign on bonus and an additional $5,000 after one year of service. For more information about the position call 509-246-1211 or visit
