KUALA LUMPUR: Nineties hip-hop group, 4U2C, has appointed an authorised party and followed the correct channels to ensure no copyright issues arise regarding the songs to be performed at the WE 4U2C Live in Concert event on Sept 15. This was confirmed by group leader, Datuk AC Mizal, when asked to comment on the statement by composer and full copyright holder of 4U2C's songs, Man Senoi, and his wife, Mama Rap. In their statement, Man Senoi and Mama Rap claimed they had not been contacted by any party regarding the concert's organisation. "I don't want to comment on the matter because I haven't had any contact with them for a long time," AC Mizal told Harian Metro. "My focus right now is solely on this concert. All other matters will be handled by the responsible parties." Without revealing who would be handling the issue, AC Mizal said that 4U2C would also perform three new songs, which he believed would not pose any problems. "We have many songs to perform, including three new ones, and so forth," he said. "So, for me, there's no problem as everything is being managed well by the relevant parties." 4U2C, comprising AC Mizal along with Azam, Aren, Yanz, Rinz, Lanz, and Charlie, is currently undergoing intensive training sessions to refine their performances. "We've already started training sessions," he said. "The training is quite rigorous, involving dancing and singing, and focuses a lot on the overall performance aspect." The WE 4U2C Live in Concert, with a 1990s theme, will feature more than 20 popular 4U2C songs and will take place at the Idea Live Arena in Petaling Jaya. Earlier, Man Senoi and Mama Rap informed Harian Metro that they held the full copyright to 4U2C's songs but were not informed about the concert's organisation. The two also shared details about 4U2C's beginnings, which they founded, and the struggles they faced to ensure the group could establish itself in the country's music industry.

KUALA LUMPUR: Composer and producer Man Senoi, and his wife Mama Rap, who also owns the copyright to 4U2C's songs, claim they have not been contacted by anyone regarding the WE 4U2C Live In Concert event, set to take place at the Idea Live Arena in Petaling Jaya on Sept 15. Man Senoi, whose real name is Othman Masri, 72, and his wife, Ramziah Mohamed Noor, 62, said they should have been informed as they hold the full copyright to a collection of songs from the popular 1990s hip-hop group. "They signed as artistes under our company, Zman Production. We gathered them and held auditions. Before that, they sang rock songs," he told Harian Metro. He added, "When we had all seven members, we started looking for a record company but were rejected. Instead, they asked if we could sell the rap concept. Our lives were a real struggle. We sold gold chains to pay for their clothes and training costs. We did some initial publicity in the newspapers, and fans started going crazy for 4U2C." Man Senoi and Mama Rap said that initial orders of 50,000 units boosted their confidence to release 4U2C's debut album in 1992. "At that time, there was no name yet. We eventually agreed on the name 4U2C, and it would be under our full management, with BMG record company as a third-party distributor," he explained. "After the second album, there was friction between us, which ended in court with our side winning. However, they continued to play our songs in their shows, even though the copyright belongs to us." He added, "There was a feeling of wanting to sue, but when we thought about the other members, we let it go. But now we can't compromise anymore." Man Senoi questioned how 4U2C could hold a concert when 25 songs, including popular ones, were owned by Zman Production. "Don't mess with the copyright. Copyright laws in Malaysia are strong. Don't play around. If you're going to do it, do it properly. We're not prohibiting you from using it, but we don't want you to mess with the copyright. I've been to the Copyright Tribunal and I know this stuff." He issued a stern warning: "Don't try to play with fire. This is dangerous. It would be a pity if the business doesn't work out. Tickets won't sell, and a few other things. This is the truth. We are the ones who paid for the 'tracks'. We are the ones who paid for all the production." According to him, all 25 songs are their sole property, and the 4U2C members incurred no costs. "They're just artistes. BMG didn't spend any money either. Don't make a big deal about royalties because we've already paid them directly to BMG," he clarified. "If you want to do a concert, you have to get a permit. Make sure the song ownership is in black and white. It needs approval from MACP and the record company. That's the right thing to do." He added, "Only then can the organiser hold the concert. Otherwise, they can't do it blindly. They could be sued later. The lawsuits are very, very expensive. Don't mess around." The couple, however, are still open to further discussions with the organisers, accompanied by their lawyers. 4U2C sparked a phenomenon in the early 1990s after releasing their debut album, 4U2C, which exploded with hits like "Fiona," "Kami Rappers," "Hip Hop Tip Top Si Jantungku," and "Suara Asia," among many others.

