South Korea's exam paper thieves suspected to have been active for at least 2 years
SEOUL - As police investigate an exam paper theft case at a high school involving a student's parent and a former teacher, officials now believe that they had been
stealing papers since 2023 , shortly after the student entered the school.
The two suspects were apprehended earlier this week, after they broke into the high school in Andong, North Gyeongsang Province, to steal the exam papers, but set off a break-in alarm.
Officials at the Andong Police Station is currently investigating the 18-year-old student as well, who is believed to have benefitted from the exam paper theft. She was summoned for questioning on July 16, but claimed that she had nothing to do with the crime.
The high school has decided to expel the student and give scores of zero to all the tests she has taken at the school. The student, who was in her final year, had reportedly been at the top of her class since she joined the school.
According to local broadcaster TV Chosun on July 16, the teacher told investigators that she participated in the exam thefts since the student was a freshman, which would be in 2023. The suspect said she either stole the papers or took photos of them to deliver to the parent.
The 31-year-old teacher had taught at the school until February last year, but she continued to break into the school to steal papers even after she left school.
Both the teacher and the 48-year-old mother of the student have been placed under arrest, as was a male employee of the school who had cooperated in the break-in and deleted the security footage. THE KOREA HERALD/ ASIA NEWS NETWORK

Father who shot son with homemade gun at birthday party in S. Korea says he ‘felt betrayed'
Police tape sealing off the suspect's apartment in Dobong, northern Seoul, on July 21 after the authorities found and safely removed a makeshift explosive. SEOUL - A 62-year-old man accused of fatally shooting his son with a homemade firearm said had 'felt betrayed' after being cut off financially by the family, local media reported on July 25. According to multiple media reports, the suspect told profilers during a recent questioning that he had been receiving around 3 million won (S$2,770) a month from the family business. The payments, made in the form of a salary, with him registered as an employee, stopped 'at some point last year'. He had since relied on a lump-sum withdrawal from his national pension to cover living expenses. Describing himself as 'a good person who lived a decent life in the past', the suspect expressed resentment toward the son, saying the victim 'turned his back' on him. The family business he mentioned appears to be a skincare franchise founded by his ex-wife. He has reportedly been unemployed for the past three to four years and has been living in a top-floor penthouse flat in Incheon, spanning some 230sq m, which is owned by his ex-wife. The Incheon Metropolitan Police Department, which is investigating the case, said that while such statements were included in the profiling report, the investigation is still ongoing, with no definitive conclusion yet on the suspect's motives. The fatal shooting occurred at 9.31pm (8.31pm Singapore time), July 20, at the suspect's home during a birthday celebration reportedly organised by the victim for the suspect, and was attended by the victim's wife, their two children and other family acquaintances.
