'My family think I gave kids 'disgusting' names – but they're important to me'

Daily Mirrora day ago

A mum claimed she's been accused of being 'selfish' by giving her children names that are important to her – and her mother-in-law has even called the monikers 'disgusting'
Picking out your child's name can sometimes be a very personal task. It's not uncommon for parents to choose names that have sentimental meaning, such as being the moniker of late family members, or using names from pieces of media that made a lasting impact on them.
Whatever baby name you choose is your decision. But everyone has differing tastes, so it's not likely that you'll be able to please everyone with your chosen name. That's the tough reality one mum has discovered over the past couple of years, as she has family members who can't stand the names she's given her daughters.

In a post on Reddit, the mum said she already has two daughters and is currently expecting a third. She also said that although she lives in the US, her side of the family is Russian, so she and her husband have given each of their daughters a name that is popular in Russia in order to keep them connected to their heritage.

The mum insisted the three names - Natasha, Julia, and soon-to-be-born Anastasia - are "normal names" to give children, but her husband's family believe they are "unusual" for the US.
Her mother-in-law has even gone so far as to call the names "disgusting", and told the mum she was "selfish" for only thinking of her own nationality when naming her daughters.
She wrote: "I have two daughters, and my third (which is also a baby girl) is due in a week or so. My in-laws are so disapproving of their names. I think my daughters have normal names. My mother-in-law said they are disgusting names. My kids are called Natasha and Julia - normal names right? Not to my family.
"My husband and I have agreed on Anastasia for our baby girl. And my in-laws hate it. My side of the family is Russian, I grew up in Russia, my name is Melaniya, but I go by Melissa since I live in the US. My husband and I love Russian names for our children, hence why they all have Russian names.
"My husband's side of the family says that it is a selfish decision to just be thinking of my own nationality. What are your thoughts? I genuinely love my children's names, but my husband said it is unusual for children in the USA to have these names."

Although the names are all popular in Russia, they are not obscure names in the US. According to The Bump, both Julia and Anastasia are relatively popular names in the US, ranking at 293rd and 395th, respectively. Natasha is the least used name in the US out of the ones they selected, ranking at 1,854th.
Commenters on the mum's post were quick to tell her that the names she picked out are not unusual at all. Many also slammed her mother-in-law's behaviour and said her husband should be doing more to get his mother to back off.

One person said: "These names are not unusual in the US at all. I think the behaviour of your in-laws is what's disgusting here. I wish you didn't have to deal with such awful people."
Another added: "That's so rude, no matter what the name is. But honestly, I don't understand the fuss at all; these are extremely 'normal' and common names in the US. I think those three names together are beautiful."
While a third wrote: "Your in-laws are being rude. All three of those names are lovely, normal names and even better that they honour their heritage. My husband and I even considered Anastasia for our daughter, and we don't have any Russian in us or in our family."
The mum also noted in the comments that she specifically chose to use the English spellings for her daughters' names to appease her in-laws.
She said: "I thought they were common names too, I used the English spelling to make them happy. My parents love my kids' names, and so do my husband and I."

Jaffa Cake fans fume after spotting difference in taste claiming 'they're not the same'

A Jaffa Cake fan has taken to social media to share their disappointment over one change - and it seems many other people agree with them. Fans of Jaffa Cakes have taken to sharing a common grievance after noticing a discrepancy in the sweet treat's taste. The popular McVities delight is a quintessential British classic, consisting of a sponge base, a layer of orange-flavoured jam, and a dark chocolate topping. First created nearly a century ago, numerous supermarkets and stores across the nation have developed their own versions of Jaffa Cakes. However, many enthusiasts swear by the original McVities Jaffa Cake. ‌ This trusty treat can often be found in the biscuit aisle, despite being legally classified as a cake following a 1991 VAT ruling, reports the Mirror. ‌ Recently, a Jaffa Cakes enthusiast purchased a pack at the supermarket after a few years of abstinence. On Reddit, they revealed that they couldn't wait to get home before opening the box and indulging. They soon regretted their decision, describing the cakes as "dry". They elaborated: "That 'spongey' bit? It's not the same spongey bit I remember growing up. It's like drywall." "Well, drywall is a bit far, but it ain't no sponge. I had three, just to make sure I wasn't going crazy, and they were all the same." Upon returning home, they offered the cakes to friends, who concurred with their assessment, with all of them convinced that they're "just not the same". The debate stirred on Reddit as one user posed the question: "Has something changed? Have false memories allowed me to remember an absolutely supreme experience whilst munching on these delights? ‌ "Or have they just decided to change the whole recipe to save a few quid?" They further expressed their dismay: "P.S. The absolute kings of the knock-off Jaffas used to be MandS. "I don't dare try them now in case they've followed suit and sucked all the moisture out of theirs as well." ‌ In the comments section, fellow Redditors were quick to chime in, seemingly echoing the sentiment. One noted: "I used to think as you get old your taste buds change or you grew bigger but no, they f***ed with the sizes and recipes." Another suggested: "Off-brand Jaffa cakes have been superior for a few years now. Aldi ones are pretty good, MandS too". ‌ Complaints also arose about the shrunken size of Jaffa Cakes: "They used to be 12 but now 10 in a packet. "They have shrunk as I can easily get one in my gob as 20 odd years ago I would struggle. So that's 10 mouthfuls for me." Another user voiced frustration: "I'm actually starting to get p***ed off with how literally everything in the shops is crap. ‌ "McVities Jaffa Cakes are a premium brand, if I am buying them I want the premium quality that ought to come with the premium branding." Continuing the grumble they added: "But no, I'm paying a premium price for a fancy box containing a worse tasting and smaller product than Aldi own brand. Might try them again in a decade." A request for comment has been sent to McVitie's.