Ministry to hold carnival with film premieres, anti-scam movie launch

PAPAR (June 26): The Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living will be organizing a grand multi-day carnival starting July 16 at the 10Star Cinemas and Majestic Ballroom here at Parklane City. Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Hajiji Noor and the Minister of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali are expected to officiate at the opening ceremony of the event, which is poised to attract over 1,000 attendees. In conjunction with the carnival, 10Star Cinemas at Parklane City will hold a nationwide premiere of the highly anticipated Malaysian film 'Impak Maksima 2' on July 16. Additionally, a launch ceremony will be held for an anti-scam movie titled 'Polis Action Silent Code', which is done in collaboration with the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM). 10Star Cinemas Sdn Bhd chief executive officer Onn Norshal Hamzah shared the exciting news today with WSG Group managing director Datuk Susan Wong Siew Guen. 10Star Cinemas Sdn Bhd is the co-organizer for the carnival. Onn Norshal also invited Susan as special guest for the series of carnival activities on July 16. The event will feature stalls both inside and outside the ballroom, as well as a display of sports cars to hype up the premiere of 'Impak Maksima 2'. 'The Chief Minister, minister, officers from the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living, PDRM, Papar folks and media will be attending the event.' He said all 500 seats across six halls of the cinema have been reserved to host Armizan's supporters and Papar residents. The programme and carnival activities are expected to draw more than 1,000 people, making it one of the liveliest events in Papar. Onn Norshal disclosed that his team will be having a meeting with the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living to discuss details of the programme. Meanwhile, Susan is delighted that the cinema and ballroom have driven more people and activities to Parklane City. She believed that the grand carnival will make Parklane City a hotspot for Paparians. She also pledged full support for the event, including providing more parking spaces and necessary services to ensure the carnival is a memorable experience for the people of Papar. On another note, Onn Norshal said Parklane City has become a renowned township not only in Kuala Lumpur, but also Indonesia, thanks to Susan's efforts. 'In fact, an Indonesian film distributor has now requested to launch their upcoming horror film at 10Star Cinemas in Papar,' he said, after returning from a trip from Indonesia. He noted that their previous launch of the true story-based Indonesian horror film 'Vina' at the cinema has received overwhelming response, leaving a strong impression on the Indonesian film company. As a result, they have requested another launch event to be held at 10Star Cinemas in Parklane City. Since incorporating the Majestic Ballroom with support from developer Susan, Onn Norshal said the Parklane City model has received widespread praise and is now a benchmark for the company's future developments. He added that 10Star Cinemas currently has six cinemas across Sabah, with Tawau leading in revenue, but Benoni's outlet is rapidly climbing and is expected to become the top-performing cinema in Sabah by year-end. 'We're already seeing over 3,000 weekend admissions, which is a fantastic result,' he said. He said the success of the Papar model has boosted the company's confidence. Therefore, Onn Norshal announced that 10Star Cinemas will expand into the newly developed Kinarut Palm City, another project by WSG Group, and create an upgraded version of its cinema entertainment complex. He added that 10Star Cinemas has invested around RM5 million for its project in Papar, and the company plans to invest RM7 million in Kinarut. In addition to a cinema and banquet hall, the new development will include a café, bookstore, and other related outlets to create a more comprehensive wellness and leisure entertainment hub. Furthermore, he said the facilities at the Majestic Ballroom in Benoni will be continuously upgraded, to provide the people of Papar with a better event venue and services. Onn Norshal revealed that demand for venue rentals at the Majestic Ballroom is overwhelming, with weekends almost fully booked. There are already customers who have booked for September, October, and even November, he said. He said the company actively collects customers' feedback to improve the interior facilities of the ballroom. He said curtains, air conditioning units, heat-insulating window film, and additional lighting are being installed to improve the experience for clients.
