Chip Gaines responds to backlash after featuring same-sex couple on new show

Miami Herald16-07-2025
HGTV stars Chip and Joanna Gaines' new Magnolia Network recently featured a same-sex couple on their series 'Back to the Frontier.'
The show, which also streams on HBO Max, features families as they 'leave the 21st century behind to live as 1800s pioneers.'
IMDb describes the series as a 'bold social experiment that will test their strength, stamina, and sense of humor.'
One of the families featured on the show is the Hanna-Riggs family, which features dads Jason Hanna and Joe Riggs and their 10-year-old twin sons.
After the show's premiere on July 10, son of evangelical pastor Billy Graham, Franklin Graham, took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to share his thoughts on the show.
'I hope this isn't true, but I read today that Chip and Joanna Gaines are featuring a gay couple in their new series. If it is true, it is very disappointing,' his tweet read. 'While we are to love people, we should love them enough to tell them the truth of God's Word. His Word is absolute truth. God loves us, and His design for marriage is between one man and one woman. Promoting something that God defines as sin is in itself sin.'
Chip Gaines seemingly responded to the backlash with a post of his own, defending the Hanna-Riggs family and others like them.
'Talk, ask (questions), listen.. maybe even learn,' Chip Gaines wrote. 'Too much to ask of modern American Christian culture. Judge 1st, understand later/never. It's a sad Sunday when 'non believers' have never been confronted with hate or vitriol until they are introduced to a modern American Christian.'
In response to Chip Gaines' tweet, conservative social commentator Joel Berry wrote, 'You'll see no hate from me. I'm just sad. I can't let my kids watch your show now, since I'm trying to protect their eyes and hearts from the lies of the world—lies you're now participating in.'
'Also, filter out some of the online vitriol and consider taking to heart some of the substantive concerns and heartbreak from the Christians who make up your fanbase,' Berry continued. 'We should love the sinner—that doesn't mean we celebrate and promote the sin and participate in the multibillion dollar industry dedicated to destroying the family.'
'Don't be sad Joel,' Chip Gaines wrote in response. 'Plenty of other stuff out there. I'm sure everyone will be fine. BUT I sincerely appreciate the advice about taking some of the thoughtful, heartfelt, encouraging constructive criticism to heart.. and I certainly will.'
Chip and Joanna Gaines launched Magnolia Network in 2022.
Following the backlash, Hanna told Queerty that he is 'super honored that when they were choosing three modern-day families, they did choose a same-sex couple as a modern-day family, because we are. We are your neighbors and your co-workers.'

NYC's hilarious ‘de-influencer' is the hero TikTok needs — and he's beating his phony foes at their own game

NYC's suffering from serious influence-a — and one man's hilarious TikTok videos could be the cure. After a divisive decade that saw the city fall under the spell of obnoxious influencers, an anonymous social media account administrator for a local, family-owned popcorn company has become the hero Gotham needs — delighting viewers with viral clips mocking the tiresome trend of crummy content creation. From faux-foodies to freebie-obsessed fashionistas, nobody's safe from the self-described 'de-influencer' in charge of the Daadi Snacks account, where the mystery man racks up scores of views on sarcastic send-ups of social media's worst offenders — all delivered in a dead-on rendition of the nasally, uptalky, vocally fried 'influencer voice' that's become the noxious norm. Typical methods clearly aren't for this unnamed marketing man turned app agitator — he's too busy snapping up new fans with satirical reactions aimed squarely at the hordes of entitled interlopers running amok on Big Apple streets. 'I'm literally shaking. They sent me an $80,000 car instead of a $120,000 car. I guess they do say God gives his toughest battles to his strongest soldiers,' the popular pot-stirrer joked in his most successful video aimed at a typically tough-to-take over-sharer, with nearly 9 million views to date. Not only are the punny pushbacks from a formerly-unknown 'corn popper making people laugh, they're also helping him beat actual influencers at their own game. Since achieving newfound notoriety, the small company, which now has 300K followers on TikTok and another 150K on Instagram, has struggled to keep product in stock. Daadi Snacks offers vegan, all-natural popcorn — characterized by South Asian-inspired flavors like Sweet Chai and Spicy Masala, according to the brand. The Daadi Snacks-repping de-influencer explained that the family company was inspired by his grandmother's recipes. Instagram/daadisnacks The instigator claimed in a recent post that he's not in it for the content creation money, like most people posting to TikTok at this level — 'I post to speak my mind and help my family's snack biz,' he explained last May. For his trouble, the de-influencer says that he's received multiple cease and desist letters and several lawsuit threats from irate creators — apparently irked by his increasing popularity. And he's missing out on even more followers due to the nature of his content, he said. Though he takes down tacky TikTokkers from all over, his NYC-based videos are scoring well among fed-up local viewers. TikTok/@daadisnacks 'People unfollow me because they say I'm too mean to influencers, but I would argue I need to be meaner,' he mused in one video. Plenty appear to agree, with a recent Reddit thread heaping praise on the mystery man. 'I can imagine … a lot of toxic influencers choking on their matcha lattes searching their Balenciaga bags to reply on their smart phones adorned with cheap cubic zirconia crystals,' a poster snarked. ''Influencers are boring and unoriginal and can get bent,' another chimed in. The Post has reached out to Daadi Snacks for comment.

