‘They're putting 4G on the Moon but I can't even get signal in Putney'

Independent07-03-2025

News this week that 4G connectivity is being brought to the Moon may be considered a giant technological leap for mankind, but for residents of one estate in west London, it represents yet another frustration in a long-running battle to get network coverage.
'There is an irony that you can get signal on the Moon but none in some parts of London,' says Fleur Anderson, the MP for Putney who has been campaigning for more phone masts to be erected in the area.
She added that the lack of signal had impacted constituents during the pandemic and even affected people's abilities to apply for jobs.
One of her constituents, David Henderson, knows the area's network coverage issues only too well. He's lived on the Ashburton Estate for 20 years and says the area has always been a 'dead zone' for phone reception, but as mobile phones have taken over from landlines as the primary mode of communication, it's become a much bigger problem.
'All my friends try to call me by mobile phone and they just can't get through at all,' the 61-year-old tells The Independent. 'I do tell them to phone the home number, people still forget and it just goes straight through the voicemail.'
It's not just contacting friends and family that's an issue, Mr Henderson adds. Basic services, such as accessing a bank account from a phone, often require signal too.
'Two-factor verification is very well used these days, which needs a text message to be sent from the bank,' he says. 'Text messages just don't come through. It could take 10 minutes, it could take 20 minutes, it could be the next day.
'Delivery companies want a mobile number to contact you and they can't get through if there's an issue with deliveries.
'Getting an emergency number can be difficult as well because there's no signal.'
Putney isn't the only area in London – let alone the rest of the UK – suffering from signal issues. An investigation from the London Centric found it was far more difficult to build new phone masts in the city than anywhere else in the country.
A 2023 report from Ofcom meanwhile found that seven per cent of the country does not have any 4G coverage, while a separate study conducted by the research firm Opensignal found that UK mobile users had the worst average 5G download speeds of all G7 countries.
The journey to full signal coverage across the country has been long and slow, with numerous pledges made over the years.
Boris Johnson pledged in 2019 to make poor mobile phone signals a 'thing of the past' with a fast-tracked £1bn investment to eradicate not-spots in rural areas.
The 'Shared Rural network' plan involved erecting new masts and existing infrastructure shared between the four mobile phone providers: O2, Three, Vodafone and EE. However, last month it emerged that the government was scaling back the number of new mobile phone masts to be built as part of the plan from 260 to just 60.
For Mr Henderson, however, there is some positive news on the horizon. His revealed that Vodafone had 'stepped up' to put phone masts on rooftops in the area following consultations with a number of telecom companies.
'It's good to find out they're planning on putting a mast up now,' he said. 'It's just a matter of when.'

Mobile network offering DOUBLE data SIM-only deal – get 200GB for £12p/m

For anyone looking to switch networks, it's a great time to upgrade. Smarty has some seriously good data boosting SIM-only plans right now, with up to 200GB of data for just £12. 1 Smarty SIM-only deal, 100GB 200GB data for £12/month BUY FROM SMARTY I've covered SIM-only deals for a while now, and over time, you learn to spot the real gems from the overhyped fluff. This latest offer from Smarty is easily one of the better ones to pop up in recent months. Right now, Smarty is running two impressive promotions that boost data without hiking up the price. If you're someone who chews through mobile data, these are well worth a look. The first is its 16GB plan, which has just been bumped up to 50GB per month, all while staying at just £8. The real eye-catcher, though, is Smarty's 100GB plan, which has now been doubled to 200GB for just £12 a month. That's a huge amount of data for a great price, especially since there's usually a big leap between low GB plans and Unlimited. Deals like this make Unlimited plans feel less necessary, and are ideal if you're not a heavy user but still want peace of mind. It's also a great time to join Smarty, as the provider runs on Three's network, which is in line for some major improvements following Three's merger with Vodafone. That means better coverage and faster speeds are likely on the horizon as the networks start sharing infrastructure. Best SIM-only deals from Smarty If you want to spend less and use less data, or if Unlimited is what you need, Smarty has plenty of other budget-friendly deals going right now. Smarty plans are all rolling 1-month contracts, meaning you're never locked in and can switch or cancel easily. It's another reason the network is a favourite for budget-savvy shoppers. And if you're in the market for a new handset too, this week has delivered some tempting extras in the Android world. One major provider is offering a free tech bundle worth £410 when you pick up the latest Honor phone, with plans starting from just £20 per month. If these deals aren't quite the right fit, check out our roundup of the best SIM-only deals across the big networks.

