Boca Raton 13-year-old wins her second straight Drive, Chip and Putt tournament at Masters

BOCA RATON — Not many 13-year-olds can say they hold not just one, but two golf titles in the Drive, Chip, and Putt (DCP) National Championships — but Boca Raton's Alexandra Phung can.Drive, Chip, and Putt is a national junior golf tournament with finals held annually in Augusta, Ga., that has three events focusing on each of the fundamental golf skills. Before making it to the Augusta Nationals, competitors need to qualify at local, regional and sub-regional events.Phung, a student at Florida Atlantic University's A.D. Henderson University School, has been playing golf since she was 6 years old. In all of her golfing years, she has competed in multiple tournaments across the United States and Europe. She competed at the DCP Augusta Nationals four times and has won two titles. She won the 10-11 age division in 2023, and this year she won the 12-13 age division with a perfect 30-foot putt. This second win put her on a short list of multiple-time DCP national champions.'It's an honor to be able to putt and walk on the Augusta National course,' Phung said.
Beyond her impressive feats in golf, she enjoys playing chess and fishing. She also tutors kids in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) subjects such as robotics and artificial intelligence and fosters dogs, hoping to find them forever homes.Above all, she loves to make people happy. That's why, when she made it to the Augusta Nationals in 2023, she made sure to share the experience with others.Phung gave out free tickets to 9-year-old Augusta-based golfer Caroline Deese and 82-year-old retired Marine and golf lover Harvey Silverman. She reached out to Deese on Instagram, and before the girl knew it, she was excitedly watching Phung win her first DCP title.
Deese, who has been playing golf for three years and competing for one, says Phung is an inspiration. She competed in DCP this year, making it past the local and regional levels but not the sub-regional level.'She inspired me to get to that next level,' Deese said. One day, she even wants to go pro.

Silverman met Phung and her family at Gillette Ridge Golf Club in Bloomfield, Conn., when she was just 7 years old. He was practicing his own swing, but so was she.'I looked over on the driving range, and it was a Sunday, and all the adults — nobody was hitting the ball,' Silverman said. 'They were all watching this little girl put the ball on about 150 yards, and her father would say, right, left, whatever. She would just do it. So I watched her. I couldn't believe it.'From that point on, he took Phung under his wing, acting as her mentor and friend. While at the DCP trials in Cromwell, Conn., in 2023, she invited him to be her chaperone at the Augusta Nationals.Phung says her family contributes heavily to her success financially, mentally and emotionally. Her father introduced her to golf, but what really made her want to pursue the sport competitively was watching her sister Amelie play, she said in a Q&A on the DCP website.Amelie is successful in her own right, having competed in and won golf tournaments across the world. She says Amelie gives her tips and tricks for not only golf but also juggling school and other responsibilities.'She helps me with my game,' Phung said. 'Because she's gone through it before, she knows the difficulties and hardships that come with it.'
MASTERS: Rory McIlroy joins most exclusive club in golf by completing grand slam at Masters
Michael Earley, 69, sponsored Phung's small student-made golf team and is constantly in awe of both girls. And not just because of the talent they present while golfing.'They're not only impressive golfers, but they're impressive young ladies,' Earley said. 'They're good students, they have other skills, they play other sports … They're doing good things.'Silverman admires both of the Phung sisters' dedication to the sport and their drive.'I have pictures of [Alexandra] when she first started. You see the difference, and they showed it on television … It's amazing to see. Well, they're dedicated. You know? It's like they're good because they're dedicated. This is what they do. You know, they put 125% into it. They don't fool around,' Silverman said.
MASTERS: Rory McIlroy wins 2025 Masters. What are the golfer's ties to Jupiter?
Alexandra Phung doesn't know yet if she wants to play golf professionally. She is putting her education first, just like her sister, who recently announced her commitment to Rice University for D1 college golf.'I try to be a good role model for her,' Amelie said.

Lefty Ready for Final US Open amid Catching Fire at LIV Golf Virginia

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Six-time major champion Phil Mickelson has played in 33 editions of the US Open, a tournament he has never won despite finishing second six times. That drought could end next week at Oakmont, however, as a victory for Mickelson is not out of the question, especially now. Everything indicates that "Lefty" is peaking at the right moment. During Sunday's final round at LIV Golf Virginia, Mickelson reminded everyone of his prowess with a wedge in his hand. Lefty holed out on an incredibly difficult chip to remain in contention for the win. He ultimately tied for fourth at LIV Golf Virginia. This is the second-best result of his career at LIV Golf, coming less than a week before the third major of the season begins. Mickelson was among the tournament leaders from the start and was tied for first for some of the final round. Despite posting an excellent 6-under on Sunday, Mickelson was overtaken by Joaquin Niemann, who won the event, as well as by Graeme McDowell and Anirban Lahiri, who tied for second. Although he is still seeking his first LIV Golf win, Mickelson performed well on a challenging course like the Robert Trent Jones Golf Club in Gainesville. The six-time major champion posted scores of 4-under and 3-under during the first two rounds, finishing with a 54-hole score of 13-under. Getty Images/Alex Goodlett This is Mickelson's third top-10 finish of the season, and he is enjoying his best streak since joining LIV Golf. 2025 has been the year in which he has earned the most top-10 finishes since joining the league, as well as the best finish of his career: third place in Hong Kong. There's no doubt that both his season results and his performance in Virginia point to an enviable current form. His confidence will surely be boosted when looking for a strong result at Oakmont next week. This issue is of the utmost importance, not only for Mickelson, but also for all golf enthusiasts. The US Open is the only title missing for "Lefty" to achieve the highly coveted Career Grand Slam, a feat accomplished by only six other players in the history of the sport. As if it wasn't enough, Mickelson's exemption from playing in the US Open expires in 2025, so the upcoming edition could be his last. He recently addressed the topic and acknowledged this may be his final appearance at the US Open. "There's a high likelihood that it will be [my last], but I haven't really thought about it too much," Mickleson said. However, the 54-year-old already holds the record for being the oldest major champion after winning the 2021 PGA Championship at age 51. We'll see if he can break his own mark. U.S. Nationals: Katie Ledecky Swims Third-Fastest Time Ever In 800 Free

INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA - JUNE 03: Katie Ledecky looks on after competing in the Women's 800m ... More Freestyle on day one of the Toyota National Championships at Indiana University Natatorium on June 03, 2025 in Indianapolis, Indiana. (Photo by) Since the start of her career, Katie Ledecky has dominated the 800 free event, losing the race only once in her career. On the first day of the Toyota National Championships, the 28-year-old yet again dominated the race with a comfortable lead from the start. Ledecky touched the wall first in 8:05.76 seconds, swimming under her own world record pace halfway through the race. With a 13.91-second lead, she clocked the third-fastest time in history, helping her to qualify for the World Championships in July. Interestingly, this wasn't the first notable outing by Ledecky this year. In May, she broke the 800 free world record in 8:04.12 at the Fort Lauderdale Pro Series. She was half a second faster than her own previous record of 8:04.79 set at the 2016 Olympics. Ledecky, who has won four consecutive Olympic golds in the event, currently also owns 11 of the all-time top long-course performances in history. 'The 800m was my last race in Fort Lauderdale, and then having it as the first race here, it kind of felt like I was just going right back into it,' she said. Ledecky was followed by Claire Weinstein and Jillian Cox in 8:19.67 and 8:19.88, respectively. Katie Ledecky's performance has been steadily improving over the years. Since leaving Stanford in 2021 to train with Anthony Nesty at the University of Florida, her 800 free performance has showcased a significant resurgence breaking the 8:10 sub-barrier six times following the transition. Her 800 free world record in May also helped her break her first long-course record in seven years. Prior to that, Ledecky had taken down the record five times between 2013 and 2016. At Fort Lauderdale she also managed to swim the second-fastest 400 free of her career and the second-fastest time in the 1500 free. According to Ledecky, her world-record winning comeback has been possible due to her training following the post-Olympic break. Ledecky, who faced a few 'ups and downs' during the Olympic year, including health issues, 'hurt some of the momentum' she built in 2022 and 2023. However, the nine-time Olympic gold medalist, who has remained 'healthy for most of the year,' was able to 'pick back up her momentum last fall.' Katie Ledecky, who 'felt really relaxed' during her race on Tuesday, is now only a month away from participating in her seventh World Championships. Notably, she will be presented with one more chance to create history this season and become the first swimmer to win the seventh world title in the same event.

Drive thump Rome

GREENVILLE, S.C. — Red Sox No. 24 Prospect Nazzan Zanetello launched two home runs and Antonio Anderson added a three-run blast of his own as the Greenville Drive powered past the Rome Emperors, 7–3, in the opener of a six-game series Tuesday night at Fluor Field. With the win, Greenville (26–26) pulled even with Rome (26–26) in the South Atlantic League South Division standings. Antonio Anderson and Zanetello went back-to-back homers in the bottom of the first and the Drive never looked back. Zanetello homered each of his first two at-bats — a solo shot to left-center in the first inning and another solo blast to left in the third — giving him four on the season. Anderson's homer, his second of the year, came earlier in the first inning with two men on, capping a four-run opening frame that set the tone for the night. Greenville's starter Adam Smith was sharp, tossing five innings of one-hit ball while allowing two runs in the fifth. The Emperors broke through with sacrifice flies from Ambioris Tavarez and a groundout from Bryson Horne, trimming the lead to 5–2, but they would get no closer. The Drive added insurance runs in the seventh and eighth. Red Sox No. 3 Prospect Franklin Arias singled home Andy Lugo as part of his 2 hit performance to extend the 2nd longest hitting streak in the Minor Leagues – at any level- in the seventh. Arias has recorded a hit in 13 straight contests; only 4 games shy of the active streak leader from the Rockies AAA squad. An inning later, Arias lifted a sacrifice fly to center to score Brooks Brannon and make it 7–2. Rome's E.J. Exposito homered with two outs in the ninth off Jonathan Brand to briefly cut the deficit to 7–3, but Brand closed the door with a strikeout of Horne to seal the victory. Arias went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a walk and also stole two bases. Lugo added a double, walk, and a run scored. Zanetello drove in two and scored twice, while Anderson finished 1-for-3 with a home run, three RBIs and a walk. The Drive pitching trio of Smith, Darvin Garcia, and Brand combined to hold Rome to just four hits. Smith (4.73 ERA) earned the win, Garcia allowed one hit over two scoreless innings of relief, and Brand gave up the ninth-inning homer but finished the final two frames. Rome starter Herick Hernandez (6.07 ERA) took the loss, allowing five runs on five hits over 4.2 innings, including all three Greenville home runs. The Drive and Emperors resume their series Wednesday night at Fluor Field. First pitch is scheduled for 6:45 p.m. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