'South Park' Scrubbed from HBO Max This Week: Here's Why

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. South Park will be leaving HBO Max after airing a provocative episode criticizing President Donald Trump and invoking a response from the White House last month. However, the departure from HBO Max has nothing to do with its recent depiction of Trump, as it was originally scheduled as part of South Park's new deal with Paramount+ to offer the show exclusively on that platform. Why It Matters South Park made the news last month when it kicked off its 27th season on July 23 with an episode featuring a parody of Trump. During the episode, Trump was mocked for suing people who have different political opinions as well as his physical appearance. It also showed Trump in a relationship with Satan. AaronP/Bauer-Griffin/GC Images What To Know Why is South Park Leaving HBO? South Park's exit from HBO Max occurred on Tuesday, August 5, but it was not the result of any political issues with the show. The satirical animation, which often pokes fun at pop culture and political events, was previously scheduled to move its library of episodes to Paramount+ under a new multiyear licensing arrangement. Previously, HBO Max viewers had access to all of South Park's TV seasons, while Paramount allowed fans to watch event "specials." Newsweek reached out to HBO Max for comment via email. Donald Trump South Park Episode: What Happens in the Episode? During the most recent Trump South Park episode, Sermon on the Mount, the president is depicted in a romantic relationship with Satan. He's also made fun of for his physical appearance and for suing people he disagrees with. The White House issued a statement in response to the episode, saying the show "hasn't been relevant for over 20 years." The episode was South Park's most watched season premiere since 1999, and ratings were up 68 percent over the season 26 premiere. Kristi Noem Subject of Recent Episode Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem will likely be the butt of a joke in this week's episode of South Park. In a teaser for the upcoming episode on Wednesday, South Park shows an animated version of Noem done up with makeup and standing by an ICE vehicle, holding up her gun. "'Got A Nut': When Mr. Mackay loses his job, he desperately tries to find a new way to make a living," South Park summarized the upcoming episode in a new post on X. Noem, the former governor of South Dakota, has supported Trump consistently through his reelection. She also gained widespread attention when she admitted in a memoir that she shot and killed her family dog for being "untrainable." Trump nominated Noem to serve as DHS secretary and she was confirmed by the Senate in January. Since then, Noem has implemented Trump's immigration policies, ramping up deportations of undocumented immigrants and earning the name "ICE Barbie." Newsweek reached out to the Department of Homeland Security for comment via email. What People Are Saying White House spokesperson Taylor Rogers said in a statement last month: "This show hasn't been relevant for over 20 years and is hanging on by a thread with uninspired ideas in a desperate attempt for attention, … President Trump has delivered on more promises in just six months than any other president in our country's history—and no fourth-rate show can derail President Trump's hot streak." Podcaster Joe Rogan said about the Trump episode of South Park during a July podcast: "There's so much chaos, there's so much madness. They did a Donald Trump on with Satan. It's f****** hilarious. They haven't given a f*** since the beginning, and it's the greatest show of all time." What Happens Next The next episode of South Park will air Wednesday, August 6 at 10 p.m. EST on Comedy Central. Fans of the show can now also watch South Park exclusively on Paramount+.