Cheapest UK broadband providers revealed and you could save £108 a year

THE cheapest UK broadband providers have been revealed - and switching could save you £108 a year. New customer research from GoCompare found Sky is top when it comes to affordability. The price comparison site said of the firms offering broadband deals with speeds between the 100 to 249 megabits per second (Mbps) range, Sky came out cheapest, according to households it surveyed. Among Sky customers receiving speeds in this range, a quarter reported paying less than £21 per month - the highest proportion of the providers included in the survey. Meanwhile, 2% said they were being charged between £11 and £15. Virgin Media and Vodafone were tied in second place for cheapest broadband deals, according to customers surveyed. GoCompare said just 13% of both providers' users paid £20 or less for deals in the same speed range. The vast majority were paying between £16 and £20 although 4% of Vodafone's users were charged less and 1% of Virgin Media's paying £10 or under. Around one in 10 (12%) BT customers said they were paying below the £21 mark. However, 4% said they pay just £10 per month or less. Meanwhile, only 11% of EE 's users were found to be paying under £21 and 6% were in the lowest price bracket of £11 or less - the most of the providers listed. GoCompare said that the customer survey revealed providers generally charge between £21 and £30 per month for broadband speeds in the 100 to 249Mbps range. That means a customer opting for a £21 a month deal over a £30 a month deal would save £108 per year. How firms compared on internet service and customer service GoCompare's survey also looked at how broadband firms fared in terms of service reliability. The price comparison website found Plusnet was the most reliable by customers it surveyed. It said 92% of Plusnet customers reported that their service had been reliable over the last 12 months. Meanwhile, 65% described it as "very reliable". Sky, BT and EE customers surveyed reported similar levels of service reliability. Of the BT customers surveyed, 94% reported having a reliable service but just 58% branded it "very reliable". EE and Sky received the same customer scores, with 92% of their users describing their broadband service as "reliable". But, only just over half of both firms' customers stated it was "very reliable". Three received some of the best scores for customer service. Just under half (49%) of its users stated that the provider offered 'good' customer service, with a total of 62% giving a positive response. EE was close behind, with over half (57%) of its users giving the provider's service a positive response overall, with roughly a quarter (26%) stating it was 'very good'. Plusnet came in a very close third in this category, with 54% giving a positive answer, and a quarter (25%) saying the service was 'very good'. Vodafone received marginally more positive responses than Plusnet, 55%, but only a fifth described it as 'very good'. Matt Sanders, broadband expert at said: 'Broadband users will always want a deal with the fastest speeds for the lowest price possible. "Our statistics suggest that Sky are providing a high proportion of users with below-average prices for decent speeds, highlighting them as a strong choice for cost-conscious customers. 'But price isn't the only factor to consider when deciding on the right broadband deal for you. "Reliability and good quality customer service are also important. "Plus, many broadband deals include extras like TV packages, so while one might be low-cost, another might be better value for money when all the additions are taken into account. 'For this reason, before committing to a package, it's always a good idea to compare providers to find out which offers the best deal for your needs. "Doing so regularly will make sure you're still getting the best offer possible." The Sun asked EE to comment. How to save on broadband and TV bills HERE'S how to save money on your broadband and TV bills: Audit your subscriptions If you've got multiple subscriptions to various on-demand services, such as Amazon Prime, Netflix, and Sky consider whether you need them all. Could you even just get by with Freeview, which couldn't cost you anything extra each month for TV. Also make sure you're not paying for Netflix twice via Sky and directly. Haggle for a discount If you want to stay with your provider, check prices elsewhere to set a benchmark and then call its customer services and threaten to leave unless it price matches or lowers your bill. Switch and save If you don't want to stay with your current provider check if you can cancel your contract penalty free and switch to a cheaper provider. A comparison site, such as BroadbandChoices or Uswitch, will help you find the best deal for free.

Millions of Brits get free mobile upgrade as two major firms confirm change

Two popular networks are joining forces which could spell good news for millions of customers across the UK Changes to your mobile phone can seem like a daunting prospect. Brits might find it all too easy to get lost in the tech jargon, as word comes from your smartphone company that they are modifying an aspect of your device. However, millions of Vodafone and Three customers are set for one kind of boost that should be very welcome - an improvement in their mobile signal, as the networks, which have recently merged, unveils its £11billion grand plans. The firms are joining forces to create a platform called VodafoneThree, meaning it will now be the UK's biggest. In just two weeks' time, seven million Three users and its budget sub-brand SMARTY will see their services get better. This includes a 20 per cent average speed uplift on 4G for everything from surfing the web to texting pals. And that's not all. Wait just a few more months, and 27 mobile subscribers across both Vodafone and Three will start to benefit from full access to roam on each other's networks. This will be made available at no extra cost. This will get rid of dreaded "not spots" from parts of the country amounting to ten times the size of London. VodafoneThree has confirmed that its various brands will remain separate. This not only includes Vodafone and Three, but also VOXI, SMARTY and Talkmobile. However, Vodafone will be the only brand for business customers. "A new era of connectivity has begun," Max Taylor, CEO, VodafoneThree, said. "We will connect every nation, every community, in every corner of the UK. "We will build the UK's best 5G network with an unprecedented £11bn privately funded infrastructure project, laying the digital foundation for our country's growth ambitions. "Benefits for our 27 million mobile customers will start within months, with access to roam across both networks at no extra cost. "From big cities to small towns, and everywhere in between, our mission is to build the UK's best network." Along with the coverage boost, VodafoneThree reckons it will make its cutsomer service better. Within two years the company will open two new customer care centres in Belfast and Sheffield, bringing 400 sales and customer service roles back to the UK, alongside the existing call centres in Glasgow and Stoke. Other exciting developments we can anticipate are the beta trials on a "first-of-its-kind," space-based satellite mobile network that VodaFoneThree says it will launch next year. This will support the existing network build, eliminating coverage gaps in places that otherwise couldn't be reached. Lastly, even customers of other providers - such as EE and O2 - will be able to try VodafoneThree's network with a seven-day, free, eSIM trial. By simply scanning a QR code, customers will be able to try the network with the same phone and same contact details. Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community!
