These are the factors that fuelled SA auto industry's strong Q1 rebound
The recovery of the SA automotive sector is driven by improved consumer sentiment, lower interest rates and access to retirement savings through two-pot withdrawals, according to the latest TransUnion SA Mobility Insights Report for Q1 2025. Rising real wages have also contributed to an upward trajectory averaging about 34,000 monthly passenger vehicle sales in the first quarter of the year, and representing the highest levels seen since Q3 2015. Affordability, longer ownership cycles and the growing availability of low-cost models remains the driver of purchase decisions, particularly younger and first-time buyers. 'SA consumers are returning to the vehicle market with a clear focus on value and flexibility,' said Lee Naik, CEO of TransUnion Africa. 'We're seeing a continued shift away from traditional premium segments in favour of more accessible alternatives that meet evolving needs and budgets.' Social media Gen Z's rising influence, responsible for a 27.9% year-on-year increase in vehicle finance volumes, highlights social media's importance to automotive brands aiming to attract younger buyers, who are said to spend more than three-and-a-half hours daily on platforms including TikTok, Instagram and YouTube.

Mkhwanazi slams doorless car cop [video]
KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi has ordered that disciplinary steps be taken against a police officer who was captured on a viral video driving a doorless marked police car. The video was taken on Sunday, 1 June, as the police vehicle was involved in an accident in the Durban North policing precincts where it collided with a minibus taxi. According to the police, the driver at the time of the accident was a female Warrant Officer who was trapped inside the vehicle, and the door had to be removed to rescue her. KZN police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda said without the door, although in a drivable condition, the vehicle should have been towed back to the police station. 'Instead of following prescribed procedures, another driver, also a Warrant Officer, drove the vehicle to the station, endangering his life and putting the name and the image of the SAPS into disrepute,' he said. Relatable Rachel? Former wag embraces the real life – in a trusty Toyota Yaris
Rachel Kolisi may have once been behind the wheel of a Land Rover or luxury Mercedes-Benz, but these days, the school run looks a little different – and far more relatable. The mother-of-two, known for her humility and grounded approach to life, has traded in high-end horsepower for the practicality of a Toyota Yaris. And, according to Rachel, she and the little silver Yaris – affectionately named "Betsy" – are getting along just fine. Despite her glamorous past life alongside Springbok captain Siya Kolisi, Rachel has always struck a chord with fans for her girl-next-door charm. These days, she's juggling solo parenting duties in Cape Town's Southern Suburbs, doing the school run daily and managing life with quiet resilience and a sense of humour. In a now-deleted Instagram post, Rachel shared a series of candid photos alongside Betsy, accompanied by a caption that was refreshingly honest. 'Life has a funny way of humbling you just when you think you've got it all figured out,' she wrote. 'One day you're riding high, the next you're asking a friend to borrow their spare car and googling 'how to parallel park a Yaris with dignity."
