Kidnapped two-week-old infant rescued in KZN, woman arrested
RUSA discovered baby Owami Lonathando Sindane at approximately 09h15 near the Westville Pavilion Shopping Centre in KwaZulu-Natal.
Officers quickly reunited her with her mother, Bongiwe Sindane, who had reported the kidnapping to RUSA at around 22h00 the previous night.
Within eleven hours, RUSA received 34 tip-offs from various locations across South Africa. Including Pietermaritzburg, Limpopo, Cape Town and Johannesburg.
The leads enabled the team to focus their search on Chesterville in the early hours of Monday.
RUSA deployed ground units and aerial surveillance to contain the area, where officers spotted a woman acting suspiciously while carrying a newborn.
Officers confronted the suspect and found her in possession of the missing baby.
They arrested a 21-year-old woman in connection with the abduction and took her into custody on the spot.
Due to growing tension among residents—some of whom requested to confront her—RUSA removed the woman from the area for her safety.
The police later detained her at the Family Violence, Child Protection, and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit at SAPS Cato Manor, where the baby's mother positively identified her.
During interrogation, the suspect confessed to kidnapping the infant after suffering a miscarriage on 24 April.
She reportedly met Bongiwe Sindane at a local clinic and devised a plan to abduct the child in order to deceive her boyfriend into believing the baby was his.
Disturbingly, the suspect admitted that she had only given baby Owami water and had not fed her any formula milk since the abduction.
SAPS has taken over the case for further investigation. Authorities expect the suspect to appear in court soon on charges of kidnapping and child endangerment.

Muizenberg mass murders: At least seven killed within three days
Police have launched an investigation following the gruesome discovery of three bodies following a mass shooting in Muizenberg, Western Cape. The bodies of the victims – aged between 20 and 37 – were discovered at approximately 05:30 on Mountain Road, each having sustained fatal gunshot wounds. 15-year-old learner arrested after stabbing schoolmate in KZN
A 15-year-old learner was arrested after stabbing his schoolmate in KwaMhlanga, KwaZulu-Natal (KZN), on Thursday, 14 August 2025. Police received a call about a student who was stabbed and needed an ambulance. They immediately rushed to the school and found the victim lying face up with a stab wound on his left chest. The fight commenced after school between the two learners and proceeded to the street next to the school, where the suspect took out a knife and stabbed the victim in the chest. The suspect fled the scene and was traced to his residence, where he was arrested. The knife used to carry out the murder was found in the possession of the suspect's friend, who was taken in for further questioning. Emergency Medical Services (EMS) confirmed the death of the student. Lieutenant Colonel Jabu Ndubane confirmed to The South African that the cause of the fight is unknown yet. Acting Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Major General (Dr)Zeph Mkhwanazi, expressed concern about youth violence. He said, 'It is heartbreaking that such a tragic incident involved children. Learners should be focused on their studies, not violence. We urge parents, schools, and communities to work together to address the root cause of youth violence.' A man was arrested for allegedly kidnapping and assaulting a 37-year-old man. The suspect accused the victim of stealing his cell phone before assaulting and forcing him into the boot. Community members recalled seeing the 49-year-old suspect driving a white Mercedes-Benz sedan forcing someone into the boot of the car at Naledi Mall, Phuthaditjhaba. Investigations led the police to a house in Phuthaditjhaba, where they found the vehicle parked in the yard. The police then instructed the suspect to open the boot, where they discovered the victim. 'Police discovered the alleged victim with visible injuries, including an open wound to his right cheek and lower lip,' read the police statement. Rapper Sean Kingston jailed following luxury goods fraud case
A federal court sentenced Sean Kingston, the Jamaican-born rapper, to three and a half years in prison for his involvement in a fraud scheme. The sentence was handed down on Friday in a South Florida courtroom. Kingston, aged 35, expressed remorse and stated he had learned from his actions.