Watch giant flaming ghost ship continue to burn over a WEEK after blaze erupted on cargo vessel laden with electric cars

THIS is the moment a cargo ship carrying more than 3000 EVs was captured burning over a week after a fire broke out on board. Footage shows the giant vessel engulfed in smoke and blackened from the blaze which is thought to have started near the stern. Overflight photos from the US Coast Guard also show the extent of the damage which extends the whole length of the hull. Whilst the ship continues to burn reports suggest it is still watertight. Two additional tugs will also be sent to help with the rescue operation, with the first arriving in six days and the second in 12 days. Resolve Marine and the United State Coast Guard have also been consulted to help with a spill contingency plan. The firm told World Cargo News: "The safety of everyone involved and the protection of the environment remain our top priorities.' Morning Midas was about 220 miles south of Adak, Alaska when it caught fire and was carrying more than 3,000 vehicles, including around 750 EVs. Oil tanker & cargo ship engulfed in flames after crash just 10 miles off UK coast sparking mammoth rescue mission A Coast Guard spokesperson said: 'The safety of the public, responders, and vessel crews operating in the area remains our top priority. 'We are working closely with Zodiac Maritime to ensure a safe and effective plan to address the fire and mitigate any potential impacts to the environment'. The Morning Midas is estimated to have about 350 metric tons of gas fuel and over 1,500 metric tons of very low sulfur fuel oil onboard. This ship's devastating blaze comes just a couple months after a fire reportedly ripped through a 500ft container ship in the North Sea. The Dutch vessel Victoria L was seen up in flames following the blast. At least 19 crew members were on board the ship when officials were first alerted to the fire at around 1pm, HLN media reports. The ship was travelling through the Hoek van Holland, near to Rotterdam at the time. It was travelling from Hamburg in Germany to the port of Rotterdam. Several ships rushed to the scene to help with the rescue mission along with two helicopters with emergency services on site. The crew is said to have tried to extinguish the fire themselves at first before a second blast caused the Dutch coastguard to send over support vessels. The Victoria L, built in 2009, sails under the flag of Liberia. It is a huge 528ft long and 91ft wide. 5 The blaze is thought to have started near the stern Credit: Alf Van Beem/ Wikimedia Commons

Edinburgh woman pleads to be reunited with Ukrainian husband 'too old to fight'

More info An Edinburgh woman hopes to be reunited with her husband who was stuck in their war-torn homeland due to his age. Originally from Kherson in Ukraine, Liudmyla Sinelnyk, found refuge in Edinburgh in 2022. But despite her relief, she was forced to leave her husband, Oleksandr, after living together for 37 years. The 57-year-old is hoping she can be reunited with her husband after the pair 'cried in each others arms' when they were separated due ongoing conflict. Liudmyla moved to the first country to provide her a safe home but Oleksandr was forbidden at that time to join her due to rules meaning men under 60 are not able to leave the country. Speaking to Edinburgh Live, she said: "Since the Russian invasion in 2022, I have been living and working in Edinburgh. "I really need help in reuniting with my husband, Oleksandr, who is now 60 years old and currently living in Dnipro —a city that is under constant shelling and great danger. "In order to bring him to safety in Scotland, we need a UK-based sponsor. According to the requirements, the sponsor must have at least one spare room available for inspection by the Home Office. "This room will only be used to meet the application requirements—Oleksandr will live with me, as I have accommodation and a stable job. "Any support will help save my husband's life." Liudmyla arrived in the capital through the Homes for Ukraine programme and is hoping the same can happen for her husband. She added: "When I left my husband, it was very difficult, we cried for a long time in each other's arms, we lived as a couple for 37 years. "At the beginning of the full-scale war in 2022, I arrived in the first country that provided me with protection. "My husband and I were not able to leave together because men under 60 were not allowed to leave the country due to military service." According to the UK Government website, the Homes for Ukraine programme allows UK citizens to offer a home for those who are fleeing Ukraine. Contributors to the programme can be matched with a person or family who have already lived in the UK but needs a new home. Anyone in the UK can register their interest if they have not already been matched with a Ukrainian person or family. Participants are expected to offer a room for at least six months, they should not have a criminal record and if they are not a British citizen, they must have leave to remain in the UK for at least six months. Information about the Homes for Ukraine Programme can be found here.
