Salt Path author's next book delayed after ‘intrusive conjecture'
Raynor Winn's story, now a film starring Gillian Anderson and Jason Isaacs, tells how she and her husband, Moth, walked the South West Coast Path after losing their home.
The memoir also recounts how Moth was diagnosed with a neurological condition, but The Observer newspaper reported that Winn may have misrepresented the events that led to the couple losing their home and that experts had doubts over Moth having corticobasal degeneration (CBD).
In a statement on Friday, Penguin Michael Joseph, which published The Salt Path in 2018, said Winn's next book, On Winter Hill, which was due to be published in October, will now be delayed.
A spokeswoman for the publisher said: 'Given recent events, in particular intrusive conjecture around Moth's health condition, which has caused considerable distress to Raynor Winn and her family, it is our priority to support the author at this time.
'With this in mind, Penguin Michael Joseph, together with the author, have made the decision to delay the publication of On Winter Hill from this October.
'We will announce a new publication date in due course.'
The Observer said the couple's legal names are Sally and Timothy Walker.
On Wednesday, Winn defended her memoir against claims parts of it were fabricated, posting clinic letters on Instagram addressed to Timothy Walker, which she said showed that 'he is treated for CBD/S and has been for many years'.
She wrote: 'The last few days have been some of the hardest of my life. Heart breaking accusations that Moth has made up his illness have been made, leaving us devastated.'
In a statement on her website, she said that the article was 'grotesquely unfair, highly misleading and seeks to systematically pick apart my life'.
She added: 'The Salt Path is about what happened to Moth and me, after we lost our home and found ourselves homeless on the headlands of the south west.
'It's not about every event or moment in our lives, but rather about a capsule of time when our lives moved from a place of complete despair to a place of hope.
'The journey held within those pages is one of salt and weather, of pain and possibility. And I can't allow any more doubt to be cast on the validity of those memories, or the joy they have given so many.'
In The Salt Path, the couple lose their house due to a bad business investment, but The Observer reported that the couple lost their home after an accusation that Winn had stolen thousands of pounds from her employer.
Publishing house Penguin previously said it 'undertook all the necessary pre-publication due diligence', including a contract with an author warranty about factual accuracy and a legal read.

It came after Marks & Spencer was branded 'irresponsible' by the regulator for photographing a model in a white top and black jeans, emphasising the 'slenderness of her legs'. In fairness to M&S, and in my professional opinion, the model was shot at a bizarre angle from above, giving her alien-like skinny pins and a big head. But where are the bigwigs at Marks & Spencer who should be saying, 'Erm, she looks a bit thin — let's ditch that pic'? Retailers, their owners and employers have a responsibility to make sure their models are not being misrepresented and seen to be promoting aspirational fashion in a bad way. Sadly, models' figures that were once out of reach for us normal folk are now more attainable than ever, thanks to Ozempic and other fat jab treatments. For me, it is sickening to recall the Nineties and Noughties era of skeletal celebrities, such as that god-awful image of Nicole Richie running down the beach looking emaciated, or even a young Kate Moss with her hip bones barely holding up her Calvin Klein underwear. But the tide turned around 2012 when the stick-thin look was no longer considered ideal — and one woman who doesn't get enough praise for that is Kim Kardashian. With her thighs, boobs and bum, Kim alongside her sisters brought a new body image to the forefront of popular culture which embraced curves. Her extreme dieting to fit into Marilyn Monroe's clothes may have landed her in hot water for setting a bad example, but she did a lot for making a curvy body sexy and aspirational. The body positivity movement peaked around 2015 when curvy models Felicity Hayward, Ashley Graham and Paloma Elsesser graced catwalks and ad campaigns to represent the majority of women (for context, the UK's average dress size is 16). Even fashion bible Vogue is becoming wary of how slim catwalk stars are looking, stating: 'We are facing a worrying return to using extremely thin models.' Since the fat jab boom began, celebrities and influencers have been glamourising the need to be thin. 