Akal Takht declares Punjab minister Bains as 'tankhaiya' over dance performances at Srinagar event
Pronouncing the verdict from the Takht in the Golden Temple complex in Amritsar, five Sikh high priests - led by Jathedar of Akal Takht Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargaj - said that Bains will have to walk barefoot from the Golden Temple to Gurdwara Guru Ke Mahal, located roughly half a kilometre away in a narrow street.
He has also been instructed to visit Baba Bakala, a holy town near Amritsar and Gurdwara Sis Ganj Sahib in Delhi. He has been asked to do a two-day 'sewa' (voluntary service), of cleaning shoes and sweeping the premises of Anandpur Sahib. He has also been directed to offer 'deg' of Rs 1,100 and participate in 'ardas' seeking forgiveness.

The National Law University, Delhi, has commenced the registrations for AILET 2026. Union Home Minister Amit Shah Friday accused the Congress and the RJD of 'defending infiltrators' for vote-bank politics by criticising the special intensive revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar. 'Rahul Gandhi should stop this vote-bank politics,' Shah said. He claimed: 'This voter list purification is not happening for the first time, your great-grandfather (former PM Jawaharlal) Nehru had initiated it. Since you are losing election after election, you are giving excuses in advance for the Bihar polls.' Shah said: 'The Election Commission released the draft list and neither the Congress nor the RJD submitted a single objection. So who exactly are you defending? Those who come from Bangladesh and take away jobs meant for Bihar's youth?' Targeting RJD chief Lalu Prasad, he said: 'If Lalu and his company want votes of infiltrators, the people of Bihar will not accept them.' Shah vowed that 'infiltrators' would be removed from the voter list. He also accused the Congress of ignoring national security during its tenure. 'Under Congress rule, bomb blasts would happen and terrorists would escape to Pakistan, no one dared to question them. The temple project is part of the Ramayana circuit, a broader initiative linking Ayodhya, Sitamarhi and Janakpur in Nepal, to facilitate religious tourism and pilgrimage routes. On July 1, the Bihar cabinet sanctioned `882.87 crore for the integrated development of the temple premises. Out of this, `137 crore is for the renovation of the existing temple and its surroundings, `728 crore for tourism-related infrastructure and `16 crore for a decade of comprehensive maintenance. At another cabinet meeting on July 29, a revised estimate of `165.57 crore was also cleared for the acquisition of an additional 50 acres, beyond the 17 acres currently available at Punaura Dham temple premises. The new land will be used for developing tourism infrastructure and related facilities.

UP man acquitted in dowry case after wife's suicide, Allahabad HC orders Rs 2 lakh compensation for him
The Allahabad High Court has directed that Rs 2 lakh be paid to a man acquitted in a dowry-related harassment case, observing that he was subjected to 'vexatious criminal prosecution,' while dismissing an Uttar Pradesh government appeal against his acquittal. The order came on an appeal filed under Section 378(3) of the CrPC challenging the acquittal of Dhirendra Kumar, whose wife, Pinki Jaiswal, was found dead in their house in March 2022. An alleged suicide note recovered by police cited 'academic stress' and stated neither her parents nor in-laws were responsible. The trial court acquitted Kumar on July 4, 2024. The State argued the acquittal was 'misconceived' and sought leave to appeal. Kumar's counsel countered that the trial court had correctly evaluated evidence, including the suicide note produced by the prosecution. Quoting Section 378 of the CrPC, the court noted that directions to file appeals against acquittals must be exercised 'sparingly and with circumspection' and only on 'substantial and compelling reasons… good and sufficient grounds… very strong circumstances, a distorted conclusion and apparent mistake.' Mere reproduction of these phrases, it added, is not enough; reasons must be 'clear and explicit' in the application for leave to appeal. The bench said Kumar, who got an 'honourable acquittal,' must be paid Rs 2 lakh within 30 days 'as just and proper compensation for vexatious criminal prosecution.' The FIR, lodged by the deceased's brother at Sikandrabad police station, Bulandshahr, accused Kumar of dowry harassment under IPC sections 498-A, 304-B, 316, 506, and provisions of the Dowry Prohibition Act. The brother alleged that Kumar refused to bear her food and education expenses, disowned her pregnancy, demanded more dowry, and threatened to kill her. The suicide note, however, said she was pursuing an and ended her life due to 'study stress.' The postmortem found death due to asphyxia from hanging and confirmed she was not pregnant. Police filed a chargesheet after investigation.
