Mystics too strong for Magic in netball clash

The Northern Mystics have beaten the Waikato Bay of Plenty Magic for the second time in a week, but this time it was more decisive.
The Mystics won 63-51, with stand-in goal shoot Sophia Lafaiali'i starring with another brilliant display.
It was a more dominant performance
than their two point win over the same rivals on Monday
.
The latest win sees the Mystics overtake the Tactix at the top of the ANZ Premiership ladder, though the Christchurch-based team can regain number one spot if they beat the Stars in Christchurch on Sunday.
Lafaiali'i, who has come into the team in recent weeks for the injured Donnell Wallam, played like a cool veteran, not missing a shot until the third quarter. She nailed 47 of her 49 one-point attempts and one from three for her super shot attempts. Filda Vui backed her up with 12 points.
Lafaiali'i would have been thankful for the slick feeding from her team-mates. Match stats told a story, with the Mystics having 23 more shots at goal and a centre pass conversion rate of 82 percent, compared to just 58 percent for the Magic.
The Mystics led 13-11 at the end of the first quarter and never let go of it. They dominated strongly early in the second quarter before Ameliaranne Ekenasio and Saviour Tui launched a super shot blitz, with Tui landing four straight.
It was 30-27 to the Mystics at half-time, 46-40 after three quarters, and they outscored the Magic by six points in the final stanza.
Tui and Ekenasio were accurate for the Magic but they didn't get nearly enough opportunities due to the strong defensive efforts of Michaela Sokolich-Beatson and Catherine Hall.

Tui shot 16 from 17 of her one-point attempts and seven from 10 of her two-pointers, while Ekenasio was 100 percent with her 17 one-pointers, and landed two from her five two-point shots.
Mystics midcourter Tayla Earle said the team was pleased to improve on their display on Monday, and said they had learned from that.
"We have been talking about trying to apply pressure earlier so we don't have to rely on our big backs in the circle, so I am proud of the girls," she told Sky Sport.
Magic coach Mary-Jane Araroa took some heart from an improved performance from Monday's effort, but rued a lack of timing and connection from her players.
"We can't stay in the eliminations with those kind of stats," she told Sky Sport.

NBA great Kevin Durant to join Steven Adams at Houston Rockets

Photo: AFP The Houston Rockets are acquiring 15-time All-Star forward Kevin Durant, who will rejoin his former team-mate Steven Adams following the New Zealander's recent contract extension. Durant has joined from the Phoenix Suns in exchange for guard Jalen Green, forward Dillon Brooks, the No. 10 overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft and five second-round picks, ESPN reported on Monday. The trade can be completed when the new league year begins on July 6. At that point, Durant will be eligible to sign a two-year extension worth up to $US122 million ($NZ204 million). Durant has one season left on his current deal and is set to earn $US54.7 million in 2025-26. Durant will join a Rockets team that finished the regular season as the second seed in the Western Conference. The star forward will join All-Star Alperen Sengun, Amen Thompson and Fred VanVleet in Houston. Also on board is veteran centre Adams, who last week signed a contract extension after enjoying an impressive debut season with the Rockets. Durant, who turns 37 in September, played in 62 games with the Suns in 2024-25. He averaged 26.6 points, 6.0 rebounds, 4.2 assists and 1.2 blocks, not far off of his career averages. He also shot 43.0 percent from 3-point range. Selected to the All-NBA first team six times, Durant has appeared in 1,123 games with the Seattle SuperSonics/Thunder (2007-16), Warriors (2016-19), Brooklyn Nets (2020-23) and Suns. Manawatū family linked to All Blacks gives old homestead new lease on life

Constructed of native totara it's called Romney Lane and is the home where sheep and beef farmer Ian Strahan grew up with his All Black playing dad Sam Strahan. Lock Sam was Manawatu's 14th All Black, regularly turning out alongside Colin Meads. And like many players from his generation, training was in the paddock. Ian said the home at Kiwitea, near Feilding, lends itself nicely to agritourism due to its quiet and accessible location. There was plenty of hard graft to get there with a new kitchen installed. What Ian hadn't done was shy away from his father's legacy as a formidable lock. A collection of rare rugby books, photos and even a jersey from Sam's international career are in the homestead. Photo: Ian said he also wanted to maintain the grand old home to a high standard. "My parents have passed on and we have a house at the other end of the farm" Ian Strahan said. "It's a beautiful old homestead tucked away in a lovely garden and setting well off the road. "We're keen to tell a story about what we do in the country and bridge that gap." As a chef, she's keen to expand the catering potential and to add experiences like a farm walk and biking. Romney sheep were once the backbone of the farming operation. Photo: Brad Hanson "We're just starting out and I can see the potential for it to grow," Steph Strahan said. Visitors tell her they adore the homestead amidst the secluded garden. And recently an Australian film crew visited the property for an undisclosed project. "I'm hoping to do a little bit more in-house catering, I've been a private chef before. If we get some more international guests I'm hoping to get into that space." Steph said it was a thrill to read the guestbook and felt the enjoyment of people who came to enjoy their slice of country. And a quick dash for snacks wasn't out of the question for visitors. The local dairy is six kilometres away at Cheltenham, with cafes and a store around a 10 minute drive away at Kimbolton.
