Savings Guide: Rates are staying higher - so what are your best options?

For this week's guide, Anna Bowes, personal finance expert from The Private Office, explores why savings rates are holding up better than expected. Despite the Bank of England cutting the base rate this month, savings rates are proving to be resistant against any drops. In fact, the top easy access rate is higher than the best rate that was on offer before the Bank's decision. "Although many economists still seem to think that there could be two base rate cuts this year, the markets seem to think there will be only one, which could be a key reason that certainly the best rates on offer are holding up well," Bowes says. Topping this week's table is the financial app Chip, which is paying 4.77% on the current issue of its easy access saver. "This account is only available via an app, it may not be for everyone - and the rate will fall by 2.10% if more than four withdrawals are made per year," Bowes says. "The rate also includes a 12-month bonus of 1.47%. This is a good illustration of the need to read all the terms and conditions so that you earn the interest you expect to." Here's a look at the top rates available... Fixed-rate bonds We have seen some bonds withdrawn from the market this week, but overall there has been little movement in the best rates available. The top one-year bond is paying 4.44%, while the top two-year bond is paying 4.42%. Perhaps the most encouraging are the top three-year and five-year bonds, which are paying 4.43%. Here are the top paying bonds... Fixed-rate ISAs The top one-year and two-year fixed cash ISA rates have remained the same over the past week, but the top five-year rate has increased slightly. The top rate of 4.16% offered by Secure Trust Bank was pipped by UBL UK with an ISA paying 4.17%. Over three years, unfortunately Ford Money withdrew its ISA paying 4.2%, leaving two providers, UBL UK and United Trust Bank both offering 4.17%. "If interest rates do fall going forwards, if you've locked in at these longer-term rates, you may well still be congratulating yourself in the future - for grabbing top tax-free rates while you can," Bowes says. Here are the best ISAs on the market... Easy access cash ISAs Competition has hotted up in this part of the savings market in the past week, but no provider has launched a rate to beat those seen at the beginning of May. Chip, which held the top spot last week, saw its competitor Plum and Moneybox come for its title by launching new ISAs paying 4.85%, but it retaliated by upping its rate to match them. Plum responded with a 4.98% rate, but Chip pipped it to the post by coming back with an ISA offering 4.99% for new customers. "Once again though, the devil is also in the detail. Both of these providers are financial apps rather than banks themselves. With Plum, your cash could be deposited with a trio of banks - Citibank, Lloyds and QNB, whilst Chip uses Clearbank Ltd," Bowes points out. Here's a look at the other accounts making it into our top table...

Chip boosts its easy-access cash Isa to pump it up the best buy tables - is it worth opening?

