Jeffrey Epstein accomplice Ghislaine Maxwell is moved to a minimum security prison in Texas
No reason was given for the move but it comes a week after a top Justice Department official met with Maxwell to ask her questions about Epstein, who died in a New York jail in 2019 while awaiting trial for sex trafficking underage girls. "We can confirm Ghislaine Maxwell is in the custody of the Federal Bureau of Prisons at the Federal Prison Camp (FPC) Bryan in Bryan, Texas," a Bureau of Prisons spokesman said. The Texas prison houses 635 female inmates and is a minimum security facility.
Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, President Donald Trump's former personal lawyer, interviewed Maxwell for two days at a Florida courthouse last week in a highly unusual meeting between a convicted felon and high-ranking Justice official. Blanche has declined so far to say what was discussed but Maxwell's lawyer, David Markus, said she answered every question she was asked. Maxwell has offered to testify before Congress about Epstein if given immunity and has also reportedly been seeking a pardon from Trump, a one-time close friend of Epstein.
The former British socialite is serving a 20-year sentence after being convicted in 2021 of recruiting underage girls for Epstein.
Trump is facing mounting demands from Democrats and many of his supporters to be more transparent about the case of the wealthy and well-connected Epstein. Trump's conspiracy-minded supporters have been obsessed with the Epstein case for years and have been up in arms since the FBI and Justice Department said last month that Epstein had committed suicide while in jail, did not blackmail any prominent figures and did not keep a "client list."
The president raised further questions this week as he told reporters he fell out with Epstein after the financier "stole" female employees from the spa at Trump's Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida. One of those girls was Virginia Giuffre, who accused Epstein of using her as a sex slave and committed suicide at her home in Australia in April.

UK says first migrants held under return deal with France
The agreement, which came into force on Wednesday, seeks to curb record levels of irregular Channel crossings, which are causing discontent in Britain and helping fuel the rise of the hard-right Reform UK party. "Detentions began for those who arrived in the UK on a small boat yesterday lunchtime (Wednesday). They will be held in immigration removal centres pending their removal," the interior ministry said in a statement. The detained individuals are expected to be removed to France in the "coming weeks", it added. Under the arrangement -- for now a pilot scheme set to run until June 2026 -- irregular migrants arriving on UK shores can be detained and then returned to France if they are deemed ineligible for asylum. In exchange, London will accept an equal number of migrants from France who can apply for a visa to enter the UK via an online platform, giving priority to nationalities most vulnerable to smugglers and people with ties in Britain. If approved, they will have a three-month period in which they can enter the UK and apply for asylum. 'Important step' "If you break the law to enter this country, you will face being sent back. When I say I will stop at nothing to secure our borders, I mean it," Prime Minister Keir Starmer wrote on X after the announcement of the detentions. His government will refer the detainees' cases to France within three days, and the French authorities will be expected to respond within 14 days. The whole process of returning someone could take three months and the UK will cover all the costs until the migrant is handed over, according to the treaty. Unaccompanied minors will not be eligible for deportation under the scheme. The reciprocal process to allow migrants to submit an expression of interest to come the UK also began on Thursday. Applicants must upload a passport or other identity documents as well as a recent photograph and will have to pass further security checks and biometric controls. Interior minister Yvette Cooper said that the detentions "send a message to every migrant currently thinking of paying organised crime gangs to go to the UK that they will be risking their lives and throwing away their money if they get into a small boat. "Criminal gangs have spent seven years embedding themselves along our border and it will take time to unravel them, but these detentions are an important step towards undermining their business model and unravelling the false promises they make," she added. Refugee charities have criticised the deal, urging the British government to provide more safe and legal routes for asylum seekers instead. The number of migrants making the dangerous journey in flimsy dinghies this year crossed 25,000 at the end of July, the highest tally ever at this point in the year. In recent weeks, anti-immigration demonstrators and counter-protesters have clashed outside hotels housing asylum seekers in Britain, with some marches turning violent.

Epstein victims express fear and exhaustion over handling of files
Women who say they were abused by Jeffrey Epstein are feeling anxious about the US Justice Department's handling of records related to the convicted sex offender. Some of the victims are backing the release of grand jury transcripts which they say is long overdue for greater transparency, while others have expressed concern over potential breaches of their privacy as well as question the motivations of the Trump administration. In letters addressed to federal judges in New York this week, several victims personally or via their attorneys said they would support the declassification of grand jury transcripts and testimonies related to the disgraced financier's trial, contingent on some conditions. They said they'd be open to those records, which led to the criminal convictions of Jeffrey Epstein and his British socialite former girlfriend and accomplice, Ghislaine Maxwell, if the government agreed to allow them to review the material and redact sensitive information. The Justice Department, led by Attorney General Pam Bondi, has asked the court to take the rare steps of unsealing those documents, as pressure mounted on the Trump administration from supporters and critics alike, with many believing the US president may be personally implicated. Trump had promised in his campaign trail to 'uncover secrets of the deep state', among them, conspiracies surrounding Epstein, whose files and trial proceedings have been largely sealed since his conviction. US media outlets reported that Trump, once a close friend of Epstein's, was named in several documents, leading the public to believe that the administration's decision to not release any new evidence despite promises to do so, may be politically motivated to protect Trump. 'What you have done and continue to do is eating at me day after day as you help to perpetuate this story indefinitely.' 'This is all very exhausting,' added another victim in a letter anonymously submitted to a federal judge on Wednesday. Last month, the Justice Department announced it would not release additional files related to the Epstein sex trafficking investigation, sparking domestic uproar. The decision was later reversed under pressure and grand jury transcripts were requested to be released. Judges who will decide whether to release the transcripts then asked victims to share their views on the matter. An attorney for Maxwell however has strictly opposed the release of those records which he says would be a violation of traditional grand jury secrecy. 'Jeffrey Epstein is dead. Ghislaine Maxwell is not,' said Oscar Markus, Maxwell's lawyer. He also stressed that the disgraced socialite must have a say in the matter, stating that 'the defendant is alive, her legal options are viable, and her due process rights remain.'