'It is a widespread shift and it is depressing' A-list celebrities that were the first lot to get their mitts on Ozempic and Mounjaro suddenly shrank and conveniently put it down to that age-old line 'a healthy lifestyle'. Even singer Lizzo, who was known for embracing her curves, has been discussing her weight loss with Women's Health magazine this week. Body positivity is the radical act of daring to exist loudly and proudly. I like how I look now Lizzo on her Ozempic use The 37-year-old Juice hitmaker has previously admitted she tried Ozempic but now credits working out to being the reason for dropping a few dress sizes. She says: 'Body positivity is the radical act of daring to exist loudly and proudly' but adds, 'I like how I look now.' Fair enough. You do whatever you want to do, Lizzo. But it is ironic that despite being proud of her curvier self before, she prefers how she looks now. In 2023, US actress Mindy Kaling dramatically slimmed down, saying she had a new commitment to health and fitness. Pull the other one Mindy. We're not stupid. But at least she isn't a loud and proud spokesperson for body positivity — curvy influencers are. Women who have built an entire following, reputation and career around not being stick thin and celebrating loving every part of themselves — whilst insisting that you should do so too — are now turning their backs on all the female fans who have built them up. The same famous women who claimed that their curvy body was normal and have maintained a healthy lifestyle their whole career are now putting their slim new look down to — you guessed it — a balanced diet and an extra-long dog walk. And those of us who are committed to following these women then look at themselves and think, am I not good enough anymore? It sort of feels like a betrayal or abandonment. Jameela Jamil agrees. She revealed on Instagram that she had unfollowed many body positive ambassadors who 'are now going full diet culture'. The podcaster added: 'Don't perpetuate the culture that you rose to prominence trying to take down. It is a widespread shift we are all seeing everywhere and it's depressing.' The hashtag #thinspo, which promotes extreme thinness and disordered eating, has been banned on TikTok and Instagram. But it still exists elsewhere on social media, and the similar tag #SkinnyTok surpassed 2.4billion views in June. The terrifying amount of views reflects how women are scouring the internet looking for ways to get thin. From celebs to influencers to fashion, the whole situation is a low-fat recipe for disaster — but sadly women and young girls are falling for it. As someone who grew up and lived through the trend the first time around, I know it should not be repeated. We've already said goodbye to low-slung jeans, pedal pushers, Uggs and other unlamented fashions of that era. Spice Girls reveal secret reunion at Oasis gig years after 'feud' with Liam Gallagher
Oasis' Liam Gallagher and Noel Gallagher performed at Wembley Stadium last week and it's now been revealed that the Spice Girls' Mel C and Geri Horner reunited at one of the gigs Two of the Spice Girls reunited at an Oasis recently almost three decades on from rumoured tension between them. Mel C and Geri Horner were among the fans at Wembley Stadium for one of the rock band's shows last week. The Oasis Live '25 tour arrived at the stadium in London last month for five concerts ahead of additional shows at the venue later in the year. Mel, 51, and Geri, 53, were among those in the crowd at one of the gigs held last week. Geri had previously shared that she had met three of the Lionesses whilst in the audience. Now, in a post celebrating her birthday today, it has been revealed that 'Ginger Spice' reunited with her former bandmate Mel in the stands too. Mel, nicknamed Sporty Spice, paid tribute to Geri in a post on Instagram this morning for the occasion. She wrote: "Happy Birthday darling @gerihalliwellhorner, our Ginger Spice. Have an amazing day, love you to pieces." The post included a series of photos showing them over the years. It included a photo of Mel and Geri stood together in the stands at Wembley Stadium recently, with the former sporting a lanyard that featured Oasis' band logo. Mel is seen wearing a blue top and trousers, whilst Geri attended the gig in a white jumpsuit. It appears to be the same outfit Geri was wearing in a photo with England footballers Alex Greenwood, 31, Hannah Hampton, 24, and Alessia Russo, 26, at an Oasis gig last Wednesday. It comes following speculation of a 'feud' between the Spice Girls and Oasis, which includes Liam Gallagher, 52, and Noel Gallagher, 58, in its line-up, years ago. Mel's previously said that there is "no beef" between them though. The rumour dates back to the BRIT Awards in 1997, when both bands were up for awards. Hinting an issue with the Spice Girls, Liam reportedly said that he wouldn't attend as he would "smack them" if he bumped into them. During the Spice Girls' acceptance speech for British Single of the Year, which was given to their debut single Wannabe, rather than Oasis' song Don't Look Back in Anger, Mel had a message for Liam. She said on stage: "I just wanna say, Liam, come and have a go if you think you're hard enough!" Years later though, she dismissed any suggestion of a feud by posing for a photo with Liam and some of her bandmates at the Olympics in 2012, following the Spice Girls' performance. The group were said to have partied together. More recently, as reported by On The Radio, Mel spoke about Liam when she guest hosted BBC Radio 2 's Sounds of the 90s in 2020. She was joined by pal Geri, who teased that she put "those boys" in their place at the BRITs in 1997. Mel is quoted as having said: "Yeah so Liam Gallagher had been bad mouthing us and I told him to come and have a go if he thinks he's hard enough. I'd actually never met him and I got to meet him a few months later and he was like 'c'mon then, scouse' kind of offering me out ... he's gone on to make some great records as well, so yeah, no beef."