Chip has boosted its easy-access cash Isa rate to 4.99 per cent as the competition to offer the best buy tax-free deal heats up once more. The app-based provider has added a 12-month bonus to its easy-access cash Isa* of 0.93 per cent, boosting the overall rate to 4.99 per cent. The new rate is available to This is Money readers who download the Chip app and open an easy-access Isa through the app. New customers must enter the code PROMOBOOST when prompted in the app. The boosted rate means there is yet another reshuffle at the top of the Isa best buy tables, with Chip's deal now the best rate for an easy-access Isa with a 12-month bonus added. It has overtaken Plum's* 4.98 per cent easy-access Isa deal, which was previously the best rate for an easy-access Isa with a 12-month bonus. Chip's easy-access Isa has the added feature of being flexible, something Plum's easy-access Isa deal not have. This feature allows savers to deposit and withdraw their money without affecting their Isa allowance. Savers can replace any money they withdraw from their Isa without it counting towards their yearly Isa allowance, as long as they replace the money in the same tax year. Not all providers have this feature meaning funds withdrawn lose their tax-free status and will be taken off the allowance. Once the bonus rate wears off after 12 months, Chip's revert rate is 4.06 per cent, far than Plum's revert rate of 3.29 per cent. Customers who transfer an existing Isa to Plum's easy-access deal will also get a lower rate of 3.29 per cent. Plum's Isa also limits withdrawals to four withdrawals in a 12-month period. The rate will drop to 3.29 per cent if more than four withdrawals are made over 12 months. There are higher Isa rates available than both of these deals. Most contain bonus rates which drop off after three months. CMC invest's easy-access Isa* is still the best overall deal. It offers 5.7 per cent with a three month bonus rate of 0.85 per cent. After this the revert rate is 5.06 per cent. The Isa is fully flexible and does not have withdrawal restrictions. Moneybox is offering the best headline rate for an easy-access Isa of 5.71 per cent with a 1.51 per cent bonus rate for three months. After this the rate is 4.2 per cent. It allows three free withdrawals over 12 months, but if a fourth withdrawal is made the rate drops to just 0.75 per cent for the rest of the 12 months. Trading 212's easy-access Isa deal* pays 4.86 per cent to new customers. This rate includes a 0.76 per cent bonus rate for 12 months. After this the rate reverts to 4.1 per cent, which is the rate existing customers receive. The Isa is flexible and does not have withdrawal restrictions. What's in the fine print of Chip's deal? Chip is an app-based provider so any savings accounts opened with it can only be opened through its app, including its easy-access cash Isa. The easy-access cash Isa can be opened with deposits from £1 as often as you like. The interest is earned daily and paid monthly on the fourth working day of each month. All money deposited in Chip's easy-access Isa deal is held by ClearBank, and is eligible for Financial Services Compensation Scheme protection of up to £85,000 per person. This FSCS protection means savers' cash is protected up to £85,000 per person if the firm fails.

Waikato Fog Fence: A tribute to No 8 wire creativity

It's a tightrope of temptation, whispering, 'Go on, touch me.' For generations, it's been the source of dares, double-dares and the occasional public urination incident that ends in an abrupt and deeply personal lesson in conductivity. Every rural Kiwi knows someone, or is someone, who's discovered what happens when curiosity meets current. And then there are the novelty fences. You know the ones. The bra fence that waves underwire patriotism to passing motorists. The gumboot fence. The jandal fence. Fences that look like a recycling bin exploded. Each one more baffling and brilliant than the last. They start with one item and end up becoming local landmarks. Tourists don't always understand them, but they stop for a selfie anyway - and that's the point. It's rural eccentricity on display, nailed firmly to the fenceline. That got me thinking - there's one fence we're missing. The 'Waikato Fog Fence'. Advertise with NZME. Picture it: a fog fence. Obviously, as Bing Crosby would say, 'don't fence me in' — so not technically a fence, but a tribute to fog that resembles a fence (or a wall of fog). I'm thinking a curtain of long, white plastic strips, like those flappy ones on old bach doors or the fish and chip shop that still proudly displays a faded 'Best Fish 'n' Chip Shop 1998' certificate. But instead of rainbow colours, just whites. Layers of whites. An ode to FOG! And while we're at it, let's go full fog and start rebranding. Every single all-white paint swatch in the Dulux Colours of New Zealand range? Rename them all Hamilton Fog. Let's even re-release the Beatles' White Album as The Fog Album. No track names. No cover art. There's marketing gold here, Hamilton — and it's just in time for Fieldays. T-shirts with 'Not to be Mist' printed in white-on-white. Unruled 1A8 exercise books that look like stunning images of a foggy Waikato morning (until you realise they're just blank). Come on, Hamilton — let's make the Fog Fence a reality. After all, this is the birthplace of the electric fence. You could say fences are the pulsing heart of the Waikato — a current running through Waikato veins, occasionally zapping our ... And if nothing else, think back to the pure joy of running through a multi-coloured plastic flyscreen as a kid. Now imagine doing that at 110km/h, in a Corolla, through a curtain of white. Iconic. Inventive. Entirely unnecessary. .
